View Full Version : What issue is/was your favorite?

Okay, we have tons of these things out, and I was wondering what ONE ISSUE of your absolute favorite current and or past series. I don't want 18 pages of titles with pics of different covers. When I say ONE ISSUE that's exactly what I mean. We can discuss these issues, and what we loved about them, but like I said, I don't want pages of just pictures of covers of the entire damn series.

Okay, I'll start. I absolutely loved this issue. It was the same, only different, if it makes any sense. It put her in a more mainstream/superhero universe, and gave her a actual uniform, but still kept up with past continuity, and kept up with the melodrama. I loved Paul Chadwick's awesome artwork on here, and while it was a drastic shift, I really enjoyed the changes. Archie Goodwin also seemed like, before the end of the storyline he was going, he had great plans for Alison, too bad he couldn't fulfill what he had planned.

It was a tough choice between this one and UXM #133.
When I was a kid the only place I could get comics was at the local convenience store. Through this store I had managed to pick up issues 132-136.
I was patiently waiting for 137 which guaranteed to be a whopper. Being a kid I quickly did other kid things and forgot about the next issue. Until I went back to the store with my dad to play Pinball (Meteor...a great pinball game that took many of my dads quarters). I glanced at the comic rack and saw a garishly pink cover with Cyclops leaving the X-Men!! My dad buys me the comic (after we play) and we drive home.
I immediately go to my room and read the story.
I learn that Jean is DEAD and that this was not the original team.
Because of this comic I start working with my dad in the summer (Landscaping) in order to buy the back issues of X-Men. I get UXM #18 purely on the fact it was mentioned in #138 and it was of Iceman fighting Magneto by himself.
Because of this obsession with the X-Men history my remaining X-mas consisted of me getting back issues of X-men.
In fact my greatest X-Mas was the time I got the complete run of UXM from #21-29.

Oh yikes. I'm as bad at making decisions as Jamie Madrox. Okay, well, I have a soft spot in my heart for New Mutants #45. It's the one where the kids go to a local high school dance and meet a misfit kid named Larry Bodine. He's a mutant, but no one knows that. In an attempt to fit in, he alienates the New Mutants (and Kitty) with an off-color joke about mutants. Rahne figures out he's a mutant, but before she can tell the team, a bunch of local punks start tormenting Larry, and Larry commits suicide. Kitty makes a delivers a eulogy for Larry at the end of the book, and talks about the dangers of labels.
The issue came out while I was in high school, and it meant a lot to me at that time in my life. I still get choked up when I read it.

And yet you already managed to soil it.
Single issues are SO hard to pick because they're inevitably part of something bigger, but after thinking I realised my favourite was actually kind of a one-shot.
Uncanny #205 by Chris Claremont and Barry Windsor-Smith.
http://www.uncannyxmen.net/covers/uncanny/uncanny205.jpg
It shows that Wolverine really isn't THAT tough, and the only way he manages to survive the attack from Deathstrike (her first appearance I think) is with help of Katie Power, a little girl.
A great story about revenge, and how far someone would go to get it.
BWS's art and colours were stunning, and i love the fact that Logan barely says anything until halfway through the issue, he's so messed up.
Just a great single issue.

Ooh, this is one of the few issues I'm missing from my Byrne/Claremont Uncanny run. See, that's what I love to read about, the stories of growing up, collecting these books, and the great memories you have with getting these books. It takes you back to that good spot you we're when you first got your hands on the issues.

In this issue, the X-Men are adapting themselves to live in the australian ghost city. They act like a family for the most part of the time, and there's also a cute (but kinda lame) plot with the objects stolen by the Reavers. It's Christmas time and the X-Men do the right thing! Plus: Rogue and Teleporter bond, Storm cleans up the place and Psylocke cooks!

This is the first comic a chubby little 7th grader ever bought with his own money. ;)
This was during the "anime" phase, so Joe Mad became "the man" to me. I always admired how he blended anime with contemporary American style comic art. I think he has been emulated more then any other artist during his "Uncanny" and "Battle Chasers" days.
But of greater significance was Storm. Rogue was my favorite as a kid because of the cartoon. A friend of mine loved Storm and i used to tease him. The cartoon made her seem sooo wimpy to me. Yea she was powerful, but she was always moaning and being overly dramatic.
I read this issue and was like "This is Storm?! Holy $#!% she's cool!!" Strong leader, strong woman: a powerful leading lady. It made me appreciate her a lot more, and also made me eager to learn what the other X-women were like and how different they were from the TV show.
From then on, Storm became one of my favorites.

