View Full Version : Why I Love Everything That Is Lorna "Polaris" Dane

You've seen that Dazzler thread. You read through that Chamber thread. You loved that Monet thread. You still go nuts over all those Rogue, Jean, and Cyclops threads. And you might even remember that Cannonball thead. But now, for your viewing and posting pleasure, I give my Top 10 Reasons, why Lorna Dana, aka Polaris, is by far, the fairest X-Man of them all.

10. SHE HAS GREEN HAIR.
Long before Viper, Dr. Samson, and Agent Brand came onto the scene, Lorna was proudly sporting the green do. Editors and writers seem to forget its part of her mutation, but the fact that she still has her green locks proves that she is still technically a mutant.

9. SHE WAS THE SECOND X-WOMAN TO SHOW THE X-BOYS WHATS UP.
Have you heard the phrase, "First is the worst, second is the best"? Well its true. While Jean was busy with Cyke, Lorna was busy getting her flirt on with the other x-boys. And she also showed her feminism in the 60s, before it was even cool.

HAVOK: Lorna and I'll look thru them for info on Karl Lykos!
ICEMAN: Just see that that's all you do, friend! Lorna's MY chick, remember!
LORNA: I'm nobody's property, Bobby, except my own! But this is neither the time nor place to talk about that! [Uncanny X-Men #61]

LORNA: Bobby's fun, Jean- but I'm nobody's girl! [Uncanny X-Men #60]

8. SHE IS ONE EDUCATED WOMAN.
She put her education before her superheroing when she and Havok quit the team to go pursue their degrees in geophysics. Half the X-Men probably didn't even graduate high school, let alone go to college. So props to Lorna for making college the cool thing to do.

7. SHE'S SASSY, FIESTY, AND FUNNY.
Lorna has always been one fiesty, sassy chick. She actually has a personality.

"I'm not one to criticize, but I've been eavesdropping on every one of your dramatic entrances...and you people are in desperate need of new material! Creative you're not." [Lorna lets the Genoshans have it in X-Factor #91]

6. SHE'S BADASS. DO NOT MESS WITH HER!!
Anyone remember that time she wiped out all the X-Men at her wedding without even breaking a sweat? Or that time she almost let Nurse Annie almost have it? Lorna is fierce. Her powers are strong. Do not cross her.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/hyperv909/Polaris/flyingnun.jpg

5. SHE'S HALF-JEWISH.
You may hate this retcon, but whether you like it or not, Lorna is Magneto's daughter. That makes her partially-Jewish. That is awesome.

4. SHE GETS POSSESSED, FINDS LONG-LOST RELATIVES, GOES CRAZY, AND GETS TURNED INTO HORSEMEN OF APOCALYPSE LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS.
Writers love having her get possesed and re-possesed over and over again. And when she's not brainwashed, her boyfriend is. Can't these two catch a break? But it's all good, because Lorna always triumphs in the end and shows the villains what's up.

3. HER COSTUME CHOICES WOULD GIVE JOAN RIVERS A HERNIA.
Love them or hate them, Lorna certainly loves having provocative costumes. Whether adorned with headpieces and skulls, bathing suits, or bat wings and a halo, Lorna still manages to pull each outfit off, because she's awesome. Anyone remember this "hormone inducing" outift?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/hyperv909/Polaris/Hormone.jpg

2. HER BOYFRIEND IS HOT.
Whether you like them as a couple or not, Lorna and Alex will forever be a supercouple of the x-men. They've been on-again off-again since the 60s, and I personally think its time for Lorna to get knocked up and marry Alex once and for all. He's absolutely gorgeous, and Alex and Lorna are meant to be. They've been through as many trials and tribulations as Scott and Jean, but one thing has never changed: their eternal, undying love for each other. They're perfect together.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/hyperv909/24801.jpg

AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON WHY LORNA DANE IS AWESOME.................

SHE'S HOT.
I'm gay, but I'll admit it. She's hot. I'd tap that. Her boyfriend's hot. She's hot. They're a match made in comic book heaven.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/hyperv909/Polaris/swimsuit92.jpg

Lorna was always so much good fun. I always loved her. I was so sad that through the 80s she just kind of disappeared and was brainwashed all the time. Sucks.

Yeah, I didn't like that when Claremont came on to the title, she and Alex kinda faded to the background until the late 80s. And poor Lorna- she wasn't back on an x-team until X-Factor in 1991 or whatever.

