I've been trying to compare and contrast the mythologies of the marvel and dc universe. One question I have regarding the dc universe is, do vampires exist in this universe, similar to marvel or buffy the vampire slayer series? and does vertigo (constantine, etc) exist in the main dc universe or is it separate? thanks.

As fire as I know, DC has no vampires. Many Vertigo titles are either out of continuity or have a grey area.Constantine is supposed to fit in, somewhere, with DC continuity. Other titles like Swamp Thing and Tim Hunter also sort of fit in.
Sorry, Kummi, I can't help you.

...if Batman -Red Blood (or Red Mist?) wasnt Elseworlds - there would be vampire stories in the DCU.

There was a John Byrne/Chris Claremont JLA arc from a few years back that had vampires as the protagonists. Sadly it was the arc that rebooted the Doom Patrol so who knows post iCrisis if its in or out of continuity.

There was a passing mention of vampires in Day Of Vengeance; a classic-looking vampire (his name escapes me at the moment) hanging around in the Oblivion Bar commented that the Spectre had destroyed a vampire coven that was known for practicing non-violence against humans.
EDIT: Checked my Day Of Vengeance trade after getting home. The vampire clan referred to was the Darkholm family; interestingly enough, the vampire who spoke of them was Andrew Bennett, the main character of I... Vampire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%E2%80%A6Vampire). That woupld imply that I... Vampire (published in House of Mystery between 1981 and 1983) is in continuity; it doesn't seem like the sort of thing to be retconned by Crisis On Infinite Earths.

Personally, I think that the DC characters being published under the Vertigo imprint are still DCU but it would be pointless to bring in a bunch of DC super-heroes in as guest-stars. Seems that once you stop seeing guest appearances in a company-owned titled people start thinking that series has shifted into an alternate reality/Elseworld/What If world/Earth #this or Earth #that.
As for vampires in the DCU - what about I, Vampire(and now I, Spyder)?
And Preacher was a creator-owned series - exists in its own "universe".

See the edit to my previous post; I believe I... Vampire is in.

DC has vampires. A girl who was a member of Scare Tactics was a vampire, and we also got to meet other vampires like her. As already mentioned, the JLA fought a vampire in the horrendous and mercifully possibly out of continuity JLA story Claremont and Byrne worked together. A vampire once showed up in the Hal Jordan Spectre series. Superman once fought Dracula. There are a lot of vampire appearances in the DCU.

Yes, some of them do. Hellblazer, Books of Magic, Sandman, Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol, Shade the Changing Man and plenty other Vertigo series have ties to the DCU; they just don't interact much with the DCU though, but the odd cameo has been known to happen.
Preacher, Fables, 100 bullets and other Vertigo series are completely stand alone and exist in their own continuity separate from everything else.

There was also a focus on Markovian vampires in the 90s version of Outsiders. One of them turned Looker into a vamp, though that may have been retconned out by the time she got blowed up at the end of Infinite Crisis.

The Vertigo characters that originated in the DCU (Constantine, Swamp Thing, Tim Hunter, etc.) are still kinda sorta in the DCU.
Of course, most of these characters have adventures in Vertigo-land that a) almost ever reference the fact that they live in the greater DCU, and b) tend to have such world-shattering events that it strains the suspension of disbelief that they're even remotely in a shared universe.
So I look at it this way: The adventures of the DCU-born Vertigo characters take place in hypertimelines that intertwine with the "main branch" of the DCU. While the "main branch" versions of these characters have adventures that resemble (to varying degrees) those of their Vertigo counterparts, the Vertigo versions are, by and large, much more interesting to read :)

Other than the aforementioned I Vampire and Markovian vampire stories, there was also an Action Comics Annual by John Byrne and Art Adams that had Supes and Batman battling vampires.

I distinctly remember looking at scans, on this board, of WonderWoman fighting Superman while he was under the control of a vampire.
So, yeah, I'd have to say that vampire's exist in the DCU.
In fact, I also remember hearing how Superman fought Dracula once.

Batman fights Vampires in Batman #349 and #350, though this is Pre-Crisis continuity.

What about the Norse Gods? Thor is the thunder God which is correct I think, but what about Loki? did Marvel Purposely make him Thors Brother instead of what he originally was which was Odin's brotherm aka Thors uncle?

I've seen DC's Thor before. He was a lot different from MU Thor. He had red hair and a beard, got drunk a lot, and kept on talking about how big his hammer was :D
That Thor! He's always getting hammered! Then wakes up the next morning wiht a hangover, "my head's so thor!"
Someone shoot me.

Some of the Norse Gods appear in The Sandman "Seasons of Mists" storyline when Lucifer gives Morpheus the Key to Hell; Thor & Loki show up as representatives of the Norse Gods to get the Key to Hell.
For the Greek Gods, read Wonder Woman #1-24 (volume 2) by George Perez; they have been collected in 4 TPB's.

Vampires definitely exist in the DC Universe. The Batman and the Mad Monk mini-series pits Batman against a vampire, retelling a classic Golden Age tale.
The Vertigo stuff tends to take place outside of the DC Universe unless otherwise stated. Hellblazer, Sandman, Swamp Thing all take place in the DCU.

Hell... Looker from the Outsiders is a vampire.
And as far as Vertigo/DCU... pretty much anything that was in Books of Magic is happenning in the DCU. Constantine was Zatanna's college boyfriend.

The Sandman largely was pre-Vertigo & took place within the DC Universe proper. Fury II often appears out of costume since Morpheus is responsible for Hector Hall--the original Sandman--death!

Correction: Hector Hall was already dead by that point after the Hath-Set arc in Infinity Inc. Morpheus just forced him out of the Dreaming and into the afterlife... which is pretty impressive in and of itself considering Hector had no soul.
