Apparently Hot Topic in the States is starting to sell 'em, as well as Virgin Megastores. Take a look at these... they look magnificent. I wish Johann didn't look like he was full of snot, but Roger and the Alien look super.

http://board.mezco.net/showthread.php?t=8313

I've been calling around Calgary to see if anybody has 'em... nothing yet, but I expect they'll start showing up at Another Dimension, Phoenix on 17th, and Spencer Gifts.

If you guys see them, or buy them, post here and tell us where. And bring on series 3!

Wow, they all look really sweet. I like what they did with Johann's head. it's not completely clear but not just a solid block either, at least from what I can tell.

Love HB's rocket pack, just wish it was sold as an accessory instead of a compltely new figure. I just don't have a lot of space these days.

Thanks for the head's up!

The alien is rather cool.

I'd like to get Roger and clip him on my keychain through his ring. :D

Wish Rocket Hellboy had an exploding rocket with a sound chip "Oh Crap..." in it! But then that would probably invoke parental wrath, like the original Boba Fett rocket-launcher did :P

I guess I could always strap a fire-cracker to his back...

That is the best HB figure, ever!
They made Roger look much more sad and that made me love him, the alien is as cool as it was on the "coming soon" photos... But Johann... Johann looks like some kind of a aquarium that someone used to sneez into. I hope they'll make his non-sneezy version, the one which was in the previews avaliable somehow...

Edit:
And I'v just gotten my first figure of the first wave[beware the spooky ghost of LJO!]... It's good to be on time! :D

Sorry, Khan, but Mezco isn't doing any variants for this wave... at least, not with the first assortment. Keep your eyes peeled on Mezco's store for exclusives... that's where I got von Klempt with the swastika on his head and Hellboy with the trenchcoat.

I don't usually run out to get the figures, but that Johann looks a little too cool to resist.

I may have to go to the mall to Hot Topic and get one...

They're still not on Diamond's ship list. You'd think the comic stores would get them before the "Designer Darkness" boutiques.

Love the sculpts and colors on everyone but Johann. The yellow just doesn't work for me... but it's not that big a deal. I might pick them up.

I gotta agree with you. IMHO, Mezco really screwed the pooch here. While I appreciate that pre-orders via their Direct store were filled first, they are not distributing things equally via brick & mortar retailers. People on the West Coast have been reporting these in stores, and a few have trickled to eBay, but I'm loyal to my little comics store and thus far my dealer has heard nothing, including for the week of 9/25. Maybe the first week in October? Sigh. You'd think with just 4 figures and no variants (at this time), it would be a fairly easy matter to get a set. :evilangry

I checked out the Killertoys.com deal, and with shipping it'd cost me the exact same amount to buy all four as it would to buy Johann, Roger, and the Alien at retail. Looks like the Alien might be the popular one from this set, as it's already sold out.

I hear Johann is the shortpacked one, which I'm not too happy about because he's the one I want most.

Just as an aside; how cool would it be if Mezco did a pack of Mignola-style accessories, like companies did for G.I. Joe and Ninja Turtles? Imagine a generic BPRD agent with limited articulation, who comes with a gravestone, some skulls, some vials, and a sculpture. That would be awesome, wouldn't it?

Hey, I have an extra Johann still in package that I'd be willing to sell to you for $11.00 plus s/h ($7.00), if you're interested. If so, please email me at nhill_2001@yahoo.com ASAP. Thanks!

I'm really bummed about Johann. He should be like a frosted clear/blueish color...not snot yellow! What the heck happened!

Does anyone have this figure and can confirm that it's as yellow as it looks in those pictures?

The alien and Roger look great. I'm not interested in HB but he looks fine too.

edit: Does anyone here do casting at all? A clear Johann head would be worth having for this. I don't know how easily the head will come off though.

I don't know how easily the head will come off though.I just want to point out, it's quite possible that the brown/yellow was the color Mignola himself preferred. Licensors often--even usually--have to sign off on stuff like that. Maybe CBM would be willing to tell us something if we ask very politely.

Personally, I've always thought of Johann as more of a pink-ish color, judging from, for instance, Hollow Earth.

Neil Hill

For what it's worth, I really like the color choice! I think pinkish in plastic form would just look weird, and even frosted blue doesn't quite come close to the otherwordly sickly burnt umber that was chosen. Great choice IMHO!

DannyBoy7783
09-24-2006, 06:08 PM
In the BPRD, he is usually clear or a white/grey color. I checked A Plague of Frogs and the Universal Machine. Even Mignola's rendition at the end with Roger was a greyish/white color (though not translucent):

I don't recall ever seeing him look a sickly yellow, short of standing in front of something yellow.

mmmmm... don't like that Johann is the one hardest to find. He and Roger were the only ones I wanted.

