Its not only brilliantly drawn, its also an excellent discourse on what it means to live by the sword in the most literal sense. Inoue has really invested a lot of his story into the philosophy of a life in which people actively seek to kill or be killed by their skill and their determination.

On a semi related note. I'm looking forward to this game that's being designed by Vagabond's creator.

Sure, but it didn't do any of that as well as Lone Wolf and Cub or even Blade of the Immortal for that matter. Also it has the pace of a glacier.
Let's put it this way: I made it through 28 volumes LW&C and could only make it through four of Vagabond.

I only have the first volume of Vagabond, but I read the second volume as well. It's definitely good art and a good story (it was both done by the same guy who did "Slam Dunk"), so I do recommend it. There are times when it can be boring though.

I think he's doing it better than Blade of the Immortal. What you're referring to as the glacial pace of Vagabond reinforces the life of each character, which gives each death, and every fight, a much greater impact.
In contrast, BoTI is more action-packed and certainly faster-paced, but it's characters are so outrageous in many cases that it's hard to take them or the events they're involved in too seriously. Sure, you become invested in the characters, but their fights are spectacles, intricate relays of odd weapons and techniques, and the experience is nearly cinematic.
Vagabond is more poetic and philisophical. The world itself and the fights that take place are reinforced by brutal realism, and we spend a lot more time in the heads of each character, living their final moments with them as they place everything their life has led up to into a single moment in time. The fights are more poetic, but no less intense.
Blade of the Immortal is an awesome action ride, but Vagabond makes me really sit and think about life and death and the edge of a sword.

Vagabond is historical, enriched by Japan's ancient culture, and is about a real Samurai who wrote about the path of the warrior. That might also have something to do with the level or realism to it.
