Shouldn't it be blue?

Blue would be cool, but red, or even black, would be cooler. :)

Blue would be cool, but red, or even black, would be cooler. :)I dunno. Blue with white stripes - or white with blue stripes - are classic colour combos for Mustangs.

On an unrelated note, the Magic Bus piece continues:

Okay, now it's really finished - adjusted the colour and did the colour transitions around the stripes in the background:

Another great piece, Bret. What would be cool is a "coming" one showing the front of the bus and then a "going" one with the back of the bus.

Maybe I'll draw a Mustang and you can color it for me since I'm terrible at coloring.

I should also add that the whole time I was growing up, I wished he still had that old bus.

I totally cracked up over the magic bus, especially when I saw the bottles on the hood. :D Love it, especially the finished concept... reminds me of some posters I had when I was a 70's kid. Your Dad's gonna LOVE it. (And yep, you started the song in my head the minute I saw it!)

I'm gonna be interested to see where you go with the dolphins... I love dolphins. Did a fantasy version of a dolphin myself a long while back. I'm curious to see where this one goes from here.

BTW, I know exactly where I'm gonna hang the Algorhythms poster, once we get the walls finished: Our basement has a large room with a fireplace (never been used---yet!); we're buying a pool table from a friend (next bonus, I hope!) will put it in that room---and we're gonna hang some cool stuff on the walls there, especially that poster. :D

Your Dad's gonna LOVE it. (And yep, you started the song in my head the minute I saw it!)Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that one, too. I should be getting it back from the printer any day now - they're doing it on metallic paper, so it'll look kinda like the old rock posters on Mylar you could buy back when we were impressionable teenagers.
I'm gonna be interested to see where you go with the dolphins... I love dolphins. Did a fantasy version of a dolphin myself a long while back. I'm curious to see where this one goes from here.I think the dolphins are pretty much finished, actually. There may be some fine tuning, but that's about it. I'm pretty happy with how the ink resist technique worked fairly well.

(Cool tutorial on the technique here (http://www.wetcanvas.com/Articles2/17097/662/), by the way.)

The beginnings of my next piece:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/howyadoin/In%20Progress/Seahorse_01.jpg

(Yes, I usually work on a few at a time.)

This is both a rough colour study and the first stage of the ink resist (http://www.wetcanvas.com/Articles2/17097/662) technique.

howyadoin
01-19-2007, 01:29 AM
Next steps in the ink resist technique:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v225/howyadoin/In%20Progress/Seahorse_02.jpg

Basically, all the white areas have been covered in a couple layers of gouache. I'll be laying down a coat of India ink over the whole thing, and then when it's dry, I'll take a toothbrush and hot water to the picture. The gouache, being water-soluble, will wash off, taking the ink with it. But in the areas without the gouache, the ink will still adhere to the board, and at least some of the existing watercolour underneath it all should be preserved, as well.

That's an interesting technique but it takes guts to use it... I can easily see how I would mess it up!

Your seahorse design looks good. I'd see it on the cover of a biology book! Thanks. I didn't do a huge amount of research, but that was mainly because I found a few decent reference photos right off the bat.

Anyhow, the majority of it's done now. Just a matter of fine-tuning from here:

I really like the results, too.

I had read about that technique, but it seems way too messy and risky for me. I'm glad to see how well it worked on the water, the crackliness gives it more depth, but also a fossilized look. Well done!

Well done!Thank you very much. I should point out, though, that the water was done separately and didn't use the ink resist. I just crumpled up some paper, glued it to some art board, and painted it with watercolour.

No, the other one. The orange one on the left with a mane.Ah. That's supposed to be an Indian chief. In the hand to our left he's carrying a baby (I vaguely remember that I'd just learned the word "papoose"), and in the other some kind of a weapon.

And I've got some crazy shit in mind for this one - for the body of the guitar I'm gonna glue down some Japanese paper and then layer on a bunch of clear gel on top, and then start playing with coloured glazes over all that. Thinking about using bits of aluminum foil on the pickups, and possibly wire for the strings, too.

Yeah, I'm onto it. Something I never really did. Too much of a rush.

Not so far, but I would like to. I think my goal for this year will be to get some of my work on display in local restaurants, for starters.

You should definitely try and get an exhibition up. Do the restaurants and local theatres, coffee bars but book a place in a gallery. If they are anything like the ones over here, you'll probably have like a 1 - 2 year waiting list. That gives you the time and inspiration to work toward filling it out with your best stuff. I think you would do well and sell a few paintings. Then you work toward the next one.

