This is a little strange, so bear with me...

An artist friend of mine was visiting from CA this week. Saturday while I was working he sat at my desk and made a silly 4 panel comic strip in photoshop.

He is thinking about doing a comic for a con (more of a sketch book really) where there are no words and each strip is only 4-8 panels. The book would come with word baloon stickers....a do-it-yourself comic strip..

we think it's a very funny idea, and to get the ball rolling, he asked that I post this here...and I am making it a contest! come up with your best/funniest dialouge to this here strip, and I will send you a piece of original Hellboy artwork.
entries will be judged by my friend, who doesn't know any of you and canot play 'favorites'

here it is:

Cool, reminds me of the 'nuff said month at Marvel, where there were no word bubbles ot description boxes allowed.

Very clever comic, I think I already wrote my own word bubbles :)

I'm sure I get no points for saying I was thinking of doing that too...but I didn't. :)

Cute, really very cute...I remember something like this in a comic I used to read, had to fill in the comic bubbles, send it in, and if yours was picked as one of the better ones you'd win some original art I think.

I did a couple last night but couldn't post them 'cause me and computers are not one. I'm new to Photoshop and trying things out. I downloaded the wordless comic by right clicking the image and pressing Save picture as... I made my changes in Photoshop and saved them. When I tried to upload one in a post I got a message saying that the limit for this filetype is 19.5 KB and my image was a whopping big 936.8 KB. The only thing I could think to do was go back to Photoshop and use Image Size and change the dimensions. I got it as small as 43.7 KB (still too big) but by this time it was less than 1cm (1/4" in the US). Any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

That's really good Petriacce. How do you make word bubbles? Thanks. I pull the .jpg image into a freeware vector program. I usually type out the text first so I know how large of an oval I'll need. Then I draw the oval and attached triangle. I then create a larger one in black and set it behind the white one. I think they're easier to make in photoshop, but I haven't really go to play with that program very much.

Petersen
10-14-2004, 11:03 AM
In photoshop it's very similar..
add the type..
make a new layer for the baloons (behind the text), use the oval marquis tool and make a baloon around the words. add a tail with the angled seletion tool or the freehand version..fill white.

Then add a stroke around the baloon. (photoshop 5, you have to have all the baloons done then apply it all at once to the layer, photoshop 7 it's a dynamic effect you add to a layer.)

the prize: (10" x 14")
This is a piece I did for the exchange last year. Didn't like it then. It has sat in my garrage for over a year. This week I began destroying it... cutting it out, guing it down, polyurithane, torches, etc. and now...I like it.

I hope this gets more folks enter the contest!

Petriacce, your entry is great. You've really gotten good with the word bubbles.

Crossstreetartist, you've accomplished the impossible... you've taken the comic provided and not made it about fart bubbles! Well done! :)

Petriacce, your entry is great. You've really gotten good with the word bubbles. Thanks Gary. Sometimes I'll start to add the text while thinking of the balloon layout and it becomes very confusing and difficult. I usually stop and let it sit for a while. This one literally just fell together. It's similar to solving cryptoquips.

Crossstreetartist, you've accomplished the impossible... you've taken the comic provided and not made it about fart bubbles! Well done! :)Hey mister. You stuck the flatulence theme in my brain before I even started. It's beans for you sir. :p

I must say I am disapointed in the lack of entries.

with that said, it only made the judging harder...Mike Davis, the artist of these comics, called me last night and the winner is.

Sorry, Petersen. I would put the lack of participation up to the time of year. I know I barely have time to read the board right now never mind come up with novel turtle fart gags.:)

Mike also wanted me to make special mention for CrossStreetArtist's contribution. As a runner-up prize, he'll send the original drawing for this contest to CrossStreet Artist

I have a head code too! I think I got it at your end of the continent. Awww, we share the same virus!

Actually, the URL isn't parsing for me. It might work on some browsers, but it contains ASCII character codes ("%5c"s) that shouldn't be there. They should be "/". There's also an extra "/" on the end of the URL that shouldn't be there either. Here's the legal URL:

Yesterday was one of those days for me. I had gone to the mainland on business and while I was there BC ferries had a small disaster that shut down one of the two terminals that the ships use to get people back and forth between the mainland and Vancouver Island. My usual 2 or 3 hour trip took over 10 hours (mostly just sitting in my car waiting to board). I got home after midnight and crashed. This morning Morna presented me with a package that had arrived while I was away. It's my wordless comic prize. Thanks, David. It's a beaut. I like the packing method you used, too.
