View Full Version : Authority... when does it die out?

I got the first four volumes of the Authority by Ellis and Millar and I really enjoyed them (for the most part, anyways). I got to the end of the fourth volume, which really seemed like a definitive (enough) ending for the series, but I know that they're still going with it today.
Question is, when, if ever, does the series have a sharp drop in quality? I'm not interested enough in the characters to follow them forever, but I do dig those kickass stories that really explore the nature of their intent and enjoy some solid widescreen action.

When Robbie Morrison started writing it.
Really, the first series (the issues by Ellis and Millar) is (mostly) universally praised, and the last issue of that series COULD have been the last issue, period.
Instead, the book was revived as a mature readers book with a C-list creative team. It blew, and the second volume ended.
It was revived again by Ed Brubaker and Dustin Nguyen in "The Authority: Revolution" and it was actually good. Of course, this was a 12 issue miniseries, and was the last Authority series as of now.
In the near future, Grant Morrison and Gene Ha will bring the team back again for it's fourth series. It'll be good. I mean, duh.
So just avoid every Authority story not written by Warren Ellis, Mark Millar, Ed Brubaker, or Grant Morrison.

I have an interesting theory about the whole Robbie Morrison thing.
You know how Robbie Williams and Grant Morrison are friends right? Well, one night when they were totally bent, the conversation went a little something like this:
RW: "I really like the idea of writing comic books, but I wouldn't know where to start."
GM: "HA! Great idea! Why don't I help you out."
RW: "Really? You'd do that?"
GM: "Yeah sure, I'll draft out some plotlines and you can put that wonderful pop-lyricist mind of yours to work on the dialogue and that."
RW: "Yeah, and we'll write under the name Robbie Morrison!"
GM: "AHH! That's brilliant!"
... Well, maybe not.

After the "replacement Authority" arc, the series was cancelled. All of the issues of that first series were incredible. They were collected in the first 4 TPBs. By the sounds of it you've read all the really good stuff already.
Then it was relaunched with a new #1 by Robbie Morrison that sucked. It was cancelled, and not soon enough.
Then there's Authority: Revolution mini which is apparently pretty good but I haven't read it.
Grant Morrison's new Authority series starts soon and pretty much has to be awesome.

Tom Peyer had some fill in issues near Millar's departure. They weren't horrible, but nowhere near as memorable.

Yeah the four tpb's are the only really good stuff out there. Revolution is OK but not worth it for the single comics. Getting a trade of it maybe but individually not worth the paper it's printed on

I disagree completely with this part of your statement... Revolution was amazing... no, bru didn't have the chance to really make the book "his own", but he did manage to fix all the f*ck-ups that editorial made to the title since the end of Millar's run and regain the focus that the title had in its hayday... most DEFINATELY worth it... maybe not worth going for back-issues, but when it was coming out, at cover price, DEFINATELY worth it

Can someone provide a list of the names of the trades in the order they should go? Even the Robbie Morrison ones please and thank you. I tried to figure it out over at the wildstorm web site, but I could barely make heads or tails about the order. Any help would be much appreciated.

Authority: Relentless
Authority: Under New Management
Authority: Earth Inferno & Other Stories
Authority: Transfer of Power
Authority: Harsh Realities
Coup D' Etat
Authority: Fractured Worlds
Authority: Revolution Book 1
Authority: Revolution Book 2
all the others (Authority: Kev, Magnificant Kev, Authority/Lobo, Human on the Inside) can pretty much be read in any order as they don't directly impact continuity or storylines in the primary title... though obviously Kev is followed by More Kev (which may be included in the Kev trade) and is followed by Magnificent Kevin... so there is some continuity there, but self contained for the most part

Woot. I'm gladd that was the one series I skipped. I got the first four trades, skipped that new series, then got the issues for the quite awesome Brubaker series. Also, all the Garth Ennis Kev books were neat. Now Kev's got his own minis going.
