View Full Version : Mentally impaired posters

I have begun posting on a local newspaper's message board and have come across a poster that I am willing to bet has severe mental problems. She is clearly uneducated and appears to be emotionally unstable. We often joke around here about each other not being wrapped too tight and some of our braver posters with mental issues talk about it openly.
In fact, I have only come across one poster here at CBR that I thought had serious unaddressed mental issues and stopped talking with him. He has since been banned.
As they do not have an ignore feature I have simply chosen to no longer attempt to converse with her in anyway. I still see others engage and berate this woman and it bothers me.
Has this ever happened to any of you?

When I saw the thread title, I though this was going to be about the Rum . . .
No, forget it. Not gonna go there.
Anyway,if dealing with a poster who clearly has unaddressed mental issues, it occurs to me that baiting them and/or making fun of them isn't really the way to go. It's mean, assholish behavior.
Encouraging them to seek help for their problems seems the only good and sensible response. Once you think your message has got across though, feel free to avoid them. Just because you're concerned doesn't mean you've gotta put up with them. You aren't a qualified mental professional, they should be talking to someone who is.

In response to your question, I've experienced the situation in a couple of instances, although I was not directly involved.
Oddly enough, both took place on a sports board for college football. One instance of note involved an apparent suicide note from a long term poster. After the "note", he never appeared again and everyone on the board was left wondering what happened.
I reject the idea that it could have been a sick joke, because this poster was a long term member and posted sensibly for 3 years or so...then...almost out of the blue....WHAM!....he hit the board with that "note".
I agonized for a long time over this situation and then let it go, knowing that I was essentially a lurker and could not have controlled the situation in any way.
However, I've since attempted to make certain that I do nothing on boards like this one to make me guilty of effecting someone's life so badly and negatively that I somehow cause some type of trauma.
Let's face it. These boards are not mainstream in such that a large percentage of the world use them for posting...but you never know who may READ them and be adversely affected in some way within their personal life.
I heard a sermon about this same type of thing which I find quite relevant in many aspects of my life...raising kids...working...etc.....It's entitled "You Never Know Who's Watching".
I fail quite a bit in my endeavor, but I try to act as if any action(s) I take in life are viewed as something positive to emulate by everyone I come in contact with...my own kids....my friends...and "impersonal" posters on internet message boards....because...I never know who's watching.

I think most people can handle message board abuse well enough. If someone has mental or emotional issues though, you never know what might set them off and cause them to hurt themselves or others, so it's really bad form to egg them on or poke fun at them because they're an easy target. People do it though.

I have a customer at work who has various mental and emotional problems. He comes in and talks my ear off, and for the most part, he's fine. I'm pretty tolerant, so it doesn't bug me.
However, more recently, it's come to my attention that he uses his disability as an excuse to get away with poor behaviour. Basically, he acts like an arsehole and tries to annoy people and get under their skin, knowing that they won't call him on it because he's obviously mentally and socially challenged.
That, on the other hand, is not cool.
So I still tolerate him, but he gets nothing more from me than the minimum necessary responses. I'll give him yes/no answers to his questions, but that's it. He's burned his bridges with me.
Another person of my acquaintance had psychological problems which resulted in dramatic moodswings and aggressive behaviour. I put up with this for as long as possible, but he kept getting worse and worse, and despite continual reassurances that he was getting different medication that would help control this behaviour, continued smoking vast amounts of pot.
Basically, it got to the point where I was making concessions for his behaviour and he was making no effort to change or modify it. So yeah, I cut him loose too.

I'm not certain of the proper terminology, but I thought that "mentally impaired" meant retarded. Sometimes I see posts here at CBR that seem like they were posted by the mentally impaired, but it could just as easily be somebody who is drunk, or not very fluent in english, or really bad at spelling and grammar.

That Fedor guy's kinda hot.
Anyway... waaaaaaay back when, there was someone here under the monicker of "Superjesse," who was alleged to be retarded/devlopmentally disabled, and there were also posts alleged to be from his mother, chastising others for berating him, though I never saw anything directed toward him, that came close to being as abusive as what he flung at others. It was a very difficult time posting here, because his presence hijacked many a thread, and they became about him and how to deal with him properly, and his mother, who may or may not have been the same person, I never did find out which was the case, but I wasn't sad to see him go at any rate!
Retarded/mentally challenged/disabled/etc. is different than emotional problems which, in my experience, can be far harder to deal with than retardation, which generally means you're dealing with someone who's forever at an intellectual age far less than their physical.

Most online forums have their fair share of loonies, and sadly comic ones tend to share a few of them around. Chances are if someone goes mad on one forum they'll just move it onto another. With about 300 different user names. Oy.

I said UNADDRESSED mental issues. Yours have all been addressed and it has been determined you are beyond help. Now please go back to rocking in the corner.
A lot of people have been talking about retardation and I don't think she is retarded, although she does spout back nothing but Rush Limbaugh talking points. My gut reaction from her was more of an emotional problem that manifested itself in way over the top attacks and diatribes. (Complete with misspellings and atrocious grammar.) Its possible she is just an uneducated redneck asshole, but I kept getting the feeling that there was something more.

