Hey all.
I was browing amazon for upcoming trades I might be interested in and O chanced upon 'The Devil in Cell Block D', by Brubaker, collecting the most recent DD stories. Now I have never read an issue of The Man Without Fear in my life, though I know a fair bit about him. (I know, for example, that the story starts with him, Kingpin and Bullseye in jail, etc.)
Well normally I wouldn't consider picking this up, but I have heard rantings and ravings about how brilliant Brubaker's Daredevil is- indeed IGN in one review said it was the single best title on the market and in their overall consensus put it as the second best Marvel book being published behind Civil War. So that stirred my interest a little! So I was just wondering- have any people here read it in it's issue forms? What were there opinions? Is it really 'that' good? Thanks in advance.

I thought it was very, very good. I very much enjoyed the Bendis run and thought Bendis ended his run in a very strange place so it was interesting to see Brubaker's first arc deal with Matt's position.

AMAZING arc. Worth picking.

I agree with IGN.

Daredevil is the most consistently good title currently on the market....

I loved it. Matt Murdock crosses over into HBO's OZ, with Wilson Fisk as Simon Adebesi and Bullseye as Chris Keller.:D
Matt would be a more competent Tobias Beecher, I guess (as both lawyers and all), but then you get into that whole Beecher/Keller thing and that would just be wrong with Matt and Bullseye in those roles....
Uh, back on topic: Yes, it really is 'that' good.

Don't be foolish. Of COURSE I pick up Brubaker's Cap. I've been waiting years for a good Cap run, you think I'd miss it when it finally comes? ;)

...Well as I said, I've never read or had any desire to read Daredevil before. Aside from a few guest-star appearances I only really saw him in the movie, which wasn't exactly the best place to start :P
To be fair though, most views I've seen have placed it as just lower than Civil War. And while I do love Brubaker (3rd favourite writer in comicdom. 2nd favourite currently at Marvel) I like Millar more.

I don't think so. Brubaker's a fantastic writer, don't get me wrong, but Civil War is going to change the whole 616 universe for a long time.:evilsmile

Just because something changes the Universe doesnt mean it's good. Look at "House of M".
The premise of Civil War is good, I think the execution is flawed. That is why I would rank DD higher than CW.

That has nothing to do with Daredevil being ass-kickingly awesome. I really like Civil War, too, but saying "it's changing a lot of stuff!" is not really a testament to it's quality.
I think you non-readers are lucky, because this book is going to read as an unbelievable trade. Brubaker is the master of build-up/pay-off.

Just think about how awesome a blind martial artist locked in prison with quite a few guys with vendettas against him could possibly be.
You got it?
Really awesome, huh?
But Brubaker's Daredevil is even better.

People, please do not get me wrong. Brubaker is a GREAT writer. So far Civil War has been great, and its only going to get better.:D :D

Buy it! Get all the TPBs of Bendis' run as well. Then get the Visionaries collection of Kevin Smith's run. Then get the 2nd and 3rd Visionaries collections of Frank Miller's best issues. (the first is ok, but features several stories where he was only the artist) The buy the Man Without Fear and Born Again TPBs! So much good DD stuff out there!

Don't get me wrong, I've loved this storyline more than any of Bendis or Smith's writings, but my question is: how is it that Matt moved to get Fisk hit on purpose, but he couldn't stop the same Bullseye from killing Karen, or even Elektra, for that matter? It doesn't seem to fit...

Matt wasn't around when Elektra got killed.
And Karen jumped in front of a horribly beaten Matt and took the flying billy club when she got killed.