One of my favorite runs of all time, Joe Kelly's X-Men really shined to me. X-Men #70 set up the premise of the X-Men living at the mansion after having everything wiped out by Bastion--furniture, technology, even wallpaper was no longer at their disposal.
This idea really humbled the X-Men for me and brought them down to earth. Cecilia Reyes and Marrow were bitches (:D) to be frank, but they were relatable and troubled in their own ways, despite their tough exterior. Storm was just badass and nobel, while Cannonball (especially in later issues) really shined as a charming southern gentleman. There were a lot of characters in it, but they all felt like they fit to make this beautiful puzzel.
I'd post other issues and some panels but I think that's illegal. :D

Psylocke's transformation into the ultimate woman warrior begins here as she is granted her heart's desire, but at a high price as she betrays herself & her fellow X-Men; Mojo & Spiral are central to subverting Psylocke, although the Hand is ignorant of their presence within Betsy's fragmented, amnesiac mind. Along the way her spiral of descent, Psylocke gives the reader hints of things to come with the other X-Men who traveled to the Siege Perilous: Dazzler is a singer, Colossus an artist, Havok is in Genosha, while Rogue & Ms. Marvel have killed themselves. With each X-Man's "death," Psylocke gains a new ring. Some other force tries to kill Psylocke--the memory of Slaymaster--but the Mandarin attempts to take control of the situation when he too dies as Mojo & Spiral reveal themselves to be the true puppet masters.
Psylocke wakes changed into the Hand's master assassin; however, the Mandarin is not sure of her alligence is true.

I'll have to go with UXM 297 -- Beast and Angel having a heart to heart, and Jubilee teaching Charles how to roller blade. The last scene where she helps him back to his chair is just heartwrenching.

I third this one for being my favorite issue. The characterization, the growing of a new team from three characters to, well a whole lot, the smartazz comments and interaction. It even had a foe show up briefly, to be confronted with Storm's sardonic "This is NOT a good time."

For me, it would be a tie between Uncanny #138 and #174. Since JSG2295 already mentioned 138, I'll go with 174.

In 1 issue, Claremont takes us through the various romantic interests of the team. There's a cute scene with Nightcrawler and Amanda Sefton, and a moving moment with Wolverine confronting Mariko shortly after their failed wedding. The highlight, however, is the Kitty/Colossus scene (one of their last happy moments together before the editorially driven breakup). There's also the big cliffhanger ending, with Maddy's apparent transformation into Dark Phoenix.
So much was happening in X-Men at this time. Rogue had just joined. Storm was going through a major personality transformation. Kitty was growing more and more mature with each issue. Wolverine had embraced the samurai way in his own miniseries. Maddy had just appeared, and everybody assumed she was Jean reborn. The book was in a state of upheaval, and Claremont produced a beautifully grounded issue that brought everything into perspective.

A lot of good stuff here! Triggering a lot of good memories and getting close to inspiring me to go dig out the "old stuff" all over again.
For me, my one favorite single issue is Uncanny #153 (Kitty's Fairy Tale). Aside from the Kitty-factor, it was one of those then-rare (well, heck, rare now again in today's arc-fest storytelling) single-shot stories that focused on character and the lighter side of life (rather than just saving the world...again). Even rarer as it wasn't just a single-story due to some guest-writer/artist having to come in as a filler issue; but was fully intended (afaik) to be the story that it was and to have its place in the run.
The X-Men were coming off of one grand adventure and getting ready to move onto the next. But there was still enough time for Kitty to tell little Ilyana (before her aged-to-Magik days) a great bedtime story that was a blast (and even led to Bamf reappearing later down the road as a character). Good fun all around! Nothing totally earth-shattering...but certainly fell in the lines of "and now for something completely different...that is quite good too!"

My favorite issue is X-Men # 24 with Rogue and Gambit on the cover. Fabian Nicieza wrote it. I think the title written on the first page is "Digging Deeper Between Hope and Sorrow" :p
And then there are others which I love as well.
What I loved about UXM # 297 is when Gambit comforted Rogue on the rooftop. Rogue told Gambit that he if has any feelings for her, he should leave. Gambit left but came back with a blanket and a hug.
Gambit: Everything's gonna be fine, chere.
Rogue: Promise?
Gambit: Promise.

Okay, I'm not a cruel heartless biatch, you may choose more than one, on the condition that you explain why it's your favorite. Tell me why it's your favorite, and ditto doesn't count. I dont' want a synopsis of what happened in the issue, but the emotions from the events that happened in the issue. Also, if you choose more than one favorite, it can't be from the same series. so, like if you already have a favorite uncanny posted, gotta go for New Mutants or Wolverine or whatever.

For me it was NM Special Edition #1. The way the entire team gets scattered around Asgard allows each a moment to shine. And that Art Adams art is phenomenal. Ya know, back in the 80's, alot of times, I liked the New Mutants more than the X-Men until Claremont left, and then, not so much. Don't get me wrong, Louise is a talented writer, but...she just couldn't catch the spirit of the New Mutants, and I really hated the title when she added her lame characters and took out Dani for Boom Boom of all characters.

