View Full Version : Are The Simpsons BACK?

I'm not one of those people who thinks the show stopped being great around Season Ten or so. I think a lot of the later shows hold up very well to repeated viewings, and once in a while, the show still produces a classic (although I think complaints about story quality have some validity to them).
But what the hell? The first two episodes of this season had me laughing my BUTT off. For sheer funny per square inch, it's hard to beat Bart-Becomes-A-Jazz-Drummer, and him declaring his love for
'juzz' just killed me.
Wouldn't it be great if we were entering another Golden Age for the Simpsons?

While I feel I've somewhat outgrown the animated primetime sitcom, I do agree with you about The Simpson still be funny even when most people act like it had become so terrible. I'd catch a new episode here and there and be in hysterics! I guess I'll have to check out the new season now, to see if it is on the way to returning to the glory of its early days.

That "drummer Bart" episode had an off-the-wall quality that's been missing in recent years. The psychedelic chase scene with the White Stripes was hilarious. How stoned did the writers have to be to think that one up?

the characters had a different look to them on the Jazz one. The colors seemed a little brighter and something about the movements just looked different.
Seems they changed writers & possibly the animation studio...again. Every episode I watch has merit and humor. I think I saw Bill Odenkirk's name in the writing credits. If that's the case I'm sure we can expect some very classic moments in this upcoming season.

Richard Sakai wrote himself into the episode, too!
I liked the last couple of episodes, too, but I'm not exactly sure how memorable they are. Will we still remember this ep a few years down the line alongside the one where Maggie learns to speak or the Flaming Homer?
I guess I'm just kind of hesitant to declare this the new Simpsons Golden Age based on the strength of a couple of episodes in the new season.
Plus, episodes centered around Lisa tend to be among the better ones, anyway.

The first episode was boring as all hell, and the second while it had some funny bits, had way too much time spent on the music....lazy.

The Jazz one was really good, great plot and the funniest sign jokes in a long time.
The Mob episode had some good side gags but the premise didn't work for me. It's tough to base a story on a murderer in something like the Simpsons. There's never any penalty for what Fat Tony does. Krusty screws up, he pays hard. Same with the other Simpsons characters. But Tony just glides above it all so there's no dramatic tension. When there's no drama then the Simpsons is just Family Guy without the rapid fire gags.

I really liked the mob episode but didn't care for the drummer episode.