How are you finding your subjects? Is it stuff around the house? Like the guitar or do you go out looking for stuff? Lots is obviously from your imagination.

howyadoin
03-05-2007, 09:27 AM
How are you finding your subjects? Is it stuff around the house? Like the guitar or do you go out looking for stuff? Lots is obviously from your imagination.A few years back I took all my random thumbnails, post-it notes and scraps of ideas, and stuck them into a blank hardcover book. Then every time I'd pick that book up, I'd think of modifications to some of the ideas, or they'd spin off new concepts altogether. Now that book's so crammed with stuff, I started a second one. Plus, when I'm doing research for pictures, I'll often see something that triggers something else entirely.

So basically, there's no dearth of ideas. I've got roughly 80 folders in my Projects folder on the computer - most of them, obviously, just in the research phase. Some of them just aren't ready to hatch yet, and a lot of them probably never will.

But with this latest series, I find I'm bypassing a ot of the old concepts I have kicking around. It's usually while I'm painting that I get inspiration for the next piece(s).

The Fembot is going to be amazing I can tell already. I've loved Fembots since seeing Metropolis as a kid.

If you show the nipples it won't be pornographic. Unless people have a very weird idea of what porn is. It'll be art.
I sent an email to one of the moderators on this forum ages ago, asking if it would be ok to post a picture showing nipples, in my thread but I never got a reply. They're pretty ugly witches nipples, and I can't imagine anyone thinking they're pornographic but who knows maybe it will get deleted later, as I've bit the bullet and posted it.

You could try an email to the mods, maybe the man with the highest posts on CBR will get a reply.

I hope you post it with nipples, because I want to see it as it should be and because it's art not porn.

Thanks, Ben. Just outta curiosity, what surprised you about the acrylics?

Probably just intellectual laziness on my part... Seeing how your pencil work on the robot lady was already pretty sharp, and how robots and high-tech go hand in hand, I just assumed you would render the piece with photoshop coloring.

Seeing how beautiful she looks right now in acrylic, I'm really happy to have guessed wrong. The elegance of the linework remains, but the lady now has an earthiness, a concrete presence, that computer coloring usually can't confer as well as classical methods. (Yes, my bias for tradtional media shows... sorry).

It's a good thing that you're equally adept at so many techniques!

It's practically art porn - textures and techniques that are just pure eye candy. Lots of close-ups like the ones I've been showing of my recent paintings, and with mind-blowing colour. My mind is just whirling with the possibilities.

Already found a new way to treat the background in the Serenity piece.

You ever do anything with masonry (brick and cement)? Kind of heavy, but in the South here, there's a great deal of that going on with home construction, for example.

There's a myriad of colours you can chose to use for your cement as well...including an admixture for reducing water damage and salts/minerals (which leave those white streaks down buildings).

I suspect that somewhere in the next couple years I'll gravitate towards much bigger pieces. Maybe concrete will be part of that.

There's not much texture to see in the yellow/orange areas of the robot; I'm slowing building up layers of clear gloss over those areas, so by the time I'm finished, they'll be pretty flat.

They'll have a shitload of depth to them, though.

Very, very nice!

The choice of colors is great: I think most people would have gone with a straight overall golden look, but this is much better.

Heh! We asked the same question in Karate class. Our belts are shipped from Japan, with our own name written on it in kanji characters. But how to tell if that's really what they say? I dread to think it might be "Some idiotic gaijin shelled good money for this! Nyah-nyah!!!"

As I mentioned in RITAs, I like the large frame (big shoulders, arms and hips which balance her other large portions of anatomy). :D

It's amazing what a difference just one line will do. You know how there was talk on Rita's about how how her expression changed from the pencil to the ink? I figured out what it is for me - it's her left eye. In the pencil it was clear and round, and the eyebrow arched cleanly over the eye giving her a saucily challenging I "I dare you to come hither" expression. In the ink when you tweaked her hair a bit, you gave the eyelid a downward flourish at the outside corner of her eye and then her expression took on a more narrow-eyed "bitch, please!" expression.

What did you use for inking and coloring on this one? Thanks. The arms look pretty puny when I sketched them relatively normally-sized, so the anatomy kinda grew from there.

To give you and idea of just how well-developed Power Girl is, though, I based the drawing primarily on a photo of a ridiculously-endowed porn star, and then made the boobs even bigger.

Oh, and all the work was done in marker on this one.

Yeah, I just scaled her boobs with her head, and they're almost the same size. Not too many women built like that.

What's funny, is that because it's in a comic style, it doesn't look bizarre. I'm not sure what to think of that.

I mentioned this in RITAs, but whenever I sketch a woman, I end up down sizing the breasts because I draw them so ridiculously too big in the first draft.

I wonder what people will think 30 or 40 years from now when they look back at comic art.

So I can sympathize with Eisner and the whole controversy regarding his depiction of Ebony White. It probably looked normal to him.
