Lightning vs. Rangers- The Bolts are on a roll, and the Rangers have hit rock bottom. Hoping to see a butt whoopin' as I've got tix tonight!

Blackhawks vs. Oilers- I just can't pick the Hawks like....ever. Hard to see the Oil losing to a team as bad as this. These are games they have to win if Mac T. is gonna take his team to the playoffs again.

Yeah, unfortunately for MacDonald he has had no goal support all year. Surprisingly, although the Wings are piling up the wins this year they're one of the most offensively inept teams in the league right now. Datsyuk and Zetterberg don't have much help now that Yzey and Shanny are gone and it shows. Hard to believe the team that in '93 broke all NHL team scoring records is now in such a state. It will be interesting to see if the Wings can light it up come playoff time a la the Devils teams of the past.
Even Datsyuk and Zetterberg aren't quite the threat they used to be. Zetterberg is still phenomenal, but Datsyuk hasn't been impressing me this year. It seems like for every dazzling move he does, he gives the puck away twice.

I can think of at least twice in recent games that a Datsyuk blunder near the blue line has resulted in a goal for the other team, including one that was a game-winner in overtime.

For a while it seemed like Cleary would be rising up to replace Shanny, but his fire died down and he's been pretty stale for a while now.

As one of the announcers said, the Wings at one point had several 500+ goal scorers, when they had Yzerman, Shanahan, Hull, Lucky Luc, et cetera, but now the ones with the most goals are barely over 200.

Even Datsyuk and Zetterberg aren't quite the threat they used to be. Zetterberg is still phenomenal, but Datsyuk hasn't been impressing me this year. It seems like for every dazzling move he does, he gives the puck away twice.

Well, one of the problems is they don't have an adequate winger to pair up with the two. Tomy Holmstrom is a great player, but he's not 1 line calibre. Datsyuk and Zetterberg have fared pretty well offensively considering.

As far as the defensive breakdowns, that's Pavel's MO. Maybe it's something about the name(i.e. Bure)?:D
He is young though, and Yzey wasn't always the defensive warrior he ended up being either.


For a while it seemed like Cleary would be rising up to replace Shanny, but his fire died down and he's been pretty stale for a while now.

Poor Dan Cleary. Another first round pick that's never lived up to the hype. Cleary's no Shanny, but he's a good 3 liner. What the hell happened to Robert Lang? This guy used to be competing for the NHL scoring lead! And don't even get me started on the greatness that was supposedly Jiri Hudler.

The problem for Detroit is obviously offensive depth. They had to get rid of the older guys cause of the cap, but they'll only get stronger in the end like they always do. I'm sure they have some russian kid in their system that no one else has ever heard of like usual. No one farms the euros like the Wings.

Detroit can still get far in the playoffs with some hot goaltending and sound defense of which they have in spades. This team reminds me an awful lot of those pesky Devils that swept your Wings back in the day. I'm glad my team is in the East cause I wouldn't want to face 'em.

What's the deal with Pittsburgh nowadays, anyway. Last I heard there was a possibility of them moving cities, likely to the West, and if they did, that Detroit may get moved to the East where they belong.

Agreed on the defense comments. Lidstrom alone means we have great defense, even if the other guys were crap, which they aren't. I mean, Lidstrom is currently a +36, and the nearest defenseman to that is Niedermeyer with +10.

As for the farming, I think you're right. Look no further than Valteri Filpulla. Sure, he's not doing great things right now, but you can tell he has it in him. He's done some spectacular moves, and if they can help him with his shooting, I think he could be very dangerous soon.

And I think Datsyuk may be gone when his contract ends, which I believe might be this year. From what I've heard, he's going to be wanting a lot more money, and I can't see the Wings giving it to him with the output he's currently generating, and his lackluster playoff history.

I'm not really shocked that he's given up. They had a spurt there where it seemed like the team had new life, when they won 7 in a row, the last 5 being road wins, but it seems like when they lost their first game home (to my Red Wings, oddly enough) they lost their drive and never got it back.

