View Full Version : Classic Comic Trivia #1
Lone Ranger
09-25-2006, 09:47 AM
We have not had a trivia game on here for a while. I had a few good questions pop into my head over the weekend, so I though it might be fun to assemble 10 questions.
Here how this works.
Answer as many questions as you can - DO NOT look at other replies before posting your answers.
Answer only once - do not edit your answers at a later time.
DO NOT use the internet for help. That will suck all of the fun out of it, as these will be easy to answer.
There are 2000 possible points at stake. I have tried to distribute points according to difficulty but that's in the eye of the beholder.
The contest closes Friday at 5:00 PM EST, and I'll tally the points.
Do we want the winner to create 10 new questions?
Here we go. Good luck and have fun.
1. Jim Aparo’s tenure on Brave & the Bold is legendary, but did you know that 14 other pencillers worked on Batman team-ups between issues #98 and #200. Name 10 of them. 50 points each.

1. Jim Aparo’s tenure on Brave & the Bold is legendary, but did you know that 14 other pencillers worked on Batman team-ups between issues #98 and #200. Name 10 of them. 50 points each.
Nick Cardy
Jose Louis Garcia
Rick Estrada did the DC Brave and the Bold Super Special. Crap. I've got a pretty good run of B & B but that's all I remember.
2. Who was the first member of the Avengers to team up with Spidey in MTU? 100 points
Vision.
3. Name 3 publishers who have published comics based on The Shadow? 200 points.
DC
Warren?
4. Match the Horse with the Western Character. 250 points:
a) Ringo Kid -iii?
b) Johnny Thunder -iv?
c) Two-Gun Kid - i?
d) Golden Arrow - ii?
5. Aces High is remembered as one of the finest ‘New Trend’ titles from EC. It is often described as the high water mark of George Evans’ comic book career as he was a master of aviation action. 3 other creators worked on all 5 issues. Name Them. 200 points
Jack Kamen? George Evans? Jack Davis? No clue, really.
6. Steve Ditko introduced two characters in back-up stories in Charlton’s E-Man. Who were they? 150 points
Blue Beetle?
7. Which Charles Dickens book was NOT adapted for Classics Illustrated. 100 points
c. Nicholas Nickleby
a. Fantastic Four -- Thing. In trench coat.
b. Alpha Flight -- Was it Snowbird?
c. Uncanny X-Men -- One of Jean Grey's pretend magic kids from an alternate dimension, and, Jeezum, have I mentioned how much I hate the stupid-post Cockrum X-men and their worse than formulaic soap opera reject plots?
d. Avengers Black Knight
9. What do Zev Zimmer, Pierre Alonzo and Ace Aquila have in common? 200 points
I haven't heard of them.

