Hellboy Gets an All-New Look in Hellboy Animated Products!
Fri, 29 Sep 2006 16:07:08 -0700
Beginning in late 2006, Hellboy fans will see their beloved hero like they've never seen him before. The Hellboy Animated line debuts with The Sword of Storms, a new animated version of Mike Mignola's Hellboy, being produced by Starz Media and released on DVD by Starz Home Entertainment. Dark Horse Deluxe is joining the celebration with a variety of comics and toys, all scheduled to tie in with the DVD release of The Sword of Storms on February 6, 2007.
Hellboy creator, Mike Mignola, chose character concept artist, Sean "Cheeks" Galloway to create a contemporary, stylized look for the Hellboy Animated movies.
Taking a cue from that style, Dark Horse Deluxe will release two full-size limited-edition statues, both sculpted by Tony Cipriano that will appear on store shelves just before the holidays. The first of these statues, Hellboy, features the muscular red demon in his billowing trench coat, posed with his gun ready to fire. Hellboy's amphibious confidant, Abe Sapien, is posed and ready for action as the second statue.
The Hellboy Animated line continues in full-force in early 2007, with the release of an original digest-size comic drawn in the animated style, a boxed set of three four-inch PVC figures, the first in a series of mini-busts, and sculptural refrigerator magnets.
The busts are sculpted by top talent Tim Bruckner, and represent his first work for Dark Horse.
"We are delighted to have Tim on board as we've been fans of his work for years," David Scroggy, Dark Horse's Vice President of Product Development, noted. "He really captured the new look of these characters, and was very successful in breathing life into them."
Dark Horse looked to Gentle Giant Studios for the creation of the PVC figures and the magnets.
"Gentle Giant will be creating their own line of action figures and 'bust-up' toys," Scroggy continued," so it made sense to collaborate with them on these items."
Dark Horse plans to update the line with new releases throughout 2007.

Collectables are a funny thing. The collector would like to know
that the items (mini-busts) they are collecting will go beyond the
first 2 in a series. The company making the collectable items is
wary to commit beyond the initial (2) offering. Catch-22.
Well, fingers crossed (XX) that Hellboy and Abe sell well enough to
add the Liz.
ABE SAPIEN-- by Mike Mignola and Jason Alexander-- will ship a few months later in 2007. (Script and covers by Mignola.)
First time i heard about that one, I love Alexander's work, really looking forward to what he does on the book.

For anyone who isn't currently seeing Jason's work in the absolutely wonderful series The Escapist, you are truly missing out. Jason's work is the best of what Jae Lee is doing, with a bit of George Pratt, Kent Williams, and others of similar ilk thrown in for good measure. In other words, he's a complete and utter genius and I'm loving his work! Check it out folks if you haven't already.

I normally just buy TPB's, but I saw all 5 of them going at a good price on ebay the other day, snapped them up...

TPBs are nice in that ya get the whole story plus some extra (although why
DarkHorse doesn't reproduce the issue covers is odd), but, the comic has the
letters page and in this day of forums and chats and message boards, letter
pages are passe. Plus, doubt if I could sit on my hands for 4 extra months
while Mignola and Arcudi and Davis are spinn'n yarns.;)
Thanks for the update, Lady J.

I was poking about at Sideshow's website and they are having some kind of Halloween event biginning next weekend. One thing they are doing currently is having a spot on their website where you get your fortune told (nothing too elaborate, mostly having to do with their site and the event). I tried it out and it gives you the opportunity to refresh the message (or "fortune," if you will) so you can see different messages. Well, the purpose of this longish intro is to mention that one of the messages said that information on new Hellboy items would be coming my way soon. My guess is that Sideshow is going to be announcing some new Hellboy stuff next weekend during the event. I haven't heard about anything new they were making so perhaps this will be some news once the mystery (and my "fortune") are revealed.
Thanks Kirk!!!Maybe a life-size Hellboy?!!! I wouldn't put it pass sideshow,They could pull it off.Their life-size bust line is successful. But the price tag on a life-size anything would probably go into the thousands of $$$.Come on winning lotto numbers!!!

While it is a nice illustration, I just don't care for the cover of The Black Wedding. I think it has to do with the fact that every time I look at that drawing of Abe I see Bob Hope from the old 1960's DC comicbooks. I am seriously hoping that passes once I see the actual book.
