View Full Version : If You Only Bought One Marvel Title...

Which title would you pick up if you had to cut back to just one title? I know everyone here has different spending levels each month, and the number of books we each buy are quite different. Recently, I've been cutting back a little bit, and basically have - in my head - a prioritized list of titles. That way, I kind of know which is the "next to go" if I have to cut out some more books. Not that I want to cut any (honestly, I'd like to pick up more), but I still have an idea which titles are the most important to me. So, if you had to cut back to one title (or if you want to list a couple/three), which one(s) would they be? I'm thinking Marvel, but you can list DC/Dark Horse/anything else you want as well. Would you go with your favorite character(s), or would you go with what you felt was the "best book"?
For me, comics have always started and ended with Spider-Man. He's my favorite character, and has been as far back as I can remember. I always figure that if I only bought one book it would be Amazing Spider-Man - since it is the "flagship" Spidey title. However, we know it isn't always the "best", so there's always a chance it would be one of the other books. I actually like all of the Spidey books right now (Amazing, Friendly, Sensational, Ultimate), but I suppose if I really wanted to know what was going on in Spidey's world - Amazing would be the best bet. It would be tough giving up all the other Marvel titles I enjoy though, not to mention a few DC (Batman/Det, Superman, Superman/Batman, JLA, etc.) and the Star Wars titles. Anyways - which comic(s) would be the "last to go" for you?

Daredevil.
Brubaker is writing the best DD since Frank Miller and it's pretty much the best comic Marvels puts out these days. So my vote goes to Daredevil.

If we are talking about just Marvel comics I would say The Ultimates.
And for awhile I was actually only buying one comic and it was Planetary.

I would say Ultimates, but since it comes out every 5 months, I'll go with Daredevil.

She-Hulk, no question. Aside from its own considerable merits, if I had to cut back to just one title, I'd go with the one that features the widest selection of the rest of the Marvel Universe, in all its varied glory. Like Rick's bar, sooner or later, everybody comes to She-Hulk.
(That said, I'd really hate it if I had to give up Bomb Queen.)

Irredeemable Ant-Man. Kirkman promised 3 issues worth of story in each.

I'd say Ultimates. If you want me to pick something more regular, you'll have to get back to me.

If we're talking Marvel: Daredevil. If we're talking DC: All-Star Superman. No question.

The Punisher Max
I have always been a huge punisher fan but this dark and gritty, noir version of him kick alot of butt. i think he is at his best written by Ennis, no one can write him any better

I would have to go with Amazing Spider-Man. It may have its ups and downs but over all over time it is a really good series!

I'd have to pick Amazing Spider-Man.
Like scottv said, it might not always be the best Spidey title but as the flagship comic it's the one to follow to stay up to date with what's going on in Spidey's life.
But I tell you, I would really, really hate to have to give up Astro City...but as that only comes out once in a blue moon I'd probably just steal it instead! :evilsmile

Tuff Call for me as Ultimate Spiderman is my favorite book, but Runaways is the book i look the most forward to each month. I'll probably go with Ultimate Spidey.

Brubaker's "Captain America" without a doubt.

X-Factor would be a close second, though....:)

Cable & Deadpool, despite the fact that I care not for the leading characters overly so. :D

ESSENTIALS
Or is that not fair? :)
Probably one of the Spider-Man titles, but the most recent one I've read it MARVEL KNIGHTS and I think that's gone now.

If JMS Leaves: Fantastic Four
Else She-Hulk or Ms Marvel, it's a toss up..
Then.. Whatever Dan Slott's new book is. It will rock. It will rock like no other..even if I don't know what it is :)

Ultimates without question.

X-men by Mike Carey has been my favorite lately.

Daredevil or Ultimate Spiderman. Probably Daredevil. If I was able to stick with it through Bendis' run, I don't see me cutting it at all.

Astonishing X-men. The X-men were always my favorites in the MU, and this title has 6 of my favorites, and, while is no Daredevil or Ultimates, it's great too.

Hmmmm Astonishing. How could I forget that. That book FINALLY made the X-men good again.
Still if I HAD to drop all but one, I dont' think Astonishing would make the cut. I just have a feeling that all the coolness is directly from Whedon. If/when he leaves I hope the new guy can keep going with the X-men=Superhero theme that Joss started, as opposed to the soap opera crap I've seen for many many years now.

To be honest if I could only buy one title, I would get out of comics again. I would rather have none than one. It would be too frustrating for me know all the other good sh*t was out there.

Either Young Avengers or Ultimate Spider-Man.

Right now it would be Civil War but after its done with, I would pick up YA.
Then again, if I only had enough money for one issue a month, I would stop buying them altogether.

I would have to say Austonishing Xmen, but I haven't read DD yet, what is a good point to start on that?

Probably Nextwave.
Especially since Ultimates 2 is ending soon, and Vaughn is leaving Runaways.

Nextwave, Daredevil, Kabuki, Powers or Punisher MAX.
Although starting next month or so, Criminal will likely be better than most of those.

