View Full Version : Kree vs Skrulls: Whose Side Are You On?

I remember when the marvel universe was more black and white. heroes good. aliens baadd! but it seems that anti-skrull/kree bigotry has lessened over the years. It's no longer unusual to have a Skrull on a superhero team (Fantastic Four, Runaways, Young Avengers) or seem them operating solo (Moral Man, Crusader, etc). same with the Kree. anyways, which group of aliens do you like the best? do you see either as an oppressed minority in the marvel universe? discuss.

The Marvel Universe has never really been that black and white.

I have always liked the Kree just for the fact that I could never understand how the Kree could keep from being overrun by the Skrulls, who seemed so much tougher and could change shape.
Of course they were a bunch of back-stabbing son of a guns but we cant all be perfect.

i can go either way. i used to hate the Skrulls because they all looked (butt-chin) and acted alike. but they won me over with the Super-Skrull Annihilation mini. that guy is fun. and the kree never much impressed me except for Noh-varr. how cool is a half-kree/half-cockroach? he kicked some major rear before he was imprisoned. anyways, i like that the writers are starting to humanize both groups of aliens; giving them individual personalities and looks.

I haven't read Marvel Boy yet but I plan to as soon as I can. I typically like morrison in general. As for the Kree I've read death of captain marvel and the last Captain marvel series but it just didn't click for me. But I'm pretty easy to sway as long as there a decent story.
I really like Ultimate Captain Marvel though.
I like the Kree since they gave us Captain Marvel I (Mar-Vell), Ms. Marvel I/Binary/Warbird (a human-Kree hybrid), Captain Marvel III/Photon (Genis-Vell), the Supreme Intelligence, Doctor Minerva, the Lethal Legion, Yon-Rogg...
I was rereading the Kree entry I surprised that the pink Kree came from cross-breeding with another alien race (another plan to jumpstart the Kree race). The blue Kree are preferred over the pink.
The only meaningful Skrulls are the Super Skrull & Lyja.
I would like to know more about the Kree's religion, Hala.

The Kree are a bunch of cruel, heartless bastards. The Skrulls are passionate, brave and noble warriors who are capable of seeing the good in their enemies (cf. Death of Captain Marvel). It's an easy choice.

This is funny considering the Skrulls were created to be Earth's big alien nemesis. But over time various writers have put more depth into the species, showing them to be much more grey than originally depicted. The Kree, though, are pretty heartless. Other than Captain Marvel and Ronan (to a point), writers haven't put as much characterization into them. I think that this is because the Skrulls are much more fun to write.

Skrulls started it. If they had not been total dicks and decided to give their tech to just one race the universe would have been a much happier place.
So I am a Kree man. Plus the Kree's leader kicks the crap out of some outdated space monarchy.

This is a bit tough for me. I like both and both have produced great characters to read.
I would like to know more about the Kree's religion, Hala.
Hala is the Kree's homeworld, not their religion. IIRC, the only close thing that they have to religion (aside from the Cotati thing) is a 'worship' for the Supreme Intelligence. The Kree are supposted to be a scientific race so its reasonable that they don't have an actual religion.

I was a mostly Kree kinda gal, but after reading the Annual crossover from the 80's A war to end all skrulls, it made me understand the skrulls a bit more, and made them more sympathetic to me.
Forget Elecktra, Skippy the Skrull is hands down the greatest Marvel character of the 1980's.

I loves me some Kree, pour on a little teryaki sauce, and they're great. They stay crunchy in milk. Actually I just really like the Kree, I think they are one of the better alien races in comics, and I would really love a comic that followed the Kree, but since that won't happen a comic that followed the alien races of marvel would be nice. Ronan the Accuser, Korath the Pursuer, Noh-Var, Yon-Rogg, even Phyla-Vell, could take the skrulls, I mean really what do they have? Paibok, Kl'rt, and Lyja? Pointy ears and funny chins? Bad hygene and yellow teeth? give me the Kree any day!!!

