I've recently come back to comics and have been getting dirt from message boards such as these and have constantly heard the main Marvel Universe refereed to as "616 Marvel" as opposed to the Ultimate Universe and the like. Where did this name come from?

It's a reference to Alan Moore's CAPTAIN BRITAIN work from the early '80s.

See the FAQ thread.

There's a FAQ that's sticky at the top of the boards.
1. What does 616 mean?

616 is another name for the mainstream Marvel Universe created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and the rest of the Marvel Bullpen in the 1960s. It's a reference to an Alan Moore Captain Britain story, where every alternate reality had a designated number, and the MU's was 616. There's a good article on the topic at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth-616).

By the way, Alan Moore's CAPTAIN BRITAIN work is available in trade paperback form, and is a darn good read.

Yup. Alan Moore coined the numbering of the Marvel Universe as 616 in the multiverse.

Everything you read in the mainstream Marvel Universe happens upon Earth 616. It is a way of defining differences between stories which occur in the mainstream and in other offshoot universes, such as the universe from the Ultimate line, or the recently revived and continued Age of Apocalypse uionverse.

Been into comicas and specificaly spidey for about ten years. When i got online a few weeks ago sought out a few forums and ended up here posting away.

My question is what does 616 universe come from and mean? I see it posted alot but don't know its origin.

It will be a short thread but will fill a little whole in my head

Cheers

Earth 616, the mainstream Marvel Universe, is named by Alan Moore's Captain Britain run via Otherworld.

Jesus wept, can noone check the FAQ that is sticky at the top of the bloody forum.

Or even try a search, or even look down the page a few threads to see the same question already addressed.

i'd rather ask someone, if jesus is weeping that mush he wouldn't reply. One reply was more than enough to answer my Q.

Nice to get a pair of sarcastic ones to back it up

So you'd rather clog the boards up with crap by being lazy than just do a little research?

But there's no reason to start a thread to ask a question, that is already been answered. It's redundant. And it's the reason the FAQ section was made. And it's also noted in the rules to search or check the FAQ before posting a question. We're not being sarcastic, we're just tired of lazy posters who woud rather start a new thread about the same topic than actually look to see if the questions been answered.

Appearantly the answer is yes.

imagine that i type 616 in FAQ and get nothing as normal. I'd rather ask someone who can give a straight quick answer.

If the threads not your thing move on and don't post.

You must be the kind of people who love automated phone Q's must be perfect never having to get through and get a quick answer to a question from someone.

Dude, that's a lame excuse.

The very post above this one (as of my writing) is called "Sticky: Rules and FAQ for the Marvel Universe Forum (Updated 07/14/06)"

If you clicked on it and went to post #2 you would have seen:
1. What does 616 mean?

616 is another name for the mainstream Marvel Universe created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and the rest of the Marvel Bullpen in the 1960s. So there is almost no searching in the FAQ... just a quick scroll down to post #2.

But there's a FAQ sticked at the top of the forums. You don't even have to type anything.

You must be the kind of person who doesn't look at the instructions when buying.....something......and then phoning the manufacturer to get help when it you can't get it to work.

The answer to the 616 question is on the FIRST page of the FAQ thread right above this one.

Yes, imagine. Imagine that you went to the Rules/FAQ thread and scrolled down to the second post, where the first question asks what 616 means.

And that's why you got 5 smartass comments.

OK... we're being kind of harsh and unfriendly to the new guy... he did just join in August...

Welcome to CBR aepuk.

At the top of each forum area is a FAQ with conduct rules and some gererally asked questions (like yours about 616). I suggest having a quick glance at them (or at least in the areas you frequent) and familiarize yourself with some rules and easily answered questions.

Have a nice day. :)

I looked in FAQ at the top didn't check the FAQ thread in the forum.

And to be fair you read so may FAQ's that are a waste of time and so common sense i ignored it

thought a one post reply would be all i get and i ended up with a whole line of angst.

I can only apologise guys i will be less incompetent next time and ensure that if i am really unsure and want a little help that FAQ can't help me with I will drop Beast a message and see if he can help.

Your suggestion is bordering on instruction, and well...

But, yes. Welcome aepuk. In all seriousness, it would benefit you to read the FAQ in forums. Whether you like reading an impersonal FAQ is irrelevant, as eventually you'll no longer get serious answers.

Cheer shadow, thanks for the help.

I'm big enough and ugly enough to look after myself and to be fair i probably would get annoyed if i'd seena thousand pointless posts when i've been at this a year or two.

I just keep trying to be patient to learner drivers

Hi Josh,

i take it all on board, and to be fair it was the one burning Q i've had since joining.

FAQ will be the place i frequent now when necessary. I really had paid it no mind and this is to my detrement.

Sorry gang

Ditto what he said. We're cool. It's just we get the question at least once a week around here. No worries.

Yeah, the FAQ threads are what you need to check for. I didn't even think of that FAQ up there by User CP. That's more for technically aspects of the board itself. But the FAQ threads really can be useful.

You must have missed the word "suggest" in there.... not "demand" or "you MUST" etc.