I agree with what a lot of others are saying. If it was just one Marvel comic, it would be Ultimates. If it had to be a 616 comic, it would be Daredevil.
I would vote with Ultimates but since it is one of the irregular comics, I'd have to say Squadron Supreme since it's more dependable.

Get DD now Brubaker started his run at 82 we are now at 88 so its only a few back issues. You'll enjoy it, i thinks it is the most adventurous in terms of art style that marvel have. Been great title for years and i like that it bubbles under the surface and is not massive

Captain America by Brubaker.
She-Hulk and Daredevil are close seconds.
VisionNick
09-09-2006, 05:55 PM
Daredevil and Captain America, with New Avengers right behind those two!
I've been thinking about what books I would keep at DC, and right now there's lots of good comics coming out from them, but nothing that I couldnt be without.

the thunderbolts. Its the most Hard Core Marvel Book ever.
If we are speaking as of this moment, I firmly believe that Hulk is the book I'm having most fun with from Marvel right now. Second considerations would include Runaways and Nextwave

EXILES, my friend, EXILES
after that... Runaways I guess

For me its Spider-Man. He is, in my opinion Marvels embassador if he was to go to DC or Vertigo or some other indie comic cross-over. His face is on the site logo.
He is the first comic you pick up as a child and you get a sence of growth with spidey...I thought I grew up with Peter. You get the good with the bad. Its not always wise cracks but some really hard times that I love to see him go through.
I think most people can relate to Peter/ Spidey which is another good thing.
If it wasn't Spidey then it would be the X-Men. Its about the outcast or the minorities that are not completely appreciated. But ultimately mutants are the same as Homo Sapiens.

If it's comics that are running right now, then I'd have to say either Runaways or Civil War. But if we're allowed to pick any comic in the Marvel line, whether or not it's running at the moment, I'd definitely have to go with Young Avengers.

With the Planet Hulk story line it would be Hulk!!!!!!!!!

Probably Astonishing X-men, but I would probably do physical harm to myself before I cut back to just one title

X-factor
One of the best Marvel Titles this year I think X-factor's ability to stay self-contained as well as a plethera of great characters makes this the pick.

right now I'm waiting/hoping that a new Thor series comes out
so I can say that if a new Thor series came out, Thor would be the only ting I would buy. I am also waiting for them to bring back Wendell/Quasar series again, which I also hope they do then I would get Thor and Quasar.
Magneto Rocks
09-11-2006, 12:19 PM
Right now, Civil War. On a regular basis?
Probably 'Captain America', followed by ASM. Problem is, when ASM is weak it's ver weak, when it's strong it's very strong- but Cap is consistently strong. Chief runner-ups would be the new Thor ongoing and FF. It's a sad day indeed when an Avengers title isn't on my hit list but since there ISN'T a real Avengers title being published by Marvel, it's not an option.

Amazing Spider-Man without a doubt. If not ASM the Essential or Uncanny X-Men :D
For Marvel: I would be torn between Runaways and Nextwave. But I could easily switch to just waiting for Runaways digests.
For DC: All-Star Superman. No question.
Magneto_X

Daredevil.
The character's title has been very consistant in quality ever since it was relaunched.
It always has great writers *and* artists.
Runners-up: Astonishing X-men, Ms.Marvel, Nextwave
For DC: Birds of Prey
Runners-up: Batgirl (Cassandra Cain version), Catwoman, Teen Titans
Nomad
09-12-2006, 04:10 PM
Cap!! Favorite run of all time.
Runners-up: Daredevil, Cable & Deadpool. More Brubaker goodness, or a few laughs.

If I could only have one comic, I would need to get tons of joy from that book to ease the pain of missing out on all the others. So I have to go with Cable & Deadpool, which in my opinion is easily the funniest ongoing around today. Gotta keep laughing to keep from crying.
rerun
09-12-2006, 08:49 PM
I would say Ultimates but its about to end (not sure about Loeb's run) so forget that.
So I would go with Daredevil followed closely by Young Avengers.

I would have to say that it'd be a toss up between Carey's X-Men and Young Avengers, with, if I had enough for three titles, it'd be Runaways.

I like the book, but does it bug anyone else that GR is thinking with Johnnys brain?
I know Blaze flip flopped quite a bit, but I always liked it when GR was a Seperate entity. Whether Demon or Spirit of Vengence it doesn't matter. Just gave him a more... otherworldly creepyness to him. Now Blaze is a little too "standard Superheroey"

Definitely Thunderbolts. No decompression, a healthy use of continuity without being bogged down in it, lots of subplots, great character moments, and maintaining a monthly schedule. By buying Thunderbolts, I know I'd get a full and satisfying read every month.
Runners up would be Cap and DD.
From DC, it would be JSA.

Runaways or Ultimate Spider-Man... technically, I don't buy USM every month, I wait for the hardcovers. So if i could keep doing that, definitely Runaways.
But if not, it'd have to be USM, it's deiniftely my favourite series.
