I still don't really like that Cable just entered the fray. He's gotta be someone Carey is particularly fond of because he really isn't necessary.
Not really. Carey was going to use Psylocke instead of Cable, but Claremont had dibs. And what defines what is necessary in a comic? None of these characters are necessary; they're just characters the writer chose.
As for Cable, he's filling the role of grizzled veteran. All the X-Men are experienced, but none so much as Cable. Also, he has his close relationship with Cannonball as a sub-plot. He also fills the role of psychic...kind of. His new powers are still a bit ill-defined, or maybe not so much ill-defined as flexible.
It is a bit convenient for him to just stumble in, but he already made himself useful, and I'm sure his true agenda will soon be revealed. (Cable's a manipulative kind of guy).

No, i think some characters are necessary. The writer has an idea of why he picks who he picks, obviously. These are pretty much the members who are left at the school. Cable seemed so random to me, so it's still weird. But, as i stated, i believe Carey knows what he's doing.

And I'm guessing Serafina will end up being the Children's doom, since she's the only one of them who shows some human traits...saving the little girl in the first issue, and now developing a painfully human obsession with Sam...maybe she'll end up betraying the Children and join the X-Men someday.
If that happens I can see her having a relationship with the X-men similar to Mystique i.e. she'd only join them if it benefits her in some fashion.
After Carey leaves I hope Seraphina (and the "Children of the Vault") become permanent rogues of the X-men. Like Cassandra Nova is. :D
(Is it just me or are all the cool new X-villians women?!? lol )

Having disasterous relationships with members of the opposite sex happens all the time for gay men who are trying to deny who they are inside.
That happens to straight men, too.

I disagree. I think Bobby is a straight guy who is severely emotionally immature. Bobby's immaturity is the root cause of his problems with women. Simply having constant problems with women does not mean Bobby is gay.
If they ever bring back Cecilia Reyes (sp?) I hope they hook her up with Bobby. They had great chemistry in Joe Kelly's run. She even admited, in her thoughts, that she'd enjoy kissing him if she weren't on the run from the Prime Sentinels. :D

No, Cecilia must save herself for Hank. :)

Nah! I don't think Hank would be into Bobby.

Hehe. I just can't get into X-23. I think it's the fact that she's a Wolverine clone. Don't get me wrong, I like Wolvy, but the whole clone thing doesn't do much for me.
Oh, I'm so with you on Mystique's hotness. *drool*
Have you seen how she's drawn in New X-men? X-23 is hawt! :D

That may be true but with the X-franchise, exspecially the core titles, each writer/creative team only has as much control over the characters as editorial lets them.
If any of the big shots like Whedon or Claremont want a certain character (re: Kitty Pryde, Psyloche) they *will* get them. No questions asked. Then it's up to the others to think of replacement characters they *can* use. Obviously Carey used Cable for Psyloche (but I'd prefer her under his pen then Claremont's).

I don't see Cable as an replacement for Psylocke at all, at least in terms of character and even powers.

While I'm glad Claremont got to hold on to at least one of his characters, I'm curious as to what Mr. Carey envisioned for Psylocke.

Telepathy, for one thing. Wasn't that what he said regarding the whole Cable instead of Psylocke thing? That he needed a telepath?

He's a replacement in the sense that Carey can't use Psyloche for his story.

Er but she's not a telepath anymore?

He's doing such an awesome job with the myriad of abilities he has already, I don't see Carey falling for the "TELEPATH PLZ" trick. I mean, a telepath could have mucked up Aurora's brain...but Mystique did it a THOUSAND FOLD better by herself. That was awesome beyond reason.
I don't feel like Carey wanted Psylocke, either. Didn't he get everyone he asked for?

Either he wasn't aware of that, or he was planning to change it.

No, here's some evidence, guys:
I’d originally opted for Psylocke in the Cable slot, but Psylocke was going to be in Excalibur so we did some horse-trading – ‘if I took Psylocke away from you could I give you so-and-so?’ ‘No – can you give me Cable?’ and he went away and talked to Fabian who decided it wouldn’t conflict with what was going on in Cable/Deadpool so I got green lighted for that.

Cable has been under-used recently, apart from [Fabian] Nicieza's excellent Cable & Deadpool series, and it seemed to make sense to put the spotlight on him again. Also, I wanted the team to have a powerful telepath, and with Psylocke’s departure I was casting around for someone to fill that role.

