Im watching the Fantastic Four movie for the first and last time, and they're right, the Thing is a crappy, degrading name. Anybody have any ideas of what else Marvel could call him that sounds a bit cooler?

Nope. Thing fits him perfectly. It may be degrading, but Ben has never had the best self image.

Tallywacker?

Close, but I think Marvel needs to reach out to the Latino demographic that it lost with the cancellation of Arana -- so I'll say "Senor Tallywacker."

My 4 years old nephew always refer to the Fantastic Four as "Stone Man" "Fire Man" "Elastic Man" and "Invisible Woman". I always argue about it with him but it`s stuck in his mind, it seems.

Super Giant Fantastic Stone Stong Super Guy!

After over 40 years he just can't go by any other monicker. If he were created by Image in the 80's they'd have called him Grimmstone or something and be as forgotten as any of those other creations :)

"The Thing" may be degrading, but I think you're forgetting that his other nickname is

Similiar to what the hulk would refer the fantastic four , except switch stone man to rock man. Not sure what Hulk refers to invisible woman. ;)

Thing was once one of Marvel's most popular characters, easily in the top five. His team-up title, Marvel Two-in-One, was nearly as popular as Spider-man's, and lasted 100 issues, plus several annuals. His solo series right after that lasted for 36 issues.

The Thing was popular for so long because Lee and Kirby did such an amazing job on Fantastic Four's first 100+ issues. Also, Ben Grimm is a down-to-earth kind of guy who helps the reader relate to the bizarre situations that frequently happen in comics. His monstrous appearance, earthy sense of humor and working class heroics made him the underdog hero that readers loved to cheer for.

During the Jim Shooter editorial regime, John Byrne turned Ben Grimm from a sympathetic and funny underdog to a depressed and angst-ridden jerk. He quit the Fantastic Four, too, during a lengthy and popular run on that title by Byrne. By the time Thing rejoined the Fantastic Four, it wasn't as good a comic and Thing wasn't as popular a character. Both the Thing and the Fantastic Four have never recovered their former level of popularity.

How about no superhero name at all.

I think that's the best option. He's a contradiction as it is, a Monster's body and the soul of the everyman. Keeping his regular name..which is cool already, would just add to it.

But 'The Thing' is classic and will never change.

It would be "saken", and thats his name in recent books.
But it sounds extremly stupid in swedish.

In really old books he was called "Bamsen" witch will be something like The Big one, but it sound extremly stupid in swedish so the changed it to Big Ben.

The Thing in english is not only a thing but also it's alude to monsters, the Thing from the black swamp!!!.
You don't get that with the swedish word, his name is reduced to a thing like any car or fork or furniture or whatever.

I think thats why the choosed not to translate it first.

Today most superhero names is not translated at all, they keep their english names, but in those days they probably thoght the kids wouldn't understand and it would destroy the sedish language etc.

Some translated names sound so stupid you would laugh if you understood them :D
And many names that sound dangerous and adventuros in english sounds like jokes when translated.

Wasp = Get-inga:D

Dude you need to do a thread of just comic translation names. I would really like to know what some of my favorite characters are known as from different countries around the world. We could start with Sweeden, and hopefully others would join in.

Agreed.

Just calling him Grimm would be okay with me.

That would have been my suggestion too. Grimm. It still sounds scary and monstrous. But it's actually his public identity. So it works both ways.

Still I wouldn't want him to give up the Thing title.

Powerman was never published here so they never needed to think about that problem.
