If Ollie was training on an island and Detective Monkey was gone for a year, how is it that they're both appearing in 52?
Is it just a case of the various creators not co-ordinating their plans very well or is there some in-story reason for this?
The Detective Chimp thing might possibly be explained, we don't know, because the cover of #18 had "When is the Shadowpact" on it, so there may be an explanation we haven't had yet.
Regarding Ollie, it's pretty easy to fit his two appearances in to the timeline, assuming that his second one even happened, since Ralph may be all kinds of crazy. He goes to the island to recover, then when he's better he starts bringing in experts to train with. But there's a gap between his recovery and when the experts start arriving, because he says that it took time and money to get to them. So he could have gone back to Star City during that gap, met Ralph and realised what he had to do.
Then with the second appearance, it was a favour to a good friend, so he could have taken time away from training to do it.

Or the whole impalement thing happens after that issue of 52. Ollie was also fine during Infinite Crisis.
Dan DiDio explained at Wiazrd World Chicago that JG Jones drew Detective Chimp onto the cover without knowing he was gone for the year 52 takes place in. DC liked the cover so much they decided to use Shadowpact anyway.
They have not explained how they appeared in the comics yet.

Well Ollie is confusing anyways. If he was on the island for a year. How did he run for Mayor? I highly doubt anyone would vote for a candiate that is "no where to be seen"

I haven't gotten the impression that Ollie spends the whole year on the island. After all, when OYL begins, Ollie appears to have been in Star City for at least a few weeks already. He may have trained for a few months, then came back to appear in 52, and then resumed his life in Star City (including running for Mayor)

Yeah, the issue I read gave the impression Ollie had been training for about six months, not the full year.
