I saw "Air Gear" in Barnes and Noble and it was the same size as the other manga. I thought that Del rey was making their older targeted titles larger. For example, Suzara is about an extra 2 centimeters bigger in each dimension.
this makes me wonder if the smaller size is due to a separate edition shipped to B&N or if it has always been that size, or if there was a change in editions.
Does anyone know much about this?

I know that the US volume of Air Gear is a good bit larger than the Japanese tankobon... I hadn't really compared it to other US manga, though.

Air Gear is "normal" american manga size.
i think they consider Air Gear to be like Negima — clearly shonen but with content not suitable for kiddies uner 16 or so.
Suzuka shows nipples GALORE and Basilisk shows nipples and violence GALORE — clearly meant for 16+ and must be clearly labeled, priced and distinguished from 16-. I have to say they give you extras, previews, color printing and excellent production. These mature books are not an eye-sore on your book shelf.

I like it but the manga is so much better as in most cases with anime.