Couldn't agree with this more. Claremont's New Mutants felt like living, breathing people with some of the coolest powers around - I loved Dani's "Greatest Desire or Worst Fear" Illusions. When Simonson took them over, they started to act about 5 years younger. It was hard to tell the difference between them and Power Pack.
Blevins' stick figure art and the introduction of lame characters like Gossamyr and Bird-Brain had something to do with it, too, but the New Mutants should have ended when Claremont left the book.

Way true. Dani was storm but with way more personality. Storm may have been the template, but Dani was the masterpiece. The art was soo moody, from Sienkhoweverhespellshisname, and through until Blevins came on.

Oh geez, it has taken me a few days to really think this over, as there are so many issues that standout in my mind. And at some point, I may have to pick one issue out of each x-book that I adore, but for right now, I'll name my favorite issue of Uncanny X-Men to date.
Issue #314.

This one's when Emma wakes up from her coma, takes over Iceman's body, and escapes to her compound to locate her students. What she finds is that they were all slaughtered in battle because she got them involved in the fight. Banshee and Xavier find her and talk her out of killing herself, and Emma confesses that her students would have been better off with Xavier, as she blames herself for their deaths.
This was one of the earlier issues of Uncanny X-Men that I ever read, and it was also one of the saddest and most poignant. I really loved Emma, because of the amazingness that was Generation X, and so I really sympathized with her in this issue. Her speech at the end is so sad and heartwrenching, and the computer screen with the names of all the Hellions listed as "Deceased" is very poignant. Scott Lobdell really knew how to write these more solemn tales (issues #303 and #318 also come to mind), and this issue is probably one of the more underrated ones.
But yeah, thoughts? Did anyone else really enjoy this issue as well??

Well since this is allowed now...I will write of my second favorite issue.
I was a young tyke who loved three comics in the world....Fantastic Four, Avengers, and the Incredible Hulk. I loved them so much that I actually scrapped up the money to get a year subscription to each one. I think it was 4.50 for each...I dont remember. In the middle of the comics they had a list of their other comics for that month ( what they have now, only bigger). Amoung that list was the Uncanny X-Men. That the X-Men was the hottest thing to come out of comics. I, of course, knew this was false because I subscribed to the world's greatest comic.
Nevertheless, I was intrigued, I believe it was for the fact that the group was fighting something called the Hellfire Club. The word "Hell" in a comic that had been approved by the Comics Code authority??!!! That was something I had to see!
I decided on a day I wasnt in school to go to my local convenience store to pick it up but alas there wasnt any to be found. I went to the "Stop and Go" where I got my Baseball cards (only S&G seemed to have them) but still no X-Men.
I went back home and begged my stepmom to take me to the store where me and my dad played pinball, I knew they had comics there. After much badgering, my stepmom agreed to take me. I went into the store and made a beeline for the comic rack.
On the rack were three X-men issues....132, 133, & 134. Now normally I would have taken the first of the series until i saw the cover to 133.
I couldnt believe it. There was a Superhero...on the cover...and he had claws.... Claws!!! Who had ever heard of such a thing? An apparent blood-thirsty hero who sliced and diced his way through the competition. This was totally unheard of by me...What a fresh concept. I bought this comic and started reading it on the way home.
I was not disappointed as this "Wolverine" went through guards like a man with dysentery through toilet paper. Wow, my new favorite character. Wolverine was the best!!!
This, of course, was before the massive influx of bloodthirsty heroes. Hard to believe now, but Wolverine was a fresh and exciting concept at one point.

Well, technically, it was supposed to be from another x-title, but since you so eloquently gave a back story on why you loved that issue, I'll let this one slide.

Does anyone notice that MOST of the issues mentioned are from the older series? Like pre-2000...is this a common sentiment among X-fans?

Way true. Dani was storm but with way more personality. Storm may have been the template, but Dani was the masterpiece. The art was soo moody, from Sienkhoweverhespellshisname, and through until Blevins came on.
Dani to me was one of the most fleshed out X-characters of her time. I thought we might get more of her in the new New Mutants series, but that wasn't to be. I wonder if she still has her Asgardian powers post-House of M, since they weren't mutant based?

All this talk about Dani has me re-reading my New Mutants issues, and I'm breaking my own rule, but there are 2 issues of New Mutants that are my absolute favorite. My first new mutant issue New Mutants special edition 1 was the first exposure to the muties, and made me absolutely fall in love with Dani. Her strength, and bravery to stand down to the riders who we're trying to kill Brightwind. She could be another Storm or Cyclops if succeeding writers actually got her character, instead of trying to figure out new ways to do her powers.

The second was New Mutants 18. Words cannot express how much I loved this series, honestly, the art was a bit jarring at first, but this issue made me fall in love with Dani, replacing Yana as my favorite Mutie.