1. Jim Aparo’s tenure on Brave & the Bold is legendary, but did you know that 14 other pencillers worked on Batman team-ups between issues #98 and #200. Name 10 of them. 50 points each.
1. John Calnan, (Plastic Man, I think)
2. Joe Staton, (Catwoman and at least one other)
3. Dave Gibbons, (Earth-2 Batman)
4. Irv Novick, (Flash)
5. Bob Brown, (Metal Men)
6. Neal Adams, (Teen Titans)
7. Rich Buckler, (pencilled a cover with The Demon, may have done the interior?)
8. Mike Kaluta (if covers count, on Swamp Thing?)
9. Carmine Infantino (or maybe not, I seem to recall him drawing the "team-up" with The Riddler?)
10. Don Newton? Maybe? I can't think of which he might have drawn, though.
At least one of the 15 was whoever drew the Legion team-up, which I remember being really awful. And Firestorm--was that Alan Kupperberg, maybe? Hey, don't count that one--unless it's right and Newton was wrong--the way I read the rules, as long as I name 10 of them correctly I get the points, they say nothing about extra wrong answers counting against me!
2. Who was the first member of the Avengers to team up with Spidey in MTU? 100 points
Thor is the earliest that I can recall.
3. Name 3 publishers who have published comics based on The Shadow? 200 points.
Archie, DC, Dark Horse are three, but not the only three.
4. Match the Horse with the Western Character. 250 points:
a) Ringo Kid i) Cyclone
b) Johnny Thunder ii) Arab
c) Two-Gun Kid iii) White Wind
d) Golden Arrow iv) Black Lightning
I'll try:
Ringo Kid: Cyclone (I think I saw this in a recent reprint)
Johnny Thunder: Black Lightning (pretty sure of this one)
Two-Gun Kid: White Wind
Golden Arrow: Arab (sounds least like an Atlas horse-name)
5. Aces High is remembered as one of the finest ‘New Trend’ titles from EC. It is often described as the high water mark of George Evans’ comic book career as he was a master of aviation action. 3 other creators worked on all 5 issues. Name Them. 200 points
Reed Crandall
Alex Toth?
John Severin?
Tough one for me, since it's one EC I've never sampled, but Crandall seems very likely.
6. Steve Ditko introduced two characters in back-up stories in Charlton’s E-Man. Who were they? 150 points
Killjoy and...umm...Liberty Belle?
7. Which Charles Dickens book was NOT adapted for Classics Illustrated. 100 points
a. David Copperfield
b. A Christmas Carol
c. Nicholas Nickleby
d. Great Expectations
c. Nicholas Nickleby...mostly a guess; I'm almost positive I've seen a CI Great Expectations cover, and Copperfield and Carol seem obligatory. (If, by some miracle, they never did "A Christmas Carol", then CI is probably the ONLY comic book to last more than 100 issues WITHOUT adapting "A Christmas Carol"!)
8. In November, 1986 – Marvel featured ‘portrait’ covers for its books. Who was the featured character on the cover of the following team books? 50 points each.
a. Fantastic Four
b. Alpha Flight
c. Uncanny X-Men
d. Avengers
I probably saw these, so it's not pure guessing since the memory must have lightly settled somewhere in my brain, but I'm still probably all wrong:
a. Invisible Woman (Thing is the obvious guess, but I believe he still had a series running, where his portrait would be).
b. Puck?
c. Wolverine?
d. Beast?
9. What do Zev Zimmer, Pierre Alonzo and Ace Aquila have in common? 200 points
That's 200 points I won't get.
10. Who is the unexpected guest star in Green Arrow (1988 series) #27? 100 points
Was that the one with Travis Morgan, the Warlord?

9. What do Zev Zimmer, Pierre Alonzo and Ace Aquila have in common? 200 points
10. Who is the unexpected guest star in Green Arrow (1988 series) #27? 100 points

....6. Neal Adams, (Teen Titans)....
Sorry, I'm going to de-rail here for a second. What issue is this? I know I used to (and may still have) an issue of B&B that Overstreet said was Adams, but I never saw anything in it that looked like Adams had even looked at it, let alone drawn it.

Thanks Kurt
I was actually trying to make it really hard - the kind of quiz where you'd feel good if you got half of the answers right.
Maybe it was a bit too hard - but I hoped that there was a little something for everybody.
It looks like you did just fine.
I hope that people find it fun and not frustrating.

We have not had a trivia game on here for a while. I had a few good questions pop into my head over the weekend, so I though it might be fun to assemble 10 questions.
Here how this works.

I thought that was Scarlet Witch who had pretend magical kids?
I hate those too.
Anyone with kids who don't exist.
Or kids from another dimension.
Or kids that are magically/technologically aged.
(I hate those most of all.)
Or kids that dissapear for a decade and are never mentioned cause everyone wants to forget the Spider-Clone.
Basically, I hate every child character in superhero comics except Franklin Richards and his new sister. And even Frank was touch 'n go for a while.

#102. Aparo did a few pages, then took ill, and Adams finished the job.
To be specific, pages 1-13 are by Aparo, pages 14-21 are by Adams and Dick Giordano and page 22 is Giordano solo.

Thanks, LR, but let's put this in context: it was the only one I had even an inkling of an answer for!