Oh well, since Johann is going to be a main charcter in HB2 we'll definetely see another figure of him then.

It opens and closes just fine on mine. Others may be experiencing issues, but it doesn't appear to be effecting all of them.

Johann -
Someone from Hong Kong is selling on Ebay something he calls "Johann Prototype" and it's head is see-through beige plastic. Maybe it's camera, but it looks different...
(see attached image)

I wish I could go to the shop and get them. For people like me the only option is Internet and Ebay and then to hope that I don't need to fight with customs over them...

And one more thing about wave 2 figures I'd like to say -

I really don't quite understand Mezco's logic in selecting the characters. I understand that there was some sort of poll on the homepage, but I don't believe it can be the main argument. Ok, there should be 4 characters. If I'd make the selection, then it could be quite simple: one is another variation of Hellboy. Two from comic books. And one is someone who was also in the movie, if not Abe then why not Broom? I don't believe they want to sell those figures only to comic book fans and any character from the movie is much more familiar than anyone from comics.

This is not criticism, I'm just a little bit surprised.

I've picked up all of mine for around $15.00 a piece. That seems to be fairly standard.

Here in Canada I saw the original line for $15-20, depending on the figure.

Except for Kriegaffe, which was usually $30 in comic shops.

I picked up Johann, Roger, and the alien today at Spencer's. 15$ each. Johann isn't nearly as yellow as mezco makes it look in their thread. it looks more like old lemonade or sea water. Kind of just a dingy yellowish color. it's much better than I expected. It doesn't look like snot.

They also had HB w/ rocket but I didn't want him.

Several factors - Mez always wanted to do the comic because he's a fan. Hence the far out pic of the alien. Two, Abe is reserved to boost the orders of a potential series 3. Finally, costumed or powered characters sell better than old guys in suits - so you get Johann over Broom.

That's not based on anything I've heard (other than Mez being a fan and wanting to do comic characters) but from dealing with toy companies as they put together figure lines.

That said, I do think the Alien may have been just a bit too obscure a choice--much like Joey the Ball was in the first and, sadly, only Goon wave. There are several other characters who are less well-known than the headliners but certainly more popular and arguably more interesting than the Alien (e.g., Hecate, Giurescu's father, Daimio, and so forth).

Anyway, yeah, I'm second-guessing Mezco. But my only concern at this point is whether we get to see series 3. Assuming we do, I'll happily shut my big fat mouth. Or typing hands, in this case.

And I'm quite satisfied with the line-up for series 3: Abe, Frog Monster, Ghost of Rasputin, and Anung un Rama. That's a great line-up.

Kelly Tindall
09-26-2006, 08:31 PM
Oh, yes, absolutely. As far as I'm concerned, Johann and Roger are no-brainers, and the Alien looks so darn good I might just snatch him up, too.

Abe and the Frog Monster are no-brainers, too... and I love that Mez is doing army builders, too. Bring on the fourth wave... DEMONS!!!

SPOILER

I was thinking it would be kind of neat (or just morbid) to make a custom Roger after he was "killed". I was checking out a page from the Black Flame and it looks pretty easy to do. His "death" has really stuck with me and the stark image of his lifeless looking torso. Thoughts?

I'd listen to Tad, as he's recently had to go through the motions with Gentle Giant (at least I assume he has) in getting the Hellboy Animated figure deal going. In other words he probably has a more informed opinion than most of us do.

BTW, for any interested parties, I recently dug out the data from the Hellboy Poll's we ran last year on the Mezco site:

I know Series 3 isn't even a for sure, so speculation regarding Series 4 may seem insane at this point, but it never hurts to dream. :D

Phoenix Comics in Calgary has a whole bunch of the Series two figures, as well as the Hellboy-with-heads sets. Only place in town selling them today. I picked up Johann and Roger, and I'm very impressed.

Johann's ectoplasm definitely looks somewhat like snot, there's no question, but his head is eerily translucent and his sculpt is nice. I like the rubber belt-pouches on his suit, and the silver paint hilights are very nice.

Roger is a nice sculpt too, especially the face, but his legs and arms are quite skinny (very similar to Hellboy's left arm) and his feet don't sit flat. The flak jacket he wears is very cool... I actually think he looks better with it on. The crotch piece is huge, and my fiancee had a great time playing with his little ring. The chest hatch opens up pretty easily, but unfortunately there's nothing there... going to have to customize that one, I think.

I will probably wait until I can find The Alien for a little cheaper, but it looks great.
