Recognize this classic Strange Tales cover?

What's that you say? No? You don't remember it?!

That's because it never was! Polymath artist/musician (and Doc Strange uber-fan) Howard Hallis has "retrofitted" those classic issues of Strange Tales with Ditko/DS covers. The results are fascinating. Hallis writes, "I always thought it was a tragedy that the first appearance of Doctor Strange, not to mention Eternity, Dormammu, Clea and Baron Mordo, were either not mentioned at all or only shown as tiny drawings on the covers of Strange Tales in favor of the more popular leading features. During Doctor Strange's legendary Steve Ditko run, Doc only had one full cover to himself, the last issue Ditko did (#146)...I decided to design my own variant cover, using Ditko's interior art from that issue."

Here's the link to the page containing ALL of Hallis's the "what if" covers. Great stuff! The variant #146 is my favorite.

In our little comic book world Michi I don't think I've seen anything quite so fine in a great while. That's simply gorgeous stuff. A rare case where the hypothetical outshines the reality. I am tempted to tear off the cover of my #128 in particular and shamelessly steal that reproduced "what if?" and proceed to slap it on in the pallid original's place (one of my favourite comics of all time BTW). Simply breathtaking stuff. Marvel, feeling a shame that no doubt is absent, should make up for a 40ish year old year crime and reissue Ditko's classics with those reconjured covers of past Ditko mastery. Many, many thanks to you for this Saturday morning treat.