They did! It was really strange, because he'd post something that was really nasty, and someone would take him to task (see "Flamewar"), and then "his Mom" would come on, and tell them how bad they were and how difficult it was for him. I seem to recall Jonah having to get involved in the whole thing, before he was ultimately banished. That was around '94, or '95, if memory serves.

Some people join message boards merely for attention. they don't always had ADHD, they have what i like to call a dose of heavy emo psychosis.
on a final fantasy board i used to go to we had this 'Help With Life' section. wouldn't you know it, instead of threads like 'what colleges in boston are the best?' we got threads like 'I cut myself again', 'I wish i was dead' and at some point, some guy was blabbering on about how he was going to commit suicide. after watching about ten peeps post trying to convince him other wise, i jumped in and told him to do it. just quit bitching and do it. and what do you know? he didn't do it. and i got banned. meh.
all in all, the internet has become somewhat of a sanctuary where people think they can let it all out. perhaps it is, but i'd like to think there are more serious purposes for the web.

Understandable. Just for clarity's sake, I think the idea of the thread is how to handle those situations, rather than placing blame or guilt on somebody with a mental disorder.
Stellar
09-13-2006, 12:27 PM
agreed. so how do you handle such a situation? well if it's someone who let's say has down syndrome and sometimes posts things like 'Superman rules! he just does!', i think we should just be mature about it and not attack the poster in question. reprimand, perhaps, but not attack.
as for the trolls, well, there's a few ways to deal with them.
a. Attack
b. Attack with extreme prejudice
c. let the mods handle it.
a. and b. are mostly the result of an attack from poster in question, so replace 'attack' with 'retaliate.'

There was a guy on the DC Boards a few months ago, who just started attacking me from the first day he was there. He was relentless, and I decided just to stop responding, and see if he'd lighten up. He actually took that as a signal that he'd beaten me down, and that it was time to turn the heat up, and drive me away forever. What he succeeded in doing, was giving a good deal of information about himself away, which I was able to use to my advantage. I spent a bit of time, over about a week, checking out various things, via google, etc. (it's amazing what can be found with just a little info), while others suggested that I was fine, and perhaps he was the one with serious problems. Meanwhile, I waited. Then, when he opened his mouth again, I took the opportunity to let him have it, sighting a few reference points from his life beyond the comic book boards. Now I'm assuming he's been banned, but I've not heard of him since.

True mental disorders are difficult to discern sometimes from simple aggressive behavior. For instance, I have ADHD and a minor auditory learning disability (I used to forget entire conversations minutes after having them. It's better thanks to medication and therapy, but still difficult to deal with).
However, I am usually not adversarial, aggressive, or psychotic. I do not like using my condition as an excuse to commit bad behavior or to fail. As a matter of fact, if I could be normal (as in, not have this condition), I would probably jump at the chance. It feels like I've missed out on half my life sometimes.
Even so, I push on. I refuse to let my disability keep me from succeeding. It takes me much longer than others to master certain subjects, but once I do I never forget it. I may not remember everything my friends and family say, but I always remember the feelings behind their words. And I may not be the most socially adept person, but then I'm not alone in that regard.
People who use their disabilities as an excuse to get handouts or act however they want are contemptible. They make the majority of us look like retards, outcasts, or assholes. Just because God dealt you a different hand than other people doesn't mean the world or Him owes you something.
My view on abusive posters with such conditions.

As a mentally ill person I'm gonna take this opportunity to say you are all dancing around being prejudiced against the mentally ill. Remember, however annoying the mentally ill are, and however many Virginia Tech students they shoot up, you should be very glad that you are complaining about the mentally ill rather than being mentally ill.
It's quite a cross to bear being mentally ill, and the mentally ill could use all the patience and help that you can give us in dealing with our horrible problem.
In other words, "Nyah nyah! Made you feel guilty!"

Fly, I'm not prejudiced against you, I just think you're crazy.

Shut up and feel guilty like you ought to! And when people post about how the hard-of-hearing are a bunch of assholes then it will be your turn to lay the guilt on too.

Does guilt feel a little like "superiority"?

My wife was brought up a Catholic Democrat so she's got enough guilt for the both of us.
But we *are* a bunch of assholes.

I particularly like the big "What'd he say?" in block letters on the back.

Guy with weird fetish -- or bot programmed by some geeks at MIT?
BritneySpearsGuy has been going through some serious changes. After K-Fed got Britney pregnant the second time, BritneySpearsGuy changed his identity here to GingerSpiceGuy. Then, a few months ago, he notified us that he was no longer going to be GingerSpiceGuy, as he had married some woman from Asia. Nothing against women from Asia, but it seemed like a surprising choice for a guy who was so into Britney and Ginger Spice.

I can think of several regular posters who suffer from severe cases of recto-cranial inversion disorder.
Is this the clinical term for one having their head up their ass??
