I'm still without a computer but I have enough money saved up that I can afford a new one. However, I don't know which model is best suited for me because of all the techno jargon. I am tempted by the new cheap price emachines I keep seeing ads for but don't know how reliable they are so this is where you all become useful by giving me some ideas as to what to buy.
I just need a decent computer to store my info (movies games) and surf the internet. That's it. I won't be playing the latest games or juggling multiple programs.
So what to buy?

I also have to mention that I am ruling out buying a Mac since I just bought a new printer and it's not compatible (I think). Plus they're pricier.

It's worth it for a computer that lasts friggin' forever that 98% of viruses don't bother to include in their programming.
And yes, before anyone tells me, I realize that this is mostly because of Macs' tiny market share rather than any innately superior virus protection. It's still worth considering.

Epson Stylus Cx3810
And if it is Mac ready, where to get a cheap one or would I just go straight to the apple store?

Hell yeah. If you got a USB port, it's cool.

I was leaning towards those more than a PC originally and they could sway me the other way too(yes I'm still talking about the Macs).

As for where to buy, I'm not sure offhand. We don't have an Apple store here, but we've got plenty of good Mac sellers. I'll field that one to the Jew. In the meantime, though, you could poke around Apple's site and get an idea of costs and options.

Fabian: since you want plenty of storage space, I'd suggest making sure to get at least 80 GB of storage space.
And the more the merrier.

True.
I think 1 GB of RAM would be reasonable.
And even if the initial machine doesn't have that much RAM, you can upgrade cheaply.

I'm glad you've had a good experience with your eMachine. I looked into them a couple years ago. At the time, at least, they were generally cheap and low quality.
I ended up buying a custom built computer off eBay and I'm really happy with it.

thats cool i dont knnow if thats cheaper than an e-machine, but i just want to understand why e-machines has such a bad reputation other than besides being cheap to buy.
just for example my first comp was microsoft and i had all kinds of problems with it (im sure most of it due to my inexperience )

Microsoft is a software company. They don't make the actual computers, just the operating system for most PCs and various applications, mostly business oriented.
It may very well have caused all kinds of problems--MS software tends to be buggy, unstable, and easily exploited by hackers and people who write viruses and malware. But they didn't buld your machine. A computer manufacturer did that.

I see the Mac contingent has weighed in heavily.
If you decide to go the PC direction, though, I can heartily recommend the AMD dual-core processors. Mine flat-out eats through whatever applications I feed it.

Dells are pretty decent and cheap. You can configure a pretty solid computer for around 1k.
If you stumble into a Best Buy, consider the HPs. I'd stay away from the eMachines. They're the modern Acer or Packard Bell. Horrible computer brand; I've encountered many an eMachine with flaky components as a tech support flunkie.
If you want a cheap Mac, go with an iMac 17". They're not as expensive as you think and they've got more than enough computing power to last you a couple years. Or consider a Mac Mini if you've already got a monitor, keyboard, and mouse from another computer. All of them support Boot Camp if you want to dual-boot Windows later.

Personally I'd go with a MacBook, or if you want to go cheaper a Dell laptop.

get an AMD 64 bit system. Dual core, if affordable.
The 64-bit system will be gold as you get software that takes avantage of it.