Good points Frodo. Yeah I suspected Phoenix would have a "fire sale" sooner or later, but I was somewhat surprised that they traded their best offensive player. I guess ol' Gretz got tired of Nagy never quite living up to his potential. Dallas gets some depth at offense, and Phoenix can rebuild for the future. A concept that fans down there must be really tired of hearing about.

As a Michigander (or Michiganian, if you prefer) I know all about the constant rebuilding. The Tigers had that for a couple decades, but finally did good last year, to my immense pleasure.

And the Detroit Lions are smack in the middle of a rebuilding century. Luckily I don't care about football.

Biggest Trade Of The Year!!!

Ol' Petey Forsberg just got shipped to Nashville for Scottie Upshall, Ryan Parent, and a 1st and 3rd round draft pick. The Preds traded away a good portion of their youth for a guy on the last year of his deal with what was considered a bum foot until all of two weeks ago. Granted, Forsberg has been probably one of the five best forwards in the league for almost ten years now, but was the cost too high to pay?

Well, the Flyers did try to resign Forsberg right up until they made the trade. Their management claims they would not have pulled the trigger on the deal if Petey had signed. I thought they did well on the deal. The Flyers were already in the Eastern cellar, and were able to get two prospects and a first and third round pick for a player they weren't able to retain.

Apparently Knuble got the worst of the collision. According to last night's news, Shanahan was treated and released. They didn't say he had any lasting injuries. Knuble, on the other hand, has a broken cheekbone and orbital bone. He'll be getting surgery once the swelling goes down. I'm guessing he must've hit the ice with his face to do that, eh? That's rough. I remember when Yzerman got hit with a puck that broke his orbital. They told him that if it got hit there again, it could kill him.

Didn't hear about Pronger. Did it do any damage that'll keep him off the ice, or will he just need some stitches or something?

The Blues just traded some of their best players off to teams still in the hunt. Which is really terrible since I think if they would have just held out until next year with the current coaching and the new players they were going to pick up anyway they would have had a chance. Now it looks like the Blues may be hosed for next year even. They actually let Tkachuk, Wideman, and Guerin, go... as they say in ebonics "We be f$#ked".


But didn't you get someone good out of it? I remember a few days before the deadline the Red Wings announcers (Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond) were saying that the Blues had picked someone up, and that pretty much confirmed that they'd be moving Tkachuk and Guerin, as they didn't have enough money for them.

The most shocking trade, in my opinion, was Ryan Smyth to the Islanders. I knew they were having trouble hammering out a new deal, but he's the face of the Oilers. I figured they'd either finally agree, or he'd be a free agent. Would've never guessed he'd be traded.

Yeah, I figured they wouldn't take the loss of Smyth well. It would be one thing if he went free agent at the end of the year and left. People understand that. Detroit doesn't harbor any grudge with Shanahan, for example.

In the two games Detroit played against Nashville on Tuesday and Wednesday I was sickened by the officials. Tootoo comes flying from the blue line and jumps off his feet into a guy on the boards; no call. Player is massively interfered with entering the zone; no call. Another charge by Tootoo; no call. Then they'll call the most superficial hook you've ever seen.

I mean, seriously, what the hell?!

I know that Zetterberg is the life blood that makes the Red Wings a powerhouse, but let's face it for a moment: the '90s and early 2000s are long gone.

Thankfully this is the NHL, where only the best get into the playoffs, and not the USHL, where everyone gets in and worries about losing to the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets, so I think they MIGHT get to the semis. After all, Detroit beats the best, like you said.

No offense, Jeff-E, but that was such crap!! The puck was sooooo over the line!

Whoever was working in Toronto and made that call is stupid. It's a logic thing; Puck is in the pads, entirety of pads are over line, therefore puck is over line.

That's not to mention earlier in the game when they blew the puck dead and the goalie didn't even have it, right before it was knocked in.

Referees and Toronto handed them that game. God, I hate the officiating in the NHL lately!!
