Let's hear it from the hockey fans around here! J-Dog just sent me a nice IM about the Sabres new logo, and I for one hate it. If they wanted to go back to the original colors, that's fine, but they should have went back to the original logo instead of the art-deco (or whatever the correct term for it is) one they went with. Ugh.

NHL's Mr October.

I hate him and all the years the Canadiens wasted on him, waiting for his "potential" to kick in.

Go Sens Go!

And on that note let's talk about the one problem that has dogged this team for ten years...GOALTENDING!!!!

Anyone know anything about their new netminder, Gerber?

He was on the Hurricans when they won the cup, but does he still have it to take the Sens through to the finals?

Should be an interesting year. I'm pretty curious to see what effect Marc Crawford's departure will have on the Canucks.

I'm extremely excited about the upcoming Boston Bruins season. They finally cleared house of Harry Sinden and the boys who didn't want to spend any money on real big name free agents and then made a huge splash in the market by getting Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard. Along with signing PAtrice Bergeron and rookie Phil Kessel, this team may get out of the cellar and compete for a playoff spot if one of the goaltenders steps up.

It's bad, Denny. But I want to ask this question; is it worse than the Islanders logo that had the pissed-off Gorton's Fisherman on it?

As for me, I'm hoping the Hurricanes repeat this year. They might as well win the Southeast Division (even though Atlanta might be a bit of a threat). Here's who else I think could win their divisions:

Northeast: Ottawa or Buffalo- it's anyone's guess
Atlantic: New Jersey
Central: Detroit
Northwest: Edmonton
Pacific: Anaheim

The Sens still have to prove they've got the grit, they still come off as a weak finesse team that can get shoved around.

Does Dominck Hasek still have something left in the tank for the Red Wings?

It depends on how much of the load he's going to have to carry. I don't think he can be the warhorse of year's past, his seemingly endless problems with injuries would attest to that. If the Red Wings make the playoffs and Hasek is completely healthy, then yeah, he's got enough left in the tank to carry them.

Plus keep in mind the Wings have three goalies now. Hasek, Osgood, and the new rookie (can't remember name). Hasek and Osgood can both be spectacular. My only concern is how we'll fare having lost Yzerman, Shanahan, Mowers, etc. Hopefully Datsyuk and Zetterberg have another stellar year.

The Leafs made some typical offseason moves

1) Released old guys and signed old guys
2) Overpaid for a defenceman
3) Signed a goalie who could flopped badly

Yup - things don't change much here in Toronto.

As we approach our 40th year of futility, it's nice to know that there are still some things you can count on:

1) Toronto fans taking out mortgages for tickets
2) Vocal criticism of our best player
3) Guys with bad haircuts golfing in May.

Nittymaki's hurt in the preseason for the Flyers. Guess that answers who's going to be the main goalie.

Forsberg is playing though, that's good. He was expected to miss a good bit of the beginning.

No Primeau and no Desjardins sucks though.

It's kind of weird that Simon Gagne is the guy who has been on the team the longest. In my mind, he's still one of the young ones.

A) This was just the first game, and

The both suck equally.

Why do teams even bother changing logos? Unless you were the LA yellow and purple.

Do people really think the logo is holding fans back?

"Man, I really love hockey here in Columbus, and I love our terrible, awful team, but until they get a cooler logo, I'm not buying a jersey"

Yeesh, just put a better team out there, and the jersey's and shit will sell.

I don't think the new Buffalo jersey will last too long, it will go the way of the Islander's "Captain Highliner" logo, and they'll return to something similar to their classic jersey.

I think Edmonton did a great job slowly updating their jerseys (replacing the orange with copper being the best move), though their Todd McFarlane-designed third jersey is terrible. What the heck is that metal thing supposed to be??

Wow, Philly is doing terrible lately. 9-1 loss to the Sabres? And their effort against the Lightning wasn't inspiring either.

My feeling is that, after losing Primeau and Desjardins, they need to start a rebuild this season. They can fetch a pretty penny for Forsberg down the line (even though he's a UFA this summer) in terms of draft picks or prospects if they deal him to a center-hungry team like Calgary. Esche needs to be moved as well.

That was the first game I'd seen this season with either team. The Flyers are supposed to be much better than that, at least on paper, and Buffalo, while in possession of balanced scoring, shouldn't be able to just go in there and score at will like they did.

I will say, as an Edmonton fan, I really would like to see my team get back into the finals, this time against Buffalo.

It's a little shocking to see any team get drubbed 9-1, regardless of who's playing.

As a long time Habs fan, I can guess at what the atmosphere is like in that locker room after Hitchcock left the goalie in for that shelling.

