View Full Version : GANTZ - who has seen it / read it?

A couple of years ago when I first read about an anime that some reviewers were saying was an interesting, surreal, philosophical, violent, perverted and exploitative dose of sci-fi mindfuck, (while others saying it was sick or exploitative), I was interested in seeing it uncensored in all its glory.
I watched the anime, and enjoyed it more than a hell of a lot of other shows, (especially crap like Elfen Lied with its tedious plot and lack of good charecterisation, and yet is compared simply because they share similar violence) - it was full of dark humor, unpredictability, and managed to expouse some philosophy at the same time. The violence wasnt as bad as some of these reviews made out - but the show was probably one of the most twisted I had seen - reviewers who perhaps dont like a challenging or brutally honest piece gave it the bad reviews without appretiating it.
Then I read the manga, which is still ongoing, and along with only a couple of other seinen like Beserk and Monster, it seems to be amongst the most popular for the adult agegroup. Now that it is being released specifically for the English speaking market, it seems its becoming a cult favourite.
Anyone else seen Gantz? Anyone follow the manga regularily?

I've seen the anime & I am currently reading the manga.
I like the manga much more than the anime.
The manga is on hold until Novemeber at which point the second stage will begin.
I really hope the manga gets licensed in the USA eventually its such an amazing book.

The manga will probably be licensed - but I doubt the anime will be shown on any network uncensored. I think I might pick it up again with the next stage. Wish they did an ongoing anime of it now.

I think I'm gonna buy the Second Stage DVD box set soon myself even though I didnt really like the way the anime ended.
Its a good price (~$45-50 at Best Buy) considering that if you bought them as single DVDs you would pay twice that price or more.
I cant really think of anybody other than maybe Dark Horse that I could see licensing the Gantz manga.

We had some ridiculously huge thread on it somewhere.
One of the best suspense comics I've read, I think. Very good at doing unexpected twists, though at some times I think the author is just doing it because he feels written into a corner or bored. I'd very much like to see it be licensed by Dark Horse, or possibly Del Rey... someone with the stones to leave it just as it is.

Is that thread still around?

My favorite character was the dog.
I didnt like the all the whining in the middle but I suppose that is what they call characterization.
The ending makes you have to take up the manga.
A lot of my friends were pissed because of the ending.

But the ending was quite powerfull - the anime adaptation wasnt meant to be like the manga - it was meant to leave a nihilistic message about how at the start he couldnt give a shit, but faced with death, he ended up becoming loyal to friends and love and stuff - its like how the movie Stargate dosent bear much resemblance to the series - but both are good in their own right.

Can't wait to watch GANTZ. The last anime I watch is Monster..
Hopefully GANTZ can be better or on par with Monster..
I think from what I read, both are for mature audiences..
Hope that I can stand the gory part of it..

I just recently watched the whole boxed set (sets) and can't stop thinking about it. I LOVED it! Whichj is strange, because I didn't much care for Gantz at first. the pacing drags at crucial moments, there's a LOT of whining from Kei, and the sexual content was actually a turn-off. No way I could watch this with my wife, who can sit through a Godzilla film festival no problem.
But it's so damn unpredictable, and so absolutely joyously werid that i got hooked. I HAD to know what would happen next.
Now I want to read the manga and see the difference. But I'm glad i saw the anime first. It might've suffered in comparison to the manga.
As for that ending, the more I think about it the more I like it. But I can see where people might've been pissed off about it.

Must be. Can't say that I really disagree with that, although I wish the Croft look-alike was still alive. Yum.
