Just a taste of what we'll have in store for us when Duncan takes over Hellboy (for the time being) with Darkness Calls in 2007:

I really like this sketch. It has some of Mike, mostly Duncan, and tons of fun thrown in for good measure. Kind of reminds me of the excitement I feel everytime a new issue of BPRD comes out- the chance to see Guy's gorgeous artwork and Mike and John's clear and awe inspiring writing. This sketch just further cements in my mind why Duncan is going to definitely sway the naysayers when Darkness Calls ships next April.

Duncan reminds me of Hellboy circa Seed of Destruction, when Mike's work had loads of detail in it, something that was missing from the last two mini series. I absolutely can't wait.

I looked through all those sketches and Duncan is the best one by far. There are some great ones and some that just dont capture Hellboy for example the James Jean. I wouldnt even know that was hellboy if it weren't for the horns.

Yeah, Duncan is and has always been simply amazing. I remember first noticing his work on Kid Eternity, but REALLY got jazzed about it on the short mini Jay and Silent Bob. Just something about his choice of camera angles and the humor he was able to instill in his work, really made me stand up and take notice. There's no one quite like Duncan! :D

Now my question is, whose pose came first?

Daveau82's : http://artpad.art.com/gallery/?j1igw312y2m4

Or Duncan's : http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=191609&GSub=30611&GCat=0&UC at=0

While they are worlds apart, I think Dave's captures a bit more humor but all in all Duncans is much more detailed and my fav.

BTW, this isnt a serious question ;-)

I would have to respectfully disagree with you. It's not that James Jean did a hellboy that is totally unhelboyish as one would think from your description. He just reimagined him in his own, unique style which in my humble opinion makes this sketch stand out even more as it is not a simple mimic of what Mike does by putting lots of darks and makin HB look square jawed. You should look onto cover of the first Wierd Tales, John Cassaday's Hellboy looks totally unmignolish and from what Tad and Mignola seems to be telling us from the interviews about the animated series that's what Mike wants to see more-> other, unique renderizations of his characters.

I completely agree that the James Jean sketch is his own, "reimagined" version of hellboy. And my point was that I wouldnt know it was hellboy if it wasnt for the horns, regardless of the fact of it not being a, "simple mimic" of mignola's style. In fact, I have rarely seen examples of a true mignola style mimic in comparison to other artists renditions. I like the the picture alot but it would not be my first choice in artistry as a hellboy fill-in, thats all.

I really like Duncan's take on Hellboy. I didn't look through all of those sketches, but his seemed to capture Hellboy better than some of the others I saw.

I thought the Enrique V. Vegas sketch was cool, too.

I agree. Many times Hellboy sketches come across as pale imitations of what Mike would create. However, Duncan brings a little something different to it, and still manages to keeps the spirit of Mike's work in there somehow.

I like that sketch very much. It has all the sense of it being Hellboy, without being a Mignola image. Some of the loose linework reminds me of Guy.

Bravo. looking forward to this mini series!

I was pretty psyched to see Hellboy rendered in Bermejo's realistic style, but I like what Fegredo has developed.

Wow, it's always weird to see convention sketches again, like time travel!

Man, that is a dody frog isn't it? C-, must try harder!

Love the frog, love the rendition of Hellboy. Time machine or no, I'm just glad you did it. As you can see Duncan, it's been a very popular sketch for people to look at and wonder what your work on Darkness Calls will look like. :)