BTW, last night's "Around the Horn" had a question asking "What are the odds the Sabres go 82-0?", which isn't possible, since there ARE shootout losses included to, plus with the fact that the Sabres may be good; they aren't invincible, and I do believe they might tire out once in a while. So, here's what happened:

Tony denounces it, while Woody Paige (my favorite guy on the show, except when Richard Justice appears every now and then) suggests it. Of course, in this show, any mentioning of a team doing GOOD in hockey docks you a few points. In the end, Paige loses 3 points for suggesting this.

Meanwhile, those Flyers SUCK! Forget burnout, the GM quit because he couldn't stand it.

I am actually shocked by the Leafs' record so far.

I went to a game against Ottawa last week (I only got once every few years - tickets are crazy pricey), and it looked like the Globetrotters vs. the Generals. The Sens were simply playing at a different speed - it was brutal.

I am pretty excited to see the Penguins doing so well. I love the youth movement that's going on right now. Crosby & Co. will bring some excitement back to this league. People are now trying to make plays rather than the freakin' dump and chase crap that bores me to tears.

I have a good feeling about this season for the Habs.

We have a balanced team, possibly even more than last year. Altough I still think Souray needs to be traded, he isn't our best defenseman and is only relied upon on the PP, so I'm willing to cut him some slack.

We have 2 great goaltenders, meaning after 75 games, we'll have 2 goalies that are starting caliber, have played at least 30 games apiece and are both not worn out.

If we can use this balance to overcome the Higgins injury, we should be ok.

It's like this, I don't blame Bruins fans for giving up on the team or the sport all together. When a great team is just run into the ground, well, it's shit.

The Canucks are just poorly coached and poorly managed. I know the feeling. I lived through Mario Tremblay, Rejean Houle, Alain Vigneault, Michel Therrien and Claude Julien.

I think Crawford did a great job here, but I also think he took the existing team as far as it would go, especially given Naslund's propensity to choke in the playoffs. But I keep thinking, we've replaced damn near everybody except management (including quite a string of goalies), and yet the same problems keep plaguing the team - a mindbogglingly shitty passing game, for instance.

Thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead.

Anyway, we all know the plight of the Penguins: They may have two of the most popular NHL players. However, you know that deal involving a casino company buying the club and using slots to pay for an arena to replace The Igloo? Didn't go through. So, after this season, relocation is 70% possible. Cities that could get an NHL team include Kansas City (didn't they have a team... that lasted one year in the UHL?), Portland, Maine (why?), Houston (my favorite pick), and they can become the first team since the Atlanta Flames to move NORTH of the border, to Winnepeg.

Also, Bettman wants to expand the nets, probably to increase the scoring. Does he want the league to become RHI, or is he just plain nuts?

Sgt. Preston
12-22-2006, 07:12 AM
Six foot wide nets are plenty big enough. If he wants to increase scoring more than he already has than perhaps he should try reducing goalie pads by another inch wide that way they'd be the same size as they were in the 80's.

And IMO Lemieux is just playing hardball to try and force Pittsburgh to spring for an arena. Hockey worked fine in Pittsburgh before, but good luck keeping it together when you're playing out of the 45 year old Igloo. Not that I wouldn't mind seeing Winnipeg get a hockey team again.

J. Robb
12-22-2006, 02:35 PM
I think the best way to increase scoring is to reduce the number of teams in the league. I don't think it's a coincedence that scoring kept dropping as more teams (and more mediocre players) were added to the league throughout the 90s.

Well, if they do relocate, it could have a drastic effect on my team, the Detroit Red Wings. Should the Penguins move to the Western Conference, there's a good chance the Wings will be shifted to the East. Talk about earth-shattering! Every feud, every team I'm used to, every game that's on late due to being on the West Coast......everything would change.

Actually, if they consider moving to Kansas City, Oregon (It's Portland, OREGEN, btw. Whoops.), Houston, or Winnepeg, I believe it's more likely that the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets would move to the East instead of Detroit, though I wouldn't count the Red Wings out.

New Jersey over Philadelphia, 4-3 in a Shootout
Atlanta over NY Rangers, 3-1

Tampa Bay over Carolina, 6-5 Shootout
Colorado over Detroit, 3-1
Dallas over Minnesota, 2-1 Shootout
Calgary over Edmonton, 4-0
St. Louis over San Jose, 1-0

And the Phoenix-Los Angeles game is still going, currently 2-1 LA.

So, ignoring the game that isn't done yet, I went 5-7, Jeff-E went 6-6, and Anthony Johanson went 5-7. Depending on the outcome of the Phoenix game, we may each go 6-7! Weird.

That was a great game. Lots of back and forth scoring.

Giving the goalies mics was a cool idea. Some of the stuff Marty Turco was saying was cracking me up.

Frodo-X
01-24-2007, 09:48 PM
That was a pretty neat idea.