And even though Austen put Lorna through a lot of crap, I'm glad that he at least returned her to the X-Men after another stint in Limbo-land. She's finally back to being an A-Lister!!

Yeah, so far he hasn't really done anything spectacular with her yet. Hopefully Uncanny X-Men 478 will be a good Alex/Lorna issue, what with them on the cover and all.

Oh, and I'm so pysched she's your #2. I'm pretty sure she was my #1. I can't remember if I put Havok or Polaris first though. I think it was Polaris- I forget!

I love Polaris when she's sane. When she's being schizo-ish I could deal without her. But to her credit Austen was the writer during that time. And that damn nurse did keep trying to steal her man:p So I guess it was a deserved craziness

You do??

Tell some good Polaris stories! Do you know why Chris sent her off into obscurity for so long?X-Men (1st Series) #'s 49-52.
X-Factor (1st Series) #'s 71-83 (not much of a story, actually).
Assorted issues of the Thomas/Adams run (also not much of a story, but all the issues she was in).

Now for the "Chris" ones.

Uncanny X-Men #219.
Uncanny X-Men #'s 221-222.
Uncanny X-Men #'s 249-250.
Uncanny X-Men #253-255, 257-258, 269.

I liked Lorna's She-Hulk-like transformation. She was like a parasite. She was a threat to everyone around her, and there was nothing she could do to control it. Uncanny X-Men #475 reminded me of this, when she told Alex that she's too dangerous and shouldn't be around the X-Men. Not that I liked that issue, or anything. Plus, she kicked around the Reavers.

EDIT: Oops! I forgot Uncanny X-Men #'s 145-147 and X-Men (1st Series) #'s 97, 103-104.

I gotta say, while I HATED the way Austen inititally wrote Lorna- angry, sadistic, murderous, and full-blown crazy, I liked how he handled her during The Draco. Her subplot, explaining why she became so crazy, was one of the few good parts of that dreadful storyline.

While he still wrote her pretty loopy-like, she had some good moments. And when Milligan got a hold of her, I was glad that she made lots of quirky, snide comments, even though she was still not the same Lorna we all knew and loved from her X-Factor days. I liked her moment in "Golgotha" when she was questioning her sanity. And the "What Lorna Saw" saw some good Lorna and Alex characterization at last.

So far, Bru has written a pretty decent Alex and Lorna. It's still too early to tell, but I'm hoping he will do something interesting with them, and get them back to their fun-loving days with X-Factor.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm just glad writers are using these two characters again. I may not like how they have been written, but I'm content with them simply being on an x-team. I don't like it when they go into limbo and become background characters.

I agree. Coipel is dreeeeamy. I loved House of M mostly for his fab-tabulous art. Even his Dazzler in big Oprah early-90s suit was cute.

On another note: I WANT A ML LORNA! Hopefully in the classic "Greek" outfit. So dreamy.

I remember I peed my pants when I got my Polaris action figure. I searched far and wide, then on a family reunion, my aunt said "I have this 'Polaris' in the back of my car for you." I loooooved that Polaris figure. She was bangin', even if a Rogue re-paint. I had a good imagination, though. My "Dazzler" was a light-up Psylocke with Gambit's plastic trenchcoat cut at waist-high length for a bomber jacket. ;)

Well, Dazzler got no shelf-time. Although her repaint had the fabulous Black Cat hair and was exclusive classic silver goodness.

I was so mad that the light-up line really had no-one with light up POWERS. Only Gambit and Psylocke. Wolverine, Juggernaut, and Nightcrawler should have been totally replaced for Storm, Dazzler, and Jubilee or something. But ToyBiz hated women figures.

Oh for real. It doesn't even make sense for Wolverine, Juggs, or Nightcrawler to be "light up."

And yeah, I bet they didn't make more female figures because mostly guys buy action figures, and the male ones probably sell better.

Lorna Dane is a great character because she didn't know she was a mutant until well in her adulthood; therefore, she really has no desire to be an X-Man or super-hero. She wants to have a normal life. Ironically, Lorna Dane can never really have a normal life precisely due to her mutant genes. I love Uncanny X-Men #145-147 when Xavier calls Polaris & Havok out of reserve status to rescue the other X-Men from Arcade & Doctor Doom. Lorna, at first, says no, but Xavier tells her she has no choice because all of his other X-Men are held captive.

Alex Summers & Lorna Dane to compliment each other really well.

