no, i hated the ending of the movie, because it was done by absolutly different people, and they decided to add a little twist, well that was dumb, because you know that Ed would never go back to the other universe!

Well, there is the movie.
There is also the manga which came first and ends up going in a while different direction. I belive it was that same scenario as Hellsing and Trigun, the anime caught up with the manga ans then did its own story.

Yep. If you want an ongoing story, read the manga!

Well you know that it was mostly because
Someone had to go back through the gate to close it from the otherside so that what happened could never happen again and he was pretty beat up about leaving his brother and winry behind

Well, there is the movie.
...that only aired in a handful of US cities. I find it kinda hard to count something you have to drive to one of the coasts to see.

From what I hear, once you get about halfway through the story covered in the anime, the manga has a different everything. I guess the manga dealt more with the fallout of Maes' murder and because of that things went in another direction.

The Manga has a slightly different group of Sins (Pride in the Anime is Wrath in the Manga for instance), and their leader is someone called "Father," not Dante. Suffice to say, that alone changes the plot significantly from the anime.

I just found out that the movie came out a few weeks ago! I as I was looking up the prices I saw that Walmart has the cheapest but also Suncoast seems to have the directors cut of it and thats the only version of it. Are there 2 versions of the movie?

Isn't the manga still ongoing?
I also didn't care for the FMA movie ending. It's a frustrating conclusion... possibly because I never cared for the whole aspect of these characters suddenly appearing in the "real" world. Once that happened, I immediately began feeling the same sense of irritation that I got when Piers Anthony began regularly dropping "mundanes" into Xanth.
MAJOR SPOILER
To have the movie end with Ed and Al trapped in "our" universe was a total killjoy. For one, it creates a VERY disappointing conclusion to the Ed/Winry romance, such as it was. And really... the whole "someone had to close the gate from this side" is a BS excuse. If the writers wanted Ed and Al to end up home, where they belong (it seemed obvious that Ed never really acclimated to "our" world, then they would have written it that way. I want a HAPPY ending for our heroes, not a bittersweet one. I'm glad Ed and Al end up together again, but I'd be happier if they'd ended up reunited and home. They belong in a world of Alchemy, not one of Science.
Of course, they could win me back with a second movie that has a... "better" ending.
I'm still loving the manga, though. And I'm very glad that the plot has gone on a different track, since it makes it that much more interesting.
For that matter, is the whole premise that the Alchemical Universe is a mirror of the "real" universe incorporated into the manga?

No, in the manga so far, It's strongly hinted that Ed's world was created by a an *very* powerful Alchemist known as Father. Oh, and if you read the manga, you'll be satisfied on how the Ed/Winry romance is progressing:
Winry's already admitted to herself that she's in love with Ed, and when Hawkeye accused Ed of being in love with Winry, he was blushing and sputtering like crazy, and didn't really deny it. Also, Ed currently can't afford to be with Winry since the Homunculi are using her as a bargaining chip to keep Ed under their control
Also, there's the FMA OVA that shows Ed as a grandfather( and his grandchildren look remarkably like Winry and Al, which implies he must have married Winry's "counterpart" at some point).

Agree about the ending, which makes me glad for the manga.
