View Full Version : Brian K Vaughan and Adrian Alphona leave Runaways
Article (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=83023)
Well this news sort of ruined my day.

God, that ruined my day and probably my year.
Seriously, I feel betrayed now. I can't believe it.
So pissed right now its not even funny.
If Zeb Wells is the new writer I'll be really mad.
I'm so disappointed right now...
I wonder how this book will survive cancelation now. The new creative team NEEDS to be REALLY good.

I think Zeb Wells has done a fine job capturing the characters in the YA/Runaways Crossover. That said, I know who I would totally lose bladder control over on the book. Nunzio DeFillips and Christina Weir. :D

Sorry, it just doesnt make sense to me that both would leave at the same time. The artst didnt need brian to work on the book. Something is fishy.

Yeah, I read that today. As a big fan, it's kind off pissed me off.
*sighs*
I wonder if Mike Norton will take over for the art. I like his style for Runaways.

*shrugs* Eh, you know as much as people say Runaways is BKV's 'baby' I don't think new blood will hurt. I've said before that I love the concept of the Runaways but BKV's writing tends to leave me cold so I'm interested in seeing what another writer can do. Of course I suppose I'm in the minority as most seem to find his writing charming...

Fantastic idea! Tell 'em to call Quesada RIGHT NOW! Immediately! This MUST happen! Not that I'm happy that BKV is leaving (I'm not), but if he must be replaced, then....

It's really sad that they are leaving, but I have to give BKV and Adrian Alphona props for creating one of the best Marvel books ever. I've especially enjoyed seeing Alphona's progression as an artist over the course of the series. I think he's fantastic.

I have mixed feelings about this.
On one hand, Runaways is definitely BKV and Adrian's baby, and the sour taste left in my mouth by Runaways/Young Avengers makes me apprehensive about the book being handled by anyone else.
On the other hand, I think the last few arcs have been missing a crucial something, though I'm not sure what that something is. If BKV wants to leave the book before he feels that the quality has declined, I respect that and hope that the new creative team can inject something fresh into the book.
Also, (and I know that some people will cry "Blasphemy!") I really, really want Gert and Alex to come back from the dead, and that probably has a better chance of happening under new writers. ;)

Well, this is extremely surprising and not the least bit joyful, :(
That said, I'm hoping for a new creative team who can continue the caliber of work that's long been produced on the title. I'm kind of if-y on BKV's "you guys will be thrilled is probably an understatement," but that's probably just ironic memories from him saying, before it had really even started, how lucky we were to get Kirkman on Ultimate X-Men following his run.

Say it isn't so :( This news ruined my day. BKV and Adrian made Runaways a modern classic. The next creative team better kick ass.

Don't worry Tom Defalco and Rob Lefield are on the way.:p On that note I cant think of anyone currently in the marvel stable that would do this book well and marvel has a history of killing books with crappy creators. Maybe they can get louise on this or something.

How dare you bring up Rob Leifield!?
I can think of a few people currently on the Marvel stable that can do the series. If BKV has to be replaced I would like Sean McKeever become the new writer.

This blows, I absolutely adore the Runaways.
On the other hand, I'm wondering something.
I believe Joss has just about finished his run on Astonishing, and is probably the biggest fan supporter of this book out there. What are the odds of seeing Whedon take over the book for a short time?

That's a good point, especially since BKV literally drools over himself in Whedon's presence. :p

This is true. I love Whedon and all, but he does have a tendency (hee!) to run late.

Disappointing, but it'll be interesting to see who, if anyone, carries on the series.
As for Nunzio and Christina, I enjoyed their New Mutants but I don't know that their voice would work for me on Runaways.

Man, this is a serious downer. BKV is one of favorite writers. His dialogue is terrific and the plots are always unexpected. I hope the new team doesn't kill these characters. It would make me very sad.

While it's a shame to see Vaughan leaving the book, it's a credit to his writing ability that he's created a group of well-developed, 3 dimensional characters with clearly defined motivations and personalities. With such excellent groundwork already laid, it shouldn't be too hard for any writer to come onto the book.

Well, I certainly wasn't expecting this, at least not this soon. I'll see how well the next writer does and if not, at least I'll be able to save some money every month.

I wonder what he'll be working on next.
His Dr Strange mini is coming out shortly.
I wonder if they're waiting to see how well that sells.
He could be doing a quirky Super group containing Dr Strange.
There was mention of this being on the cards recently (Dr strange in a group that is).
I don't think a writer was named for it though.

i'm assuming the title's main pull is vaughn.
hopefully the title can survive after he leaves as that was his original intention (to create viable characters).

Unfortunately, this is the very approach that will end up killing the book. If fans leave the book due to a change in creative teams, sales will slump and the book will be cancelled.
The fact is, no creative team stays around forever. If people are fans of the characters, and want to see the title survive, they need to support it.
Imagine what would have happened if people stopped reading Spider-Man when Ditko left.

Dan Slott would be so absolutely perfect for this.
And yes, he can do dark comics, black comedy, action-packed extravaganzas and witty, clever dialogue with the best of them...Slott is not just about comedy or light-hearted stuff...
Now get him and Juan Bobillo ASAP

I'm as upset by this as anyone as Runaways is one of my favorite books, but with them staying on until issue 24 that means they've been with the book a total of about 3 and a half years including the first volume, so I can't really complain.
I'd say the two are going to work together on something else, or at least I hope that's the case. I just hope whoever comes onto the book does it justice and stays with it for at least a year.

i have to say that my first reaction was a sigh of sheer terror. i dont know why since i gather from past interviews that he (BKV) is on the way out... i guess i just hoped it will be in issue 51 (not including numbering from season 1)...
with that say i hope dan slott will take over - they did said he has something after civil war and it fits no?
sean mckeever - as much as i like him has a history of cancelled books, including after taking over BKV (mystique...:() so its a mixed thing.
as for artist. bachalo is my favorite choice too but i always wanted to see duncan realu (sp) drawing those characters.
anyway. im going to keep reading. i'm sad. but if the stories keep being good
and maybe even better if possible then it's fine.
maybe alphona could come back for 50.

I think I may have inadvertantly caused this to happen.
Y'see I was thinking to myself this morning, "When BKV says that he wants to have someone take over Runaways when he leaves, does that mean he's planning on leaving soon? And if so, when would that be? Issue 60? 100? 24?"
Scary thing is I actually thought 24
So there you have it. Sorry everybody, and I promise in the future to only use my reality warping powers for good. :p

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
This is horrible news. Runaways is my absolute favourite comic ever. I cant imagine runaways without BKV and Alphona. They MADE Runaways what it is today. An original, unique and amazing comic. Without them it will just be another comic. Unless they find someone really, really good. Even if they do,no one else will be able to live up to that standard.

Well, I hope that people will at least give the new writing team a chance instead of automatically dropping the book after #24. If the readers love the characters and want them to have a place in the Marvel universe, then it is essential that the book survives after Brian K. Vaughan.

I think it's artistically admirable that they're moving on before they get burnt out. It's a great book, due completely to their contributions. There are very, very few writers who would keep me on this book. We'll see.
