I just got the entire 4 issue Vigilante: City Lights, Prairie Justice mini series done in 1995 by James Robinson and Tony Salmons for $1.00.
Did I get lucky scoring the books that cheap or do they suck and was I ripped off?
I won't get to em for a few days, but James Robinson alone made me think it was a good idea.
Anyone have an opinion/thought they wanna share WITHOUT SPOILING IT?

I picked them up as my first purchase when I got back into DC comics early this summer. I dug it alot. The art was a bit too loose and sloppy at times but the story of mobsters and how Vig takes them out was very good. I was surprised to see the mini-series were published TEN years ago.
I'd love to see Vig again (I disliked how he was used in 7 Soldiers of Victory #0). In fact, he and I Spyder, are part of a proposal I'm working on for DC. *crosses his fingers*

Yeah it seems right up my alley... and the combonation of Robinson and the measly buck I paid for em I didn't think I could go wrong.
Other than Seven Soldiers (which I read) can you think of recent Vigilante appearances? How about other good stories?
Thanks!

I read the Vigilante series way back when Morrison's 7 Soldiers was just starting. When was that, the 1920's or something? Anyway, I liked it a lot. I thought it all came together well. Plus it was written by one of my faves, James Robinson.

The story is set during the 40s when Las Vegas is slowly growing. For a more in-depth history of this great character, go here:

I actually managed to track down a couple issues of the old Street and Smith Shadow comics! Not in awesome shape mind you... but I still got em!

Couldn't find any recent titles with Vig. Best thing is to hunt down the older stuff with the original 7 Soldiers.

Loved this series.
Excluding the loose continuity (Stuff showed up later) and not-too-neat artwork, it was a fun look at a neglected hero.
It laid the literary groundwork for Robinson's further work on Starman.
Other appearances of Vig was of a lighter nature, such as Impluse Ann #2 and El Diablo #12(?)

I remember that mini. It was very good.
It's been a long time, but wasn't the cover artist named something Chiarello, Vic or Vince or something?

Mark Chiarello, who is DC's art direction. He's done great covers for Dean Motter and Michael Lark's Terminal City from Vertigo, and illustrated Batman/Houdini: The Devil's Workshop Elseworld written by Howard Chaykin and John Francis Moore, which is worth it for the art alone. (The story let me down a bit, but any story featuring Harry Houdini teaming up with Batman pretty much has to be beyond spectacular to live up to the premise.)
Vigilante was a good solid series. At times it seemed like Robinson was writing about how much he loves Old Hollywood and Vegas, so I wouldn't rank it among his best work. I really like Tony Salmons' art (a bit like Eduardo Risso's work in 100 Bullets. Salmons is always listed as one of those artist's artist guys like Garcia-Lopez, Kevin Nowlan, and Alan Weiss, so I bet he was an influence on Risso), but I can see how it wouldn't be up everyone's alley.

I've yet to read it (almost there!)... but would you guys say it's more crime or action in genre?

I FINALLY got to reading it last night and this afternoon.
What a great series. I thought it was too short and could have been an issue longer... BUT I also thought issue 3 was a bore and not very enjoyable... so maybe if they had made that one better I would have liked it more.
I thought the writing was spot on... Robinson is a master storyteller.
The art was adequate but confusing at times, though not enough to make me dislike the presentation of the book as a whole. I loved the covers!
I thought the Vigilante was intriging and will be on the lookout for more!
Thanks to all who replied. I think I got my dollars worth for sure!
This was a great mini-series.
Good, interesting art, great writing and an engaging lead character.
I would love to see a follow-up.

Well, it's not a new comic series, but the original Shadow stories (and the Doc Savage stories) are coming back into print.
And I'll add my voice to the chorus saying that City Lights, Prairie Justice is awesome. Because it ballywell is. O yes.

Yeah the interior art was too chaotic at times but I loved the story and the covers were bad ass. YESSIR. For those who have Freedom Force 2, there is an awesome skin/mesh of him floating around out there. Complete with 4-6 different shooting poses, a stick of dynamite, lasso and his guitar!

I so need to get 3D Studio Max to make some custom meshes.
