Got this via e-mail from Gene, pleasecheck out the auction, its for a very good cause:
Earlier this year, I auctioned off the cover to the Fantastic Four Wedding
Special to raise money for the daughter of my late friend, Barry Winston.
Her name is Brianna and all of the proceeds go to her college fund. That
fundraiser was covered in a February Newsarama article. The auction raised
over $1100 and the anonymous foreign winner added a donation bringing the
total to $1400.
I am now auctioning off another piece of original art for the same cause. I
am selling the cover art to “Hellbent for Letters” an album by the band
Blöödhag. Blöödhag is a punk death metal band, with a specialty in songs
about science fiction authors. To promote literacy they play libraries in
addition to normal rock venues, and throw paperback novels at the crowd.
The cover is of a metal bikini clad librarian/barbarian standing victorious
over an army of fallen geeks. It’s set on the steps of the New York Public
Library. I’ll be paying for shipping and insurance, along with eBay listing
fees. Again, all of the money raised will go directly to Brianna’s college
fund. In addition to the original drawings we’re also including a one of a
kind 13”x13” Epson photo print of the final digital painting, and signed
copies of the CD and vinyl LP.
The late Barry Winston was part of my high school circle of friends. I had
fallen out of touch with my hometown pals in South Bend, IN until last year.
I then got in touch with a friend who was writing comics scripts for Barry
to draw. I wanted to get in touch with Barry, but I was waiting until he’d
had a chance to finish his drawings.
On New Year’s Eve Barry took a bouncer gig at an area bar. He needed money
to pay for the holidays and to fix his car. During a scuffle he went into
cardiac arrest and was found dead after the bar was cleared.
I ended up reconnecting with the South Bend crew at Barry’s wake. I met
Brianna there for the first time. She is a well adjusted twelve year old
with a bright future ahead of her. My friends had already set up a savings
account for her education. These auctions are my contribution to that
effort.
The auction ends Tuesday, September 19 at 6:30 pm Pacific time.