I just read those preview pages from Uncanny X-Men #478, and it reminded me of the awesomeness that is Jean and Lorna's friendship. Before Storm came along, Jean and Lorna were like best friends. That's why I love it when writers today make references to their friendship from the 60s. I remember Chuck Austen did it during the Bachelorette party, and I love how in Bru's new issue she says that she misses Jean, and how she liked Scott a lot better when she was around.

Like, I know Ororo and Jean are techinically best friends, but Jean is totally Lorna's closest friend out of all the X-Men. In fact, I can't really think of any other x-woman that Lorna is especially close to. I'd say Rahne and Val, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they're best gal pals. Lorna seems to have more guy friends. What a flirt. :o

I'm loving all this Lorna love people are contributing.

And in order to breathe some more life into this amazing thread, I thought I'd share with you all my favorite Lorna comic book cover. It happens to be X-Men #180, pencilled by the talented Salvador Larocca. It's such a pretty cover. Lorna looks beautiful, of course, and if you ignore the shadow of Doop (which ruined a potentially great issue), it truly is a great cover. Lorna is the only gal I know that can pull off green lipstick, and make it work. Enjoy!

Funny you should post that; I bought that very issue today on a whim. Courtesy of the rapid response of the X-posters and memories subsequently enhanced, it seems that Lorna Dane's been part of my X-Men experience from the word "go" some time in the late 1980s. Well, that, and I've had a weakness for a fetching green-haired girl since some time in the early 1990s. Miriya Sterling, please stand up.

I suppose that following her current adventures(?) will involve adding Uncanny to the pull list, won't it? Curse my limited budget!

Damn. Quizilla is down for maintence or something. I wanna see which x-woman I am, dammit!

And no, I'm not overly thrilled with the adjectives next to Lorna's name. "Pleasing" is okay. But what's up with "yearning" and "unsure"? Lorna is one fiesty woman. She knows what she wants, and she goes out there and gets it. Grrrowll!

Oh, and Mr. Suslov: glad to hear your a fellow lovah of all things Lorna. Did you like X-Men #180? For me, it was the best issue out of Pete Milligan's run. I loved when Lorna was like, "Let's pretend to be brother and sister," and Alex makes this disgusted face and says "Ugh, that's peverted!" I loved that scene- it made me laugh. Because Alex said that, makes me think that he hoping to hook up with Lorna on the island. Too bad Doop got in the way and ruined the story. :evilangry

You are Polaris! Like Lorna, you don't know quite in which direction to step or where you ought to go. You are so used to others dominating the situation for you that it is difficult to pioneer your own way. You feel connected to others and yearn to please them, but somehow still feel unappreciated. And I did this in '03, with old skool Lorna who was always getting possessed/being insecure about her body/being part of HavoknPolaris. Trust me. I feel the luv. ;)

Edit: And guess who I got? :p

You are the Dazzler! Loyal and assertive, you are unafraid to set your own boundaries and establish yourself as an individual. The Dazzler is a singer and an actress, so you may also have deep connection to the arts, as well as lofty ambitions of success. You will find most friendship in the cosmopolitan Psylocke, but least interest with Rogue and Polaris.

You know a really long time ago I created a Chris Claremont hates Polaris thread. (It featured her never-ending positions heavily.)

I LOOOOOOOOOOVE her.

And one thing Brubaker did with Lorna was that he singled her out as the MOST powerful person in his cast.

Oh yeah? I definitely think Claremont just didn't know what to do with poor Lorna. She was friggin' Malice forever, and then I didn't like that bulked-up Lorna one bit either.

What other reasons did you have for that argument??

Oh, and yeah, I'm excited to see what Bru does with Lorna.

Lorna Dane was possessed by Malice & lead the Marauders for 3 years (our time). This is not forever. Afterwards, she moved back to Muir Island when Zaladane stole her magnetic powers.

Well for one, I was exaggerating when I said "forever," but still, 3 years is still a long period of time.