I gotta hand it to the goalies for participating. For the players, it's great. Being on a team full of the NHL's best means great things can be done.

But the goalies have to put their egos aside, knowing full-well the potential for scoring that lies in an All-Star game.

The camera work on the All-Star Game was highly distracting at times. Kudos for trying something new, but I really hope that they don't do it during games that actually matter.

And what's the NHL thinking keeping this year's schedule for next year? The 8 divisional games are ridiculous.

Figured I'd go ahead and put Friday's up now, and give people time to get their guesses in.

Well, it looks like there's at least one match on Friday that Jeff-E and I won't agree on:

Red Wings vs. Blues

As for the other ten games, they are as follows:
Capitals vs. Hurricanes
Sabres vs. Blue Jackets
Islanders vs. Thrashers
Flames vs. Wild
Devils vs. Lightning
Predators vs. Blackhawks
Penguins vs. Stars
Coyotes vs. Avalanche
Sharks vs. Oilers
Kings vs. Canucks

Well my friend you were right there, I was just getting ready to post this:
Blues vs. Redwings
Capitals vs. Hurricanes
Sabres vs. Blue Jackets
Islanders vs. Thrashers
Flames vs. Wild
Devils vs. Lightning
Predators vs. Blackhawks
Penguins vs. Stars
Coyotes vs. Avalanche
Sharks vs. Oilers
Kings vs. Canucks

We do agree on a few though. Good Luck on your picks

Frodo-X
01-26-2007, 07:42 PM
Congrats, Jeff-E and your Blues!

On a related note, I will no longer predict the outcomes of games involving my Red Wings. I've tried three times, and it's resulted in a three-game slump. :(

Jeff-E
01-26-2007, 07:43 PM
One update, and I or Frodo will get the rest up soon;

Blues 2 Redwings 1

Sorry Frodo, but I hope you don't mind my excitement tonight:

LETS GO BLUES

Frodo-X
01-26-2007, 08:00 PM
I would make some excuse about how so many of the Wings were out due to the flu and such, but the guys who replaced them generated the most chances of the team.

So obviously that would be a flawed argument.

Whatever their problem is, I certainly hope they fix it before things get out of control.

Jeff-E
01-26-2007, 08:18 PM
So far we have

Blues 2 vs. Redwings 1
Capitals 2 vs. Hurricanes 6
Sabres 2 vs. Blue Jackets 3
Islanders 4 vs. Thrashers 5
Flames 1 vs. Wild 2
Devils 2 vs. Lightning 0
Predators 3 vs. Blackhawks 1
Penguins 4 vs. Stars 3
Coyotes 5 vs. Avalanche 4
Sharks 5 vs. Oilers 1
Kings vs. Canucks

what a night, this puts me at 6 and 4 with a game still to determine... I'm curious on the final out come I'm with Frodo, I'm curious if I go 6-5 or 7-4

Frodo-X
01-26-2007, 09:24 PM
The Coyotes have beaten the Avalanche, and the Kings/Canucks game is tied at 2 halfway through the third.

The outcome of that game will decide if I am better than a coin flip (6-5), or worse (5-6).

Frodo-X
01-26-2007, 09:42 PM
And the Kings win over the Canucks in overtime, making my record a disappointing 5-6 for the night.

Jeff-E's, by the way, was 6-5.

Jeff-E
01-26-2007, 09:44 PM
Blues 2 vs. Redwings 1
Capitals 2 vs. Hurricanes 6
Sabres 2 vs. Blue Jackets 3

Flames 1 vs. Wild 2
Devils 2 vs. Lightning 0
Predators 3 vs. Blackhawks 1
Penguins 4 vs. Stars 3
Coyotes 5 vs. Avalanche 4
Sharks 5 vs. Oilers 1

That makes a 6-5 night for me, and Frodo at 5-6, how did everyone else do?

Frodo-X
01-26-2007, 10:04 PM
I might not get online until late tomorrow night, so I'm gonna go ahead and post my Saturday picks now:

Rangers vs. Flyers
Bruins vs. Senators
Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs
Sabres vs. Islanders
Hurricanes vs. Capitals
Wild vs. Blue Jackets
Devils vs. Panthers
Predators vs. Blues
Penguins vs. Coyotes
Kings vs. Oilers

Hopefully I'll at least go 5-5 this time. It'll take some strong showings from the underdogs, though.

Here's mine, and good luck to everyone:

Rangers vs. Flyers
Bruins vs. Senators
Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs
Sabres vs. Islanders
Hurricanes vs. Capitals (they have to win one eventually)
Wild vs. Blue Jackets (This one is more hope than anything)
Devils vs. Panthers
Predators vs. Blues
Penguins vs. Coyotes
Kings vs. Oilers

That's quite a compliment, and I'm sure Briere would be flattered, but Briere is a less wreckless than Lafontaine was. Both guys are on the smallish size, but Briere seems to be able to avoid being injured as often as Pat was. Lafontaine just had no regard for his own body. If I'm not mistaken, Lafontaine is one of the few guys to have his number retired by more than one team.