Agreed. I find it fairly limiting to qualify characters as "neccessary" as that if a writer has plans for him/her, that should be what classifies them.

I liked this ish a lot. Things are developing well. The creative team's got a good handle on actions sequences. The only negative is that maybe the Children are too powerful. If they've been established as so powerful, how will Carey make it seem realistic that the X-Men can beat them. I'm glad to see the rehabilitation of Rogue continue.
I haven't read much of this thread, so I don't want to write a lot and duplicate other people's musings.

Whatever. Carey is cool.

Another three weeks before we see the likes of the X-Men again.... Damn.
In the mean time, I vote that we come up with our own speculation topics, until then.... I'll start:
1) Since Beast has been featured in a couple of X-Men issues, do you think he'll play a bigger role somewhere down the line in this particular book?
2) Seeing that the X-Men always come out on top, do you think the Children will die towards the end of this arc, or just kind of fade away in defeat?
3) Are you looking forward to Carey's next story arc?

1) I hope so. I really like Beast. I also like seeing Cyclops and Emma in this book. Somehow I don't think we'll see much of them beyond this arc, however, as Carey has stated that Rogue's team will be leaving the mansion.
2) Good question. I'm betting Creed and Cable off a couple of them.
3) Yes, especially since I have no idea where he'll take this team next or even who will be on the team when they leave the mansion at the end of the arc.

What do you mean? Maybe I forgot what they are actually trying to accomplish, but win what?

I'll take Rogue's phone number thank you! Or her mother's;) Yeah I gotcha now though.

That's your opinion, but it certainly doesn't make it fact.
cant the same be said bout you and what you think of bobbys sexuality?
Meanwhile Aurora is facing some of the students. She quickly er...almost kill X-23 and Mercury but her next oponent is a surprise!! Her other personality is standing right there!! Poor crazy Aurora! Mystique plays her like the bitch she is.
i hadn't noticed it was mystique!:p now it makes sense lol. thanks for the review!
When Serafina sees Lady Mastermind laying there, she makes contact with the machine helping her and make her own illusion with Sam stuck there! The girl is eager for some dirty fun!!
same here...i didn't know that serafina was using lady mastermind's powers! i thought she just wanted to kill her
great issue, this is becoming one of my favourite series. the line-up can't be better! except for cable, but let's see how carey handles him
just one question: does lady mastermind have any past issues with mystique? i remember her in that arc in wich mystique injured banshee by slitting his throat. is that possible? i'm not familiar with the character, is there something important i should know? thanks!;)

I wonder if Bobby's unexpected romance is with Aurora... After all, he did take her breath away... for lack of a better term.

Yeah, start a relationship with Northstar's twin, that's a good idea. But it would be better just to admit that he has feelings for her brother and is using her as a substitute:D

IMO there is so much that can be done with Cable because he is such a complicated character, and so different, in terms of personality. It would be pretty cool to see him cured of the techno virus, just to see what he's like with all of his powers (he'd basically be like X-man right?), saying that, It'd be annoying if he became another uber powered character, who makes the rest of the team and all tactics completley redundant.
Cable vs. Psylocke is a no brainer in my opinion, Psylocke would be best in X-men (though it makes sense for her to be back in Excalibur I suppose) but I'm kinda biased because I love everything about her lol :)
Is it just me or does Rogue seem a little darker than she used to be? She's always been one of my favourite characters and Carey's presentation of her (like everything else so far) is superb, can't wait for the next issue!

It already happened a long time ago. Cable was burning his body (like X-man) and was so powerful that went kind of nuts and tried to become a messiah and bring the world together before he died. He was only stopped after Reed Richards called the Silver Surfer to kick his butt, and after that Deadpool lobotomized him so that he wouldn't have his powers anymore and would not die. But he's still with the messiah idea, he's running 2 countries now.

lol guess I should be reading back issues instead then ;) I'm pretty new to the X-books and although I've tried to find out as much about the characters' pasts as I can, there's is just way too much out there, so you guys will have to forgive me if I ever make any dumb comments like that :D
May look into Cable's history a little more, though to be honest he's probably one of my least favourite character (he's really low down on my list along with Iron Man, Bishop and Stacy X).
I kind of hope he'll be replaced, but I know it's never going to happen so I guess I'll just have to accept it lol