And secondly, I guess it was a an interesting subplot for Lorna, but kinda peculiar. Also, it seems like her suddenly having a second mutant power that just happens to be of great use to the Shadow King seems a little too forced. And she looked funny. That hair for one thing. And for another, it was like she was taking steroids! Definitely not a good period for my girl Lorna. :o

Yeah, she did look kinda funny, and that was my only problem with it. But I liked the hair. Word. Yeah, it was so weird seeing this bulked up Lorna kissing this weakened, chained up Alex. What a role reversal! :p

And Mirror Ball Man: I like the new costume very much. It was a very pretty drawing. As for Lorna's other costumes, I actually liked most of them. I wasn't too big on the Shi'ar costume, nor the Malice outfit, but that's about it. I really liked her red and gold bathing suit costume, as well as the blue and yellow one that followed. And I will go on the record and say that I may be the only one who actually really liked her recent purple bat-winged number. I miss it! :o

Nahhh. I like Lorna when she's more down to earth. The last thing she needs is a superiority complex again.

That being said, there definitely needs to be some more Lorna/Magneto interactions. Whether they're related or not, I would like this point to finally be resolved. And if they are in fact, father and daughter, I'd like to see where their relationship stands.

House of M was all about giving characters everything they possibly wanted in the world and Lorna wanted to stand next to Magneto above any and everything.

Oh, and Mr. Suslov: glad to hear your a fellow lovah of all things Lorna. Did you like X-Men #180? For me, it was the best issue out of Pete Milligan's run.
I did enjoy it, although I'm sure it meant more to a dedicated fan than it did to me. After all, it's only been recently that I've been on the path to understanding the X-world. That being said, I'd rather have her as the resident magnetic controller, as opposed to Lensherr. In a choice between green-haired babe or old dude with a murderous bent, er, go with green. :D Besides, this is the girl who threatened to kill Sabretooth for mouthing off to Mister Sinister. Inasmuch as I'm not fond of hairy wild men characters (that goes for you too, Logan) that's a marker in her favor.

I like Polaris, but I HATE all her costumes.
Concur. I figure she ought to have one redone in basic black with green trim that matches her hair, or perhaps change that to something on the order of the Pennsylvania Railroad's 'dark green locomotive enamel'. Highlight with silver or gold in places, and you've got a winner. For what it's worth, I like your design. It strikes me as being better than any of the ones that I've seen at uncannyxmen.net, without question.

Thanks to everyone who voted for Lorna
You're welcome. I figure she deserved the place I gave her in my vote. I just wish she'd broken into the top ten, with the British Psylocke trailing shortly behind.

Let me get one last question in: Is she active in any of the books at the moment? Somewhere I read that she was in Uncanny, but I can't be for sure on that.

Yeah, I kinda wished she beat out Gambit, but I'm psyched she managed to rank higher than Psylocke and Storm, who I had assumed were more popular x-woman. I'm glad I was wrong. ;)

As for your question, yes, Lorna is currently in Uncanny X-Men- she's on the cover of issue #178, with Havok, due out this coming Wednesday. This new arc just started three issues ago with #175, so it shouldn't be that hard to catch up. I definitely recommend it.

Actually, this was when I was first introduced to Lorna as well. I believe it was the spring/summer of '97, right before Operation Zero Tolerance. Lorna had her short green hair, and a great costume I thought. Actually, the picture in my avatar is from that period. Lorna was a lot tougher and short with people, having lots of reservations about being on a team with Sabretooth and Mystique. I don't think she was really happy during this period, because Alex was working with the Brotherhood at this point. She was much happier and carefree when Alex was on the team. But yeah..... GO LORNA!

You forgot Reason #1a--"Lorna Brings the Drama!" Thanks to the "Perils of Ms. Dane" over the decades, Lorna is a high-caliber Drama Queen who could make Jean, Emma, and Rogue blush with envy. Lorna has more soap opera action than a cluster-fuck of Jacqueline Susanne, Jackie Collins, and all combined seasons of Dynasty and Knots Landing!

Oooh, I like. Yeah, she's one of the reasons the X-Men reads like a soap opera. Brainwashing, possession, love triangles, insanity stints, paternity revelations, breakups, makeups, wedding fiascos...... you name it, Lorna's done it.

And I love the Knots Landing reference! I love the repeats on soapnet. :)

10. SHE HAS GREEN HAIR.
Well, that's a plus. Polaris stands in good company alongside Miriya Sterling. :D

7. SHE'S SASSY, FIESTY, AND FUNNY.
Hey, snark gets you places in my book. What's good for the White Queen is also good for the Mistress of Magnetism. If there's going to be a magnetic character in the X-Universe, I'd rather hear Lorna's wisecracks than Magneto's prattling.