Rangers vs. Flyers
Bruins vs. Senators
Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs
Sabres vs. Islanders
Hurricanes vs. Capitals
Wild vs. Blue Jackets
Devils vs. Panthers
Predators vs. Blues

Yeah, I predicted the Wings game three times, and they lost all three.

The new rule worked today. Wings beat the Avs 3-1.

The winners are....

Flames vs Blackhawks
Avalanche vs Red Wings
Stars vs Ducks
Flyers vs Thrashers

Well, the results are in. The audience for the All-Star game dropped 76%. However, there are good reasons to this. I mean, with regards to Versus, that's a crappy television deal right there. Plus, it's been more than two years since we had an All-Star game (2005-lockout, 2006-Olympics). And, obviously, not too many people beside us really care about the NHL.

They Flyers are the worst in the league by 11 points.

Thanks Frodo, the game was a blast, (except I had come down with a cold yesterday morning, so I couldn't even taste my beer, and I went in to a coughing fit in the first period and missed the Wild scoring... but who really wants to see that anyway?) and we had tickets right on the ice, I've never sat that close before, it was a trip. Everyone around me ended up either catching a puck or the ref tossed them one, and the seats were next to the penalty box so Jackman and the rest were right next to me when they got thrown in. It was great... Except the damage loss. But it was still fun. Here goes my picks for tonights games:

Sarge's Picks(winners in bold):

Bruins vs. Capitals- Hmmm, both teams coming off a win after long losing streaks. Gotta go with the Caps since they have Ovechkin and Kolzig.

Sabres vs. Thrashers- Thrash has been inconsistent lately and it's hard to pick against a team that has more 20 plus goal scorers than any other in the league. Sabres all the way.

Coyotes vs. Blue Jackets- Giving the edge to the Jackets cause of home ice.

Hurricanes vs. Canadiens- The wheels have fallen off the Canes' wagon of late, and I'm a die hard Habs fan so it's obvious who I'm picking on this.

Rangers vs. Devils- Why would anyone pick against the Devils? Brodeur is on fire, and the Rangers are on a sinking ship. Yesterday's Sean Avery trade will do little to help.

Predators vs. Penguins- "The Kid" is coming off a loss after a long win streak and the Preds are the hottest team in the league. Going with the Preds.

Kings vs. Lightning- After a disappointing season the Kings are in "fire sale" mode with several players involved in trade rumours. The Bolts have been on a roll lately.

Maple Leafs vs. Blues- The Leafs are another team that's rolling at the right time. Raycroft is coming off the best week he has had all season.

Wild vs. Stars- The Minnesota grudge match. Should be close, but my gut says Dallas.

Panthers vs. Avalanche- Going with the Avs as the Panthers have looked horrible this year. The fact that Nathan Horton requested a trade the other day won't help team chemistry.

Blackhawks vs. Flames- It's a home game for them and the Flames are on their typical season-end push.

Canucks vs. Oilers- Taking the Canucks in this one. Hard choice as both teams have been playing well lately.

Ducks vs. Sharks- The Sharks have been less than stellar after a good first half of the season. The Ducks appear to be rolling again after slumping a bit themselves.

Busy night with some great matchups. Looking forward to it!

Watched the Red Wings/Blues tonight.

After a player landed on the Blues goalie Legacy who ended up with his face (sans mask) on the ice. Sanford came in and finished the game. The 1-0 victory was the first combined shutout for the Blues since 1970. The two consecutive home victories over the Wings hadn't been accomplished since 1998.

The lone goal was from a rebound which went off the arm of a Red Wing defender, who might have been trying to swat the puck away.

There were quite a few spectacular saves.

Yeah, it was Chelios.

They really disappointed me today. Not only did they end their streak of not being shutout, which was somewhere in the area of 170+ games, but the goalie (MacDonald) still doesn't have a win, despite a stellar performance. The last time the Wings had so few shots, he was also in net. It sucks that this kid is doing his very best, and his teammates won't help him.

I believe the three stars were 3. Legacy 2. Whoever was credited for the goal 1. Sanford.

Which kind of makes sence since it did break the streak of 170+ games without being shutout.

Yeah, unfortunately for MacDonald he has had no goal support all year. Surprisingly, although the Wings are piling up the wins this year they're one of the most offensively inept teams in the league right now. Datsyuk and Zetterberg don't have much help now that Yzey and Shanny are gone and it shows. Hard to believe the team that in '93 broke all NHL team scoring records is now in such a state. It will be interesting to see if the Wings can light it up come playoff time a la the Devils teams of the past.