The "worship" of science & the Supreme Intelligence could be read into as a religion. Also, Hala--although the Kree homeworld--could also represent as their religion. The original Captain Marvel & Ms. Marvel always said "Hala!" when they were annoyed or upset in the same way the Shi'ar say "Sh'arra & Ky'thrie's claws."

Hey everybody, it's my first post.:) Anyways, I would definitley take the Kree over Skrulls any day. The Skrulls are vile creatures, constantly changing shape and always decieving people. Plus, they are not very formidable in their own forms at all(except for Lyja, Paibok, Super Skrull and a few others, but they were modified anyways). At least the Kree can fight on their own some. So where do the Shi'ar fit into this equation?

the Shiar are too pretentious, imo. the Skrulls might be vile but they aren't all that different from humans; socially-speaking. they have spouses, lay eggs, and raise their offspring. they follow one figurehead (i don't think they are freely elected, though). the problem is that the prime directive is to seek out other worlds to colonize. but that's the agenda set by the skrull at the top of the heap. your average blue collar skrull probably doesn't care much about taking over another world. they just do what they're told like good soldiers. if you read the current Marvel Team-Up, you'll see what i mean. there's a skrull in there who was sent to spy on the Avengers and was completely forgotten about by the Skrull Homeworld who decided that he was going to become a superhero; because he liked Earth so much. by contrast, the Kree are a bunch of hard#####. they attack Earth for reasons of revenge/pride.

Agreed thats why I said that closest thing they have to religion is a 'worship' of the Supreme Intelligence. But since they don't have a religion as we see religions, Hala isn't the word for their religion. Its the name of their home planet. And who wouldn't cuss out a world that destroyed its environment

The Kree view humans as slaves. The Kree are responsible for the creation of the Inhumans, genetically enhanced humans, who were to be a slave force against the Skrulls. However, the Inhumans rebelled after the Kree had "forgotten" about them for centuries.

I don't think so. They may have discovered them.
As far as which ones I root for, it's the Skrulls now...
The Kree politics and various races are just too damn convoluted!
if they created the Inhumans, did they create the mists?
The Inhumans discovered the Terrigan Mists. It's the primary reason why the Inhumans are so strict about the castes breeding because the mists create a permanent change which can have unexpected results.
I would like to see what happens if a Skrull or Kree is exposed to the Terrigan Mists.

The Kree experimented on early humans who became known as the Inhumans. The Inhumans' ancestors are baseline human with Kree genetic modifications. The Kree experimented on the human race because they discovered the Celestials performed some experiments on early humans which created the Eternals, Deviants, & gave the normal humans potential to become powerful from dormant genes.

Definitely the Kree; love Ronan the Accuser and the Supreme Intelligence. Plus as mentioned before, their ties to Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, the Inhumans, Lethal Legion, etc. Their ruthlessness and obsession with evolution and reaching their genetic potential give them the duke over the Skrulls for me. I hope Ronan and the rest of the Kree get some significant playing time in Annihilation.
I have trouble differentiating between the Skrulls other than Super-Skrull (who is a cool character, though) and have always thought they should be much more subtle given their shapeshifting abilities. Instead it seems like they're always fighting amongst themselves or just openly declaring war on other planets as opposed to being sneaky and machiavellian about their aggressions. Claremont used the sneaky approach with them really well circa Uncanny X-Men #275, when they took over the Shiar Empire from the inside without firing a shot, but that's kind of a rarity in their appearances.

The Warskrulls seem to be an evolutionary offshoot of the Skrulls. The Warskrulls have the artificial ability to mimic their victims' powers which separate them from their Skrull cousins; likewise, the Warkrulls are about 7 feet tall, muscular, & very brutish. The normal Skrulls are much smaller & cannot mimic powers of the person they are imitating (aside from the Super Skrull who has all the powers of the Fantastic Four).