Nice job, as usual: it was a fun quiz!

Well, just for the hell of it, here's something stashed away in my records:
1. Jim Aparo’s tenure on Brave & the Bold is legendary, but did you know that 14 other pencillers worked on Batman team-ups between issues #98 and #200. Name 10 of them. 50 points each.
Neal Adams
Bob Brown
Nick Cardy
Joe Staton
Dave Gibbons
2. Who was the first member of the Avengers to team up with Spidey in MTU? 100 points
The Vision
3. Name 3 publishers who have published comics based on The Shadow? 200 points.
Street & Smith
Archie
DC
4. Match the Horse with the Western Character. 250 points:
a) Ringo Kid i) Cyclone
b) Johnny Thunder ii) Arab
c) Two-Gun Kid iii) White Wind
d) Golden Arrow iv) Black Lightning
5. Aces High is remembered as one of the finest ‘New Trend’ titles from EC. It is often described as the high water mark of George Evans’ comic book career as he was a master of aviation action. 3 other creators worked on all 5 issues. Name Them. 200 points
Bernie Krigstein is certainly one. The other two are semi-guesses: Jack Davis and Jack Oleck.
6. Steve Ditko introduced two characters in back-up stories in Charlton’s E-Man. Who were they? 150 points
Killjoy and Liberty Belle.
7. Which Charles Dickens book was NOT adapted for Classics Illustrated. 100 points
a. David Copperfield
b. A Christmas Carol
c. Nicholas Nickleby
d. Great Expectations
I’ll take a semi-guess at Nicholas Nickleby.
8. In November, 1986 – Marvel featured ‘portrait’ covers for its books. Who was the featured character on the cover of the following team books? 50 points each.
a. Fantastic Four
b. Alpha Flight
c. Uncanny X-Men
d. Avengers
9. What do Zev Zimmer, Pierre Alonzo and Ace Aquila have in common? 200 points
Everything except ‘their’ names - oh, and the fake mini-biographies which Richard E. Hughes wrote for ‘them’ in an attempt to add credibility to the notion that he didn’t write the entire output of the American Comics Group under pseudonyms.
10. Who is the unexpected guest star in Green Arrow (1988 series) #27? 100 points
How should I know? Speedy?
And I see now from your answers that Cardy is incorrect as a B&B artist (having finished as the regular artist a couple of issues prior to your cut-off point).
Did Al Feldstein not work on all five issues of Aces High? I may check on this (and on Carl Wessler).

I'm thankful for the Marvel portrait cover question because I could see all four of those covers in my mind's eye. That was two-fifths of my points.
Most frustrating misses? I was so close to putting JLGL as one of my Brave and the Bold guesses. And I own Brave and the Bold #200 and I missed Dave Gibbons. :o

You would have done well, T Guy.
Next time, perhaps.
I believe Cardy only contributed cover after #98.
In terms of Aces High - I don't know about Feldstein. I was basing my info on the GCD.
I just thought it was interesting that it often seen as a 'George Evans title', when you consider the company with whom he shared the book. You really need to know how to draw bi-planes to outshine that lot!

Next time perhaps I'll remember the deadline correctly. More. If all else fails, I'll have the courage to put in guesses (I'd have guessed JLGL for a B&B penciller, most annoyingly)(and speaking of B&B, I am missing about three issues of the run from 98 to 200 - the Adams Titans one and two circa No. 130, when distribution in the U. K. was what I believe is called sub-optimum - but still could recall few non-Aparo issues...).
In terms of Aces High - I don't know about Feldstein. I was basing my info on the GCD.
The GCD lists Feldstein as editor on all five issues. The writing credits are incomplete, but leave the possibility that Wessler and Oleck were both in every issue. Von Bernewitz/Geissman: Tales of Terror! has no further information, sadly (and looks like the source of the GCD credits).

As I did a typical rush job, I meant to specify 'artists' rather than 'creators'. Feldstein certainly was a creator and would be a correct answer.