6. SHE'S BADASS. DO NOT MESS WITH HER!!
There's no point in liking 'em if they're not able to do something; while the damsel-in-distress is a perfectly valid literary device, it probably gets old for the actual rescuers. Also, anyone who threatens Sabretooth with death scores points in my book.

4. SHE GETS POSSESSED, FINDS LONG-LOST RELATIVES, GOES CRAZY, AND GETS TURNED INTO HORSEMEN OF APOCALYPSE LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS.
I always thought the Horsemen were pretty interesting when I saw them on the old animated series; the fact that she's played ball for Team Apocalypse can be either overlooked or cheered depending upon one's proclivities. Meh, what's insanity or possession when you have green hair without dye?

3. HER COSTUME CHOICES WOULD GIVE JOAN RIVERS A HERNIA.
Aw, I can't agree here. I'm more inclined to agree with whoever said she had some of the worst in the X-Universe, if not all Marvel Comics. Give Mr. Mirrorball's uniform some sleeves and I think she'd be good to go.

2. HER BOYFRIEND IS HOT.
Yeah, that one doesn't exactly do anything for me. "Alex Summers? You're assigned to Airlock Integrity Assurance. No, the fact that 'LYNN MINMEI', 'SCOTT SUMMERS', 'OLIVER QUEEN', and 'JAMES HOWLETT' are all stencilled on the walls of said airlock with a line through each is meaningless. Merely artistic expression. If you hear any sirens, stay put and wait for them to stop." As far as I'm concerned, he's in the way. You can have him. :p

AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON WHY LORNA DANE IS AWESOME.................
SHE'S HOT.
Yeah. That's a factor.

AANNNNNNDDDD.............. we're back. In the spirit of the character threads out there, let's talk about the times we all fell in love with Lorna!!

I'll go first.

Hmmmm, I think I saw that animated episode "Cold Comfort" where Iceman tries to get back with Lorna. I thought she was cool enough, but didn't think much of it. Then I got this X-Men CD-ROM thing that had Giant-Sized X-Men and some issues from the original run, as well as character bios. I enjoyed comparing Lorna's stats with Jean's for some odd reason.

And then I bought X-Factor #132 and became hooked. This is where I fell in love with the Alex/Lorna relationship, but me, still being young, didn't mean that much. I kinda dropped comics for some years, but came back when I saw that Alex and Lorna were getting married! But oh no! She's crazy? And who's that bitch nurse? I've been reading ever since, and have grown to officially realize that I am in love with Alex and Lorna's love for each other.

SHARE!

She has green hair and is so great, it would take me too long to explain why I like Polaris and how great she is.

First time I saw Polaris was about... 11, 10 years ago when Cold Comfort, the Iceman episode from TAS, I thought she was interesting, but she only grew on me when I started reading comics in 2001.

She will be there for October 2008. Can't miss her 40th.

I loved "Cold Comfort" too, but it was more of an Iceman thing than a Polaris thing. Jubilee was my favorite on the cartoon and she had a fun dynamic with Bobby in that episode!

Anyways, Polaris is one of my favorite mutants as well, and that says a lot coming from an Iceman fan. I've always enjoyed her relationship with Havok and think it's cool that Lorna and Alex have never let being X-Men get in the way of doing other things they love as well. I hope Polaris and Havok come racing back to Earth in a blaze of comic book glory soon.

AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON WHY LORNA DANE IS AWESOME.................

SHE'S HOT.
I'm gay, but I'll admit it. She's hot. I'd tap that. Her boyfriend's hot. She's hot. They're a match made in comic book heaven.

Well, what do you guys think? Discuss, debate, relate, do it all. Post good Lorna quotes. Tell fun Lorna stories. Post pretty Lorna pictures. This thread took much longer to make then I anticipated, so you better have enjoyed all my hard work. GO TEAM LORNA!!!

I just read this. You make me happy.

You should join the UXN forum. We could use another Lorna Lover on that forum.

Anyway, I definitely see Lorna as a gay icon. First, about 75% of the people that include Polaris in their top five favorites also include Northstar. She's gay friendly (had Northstar at her bachelorette's party and included him in her wedding). She has multi-colored hair. And she wears purple so perfectly, it's not even funny.

And yet, she still finds a way to attract all of the breeders. Havok, Iceman... Random (who totally just thought she was hot), Ultimate Cyke. And you know Strong Guy had a thing for her during X-Factor (they had such a cute friendship, too).

The number one reason why the OP loves Polaris is because she's hot?
