With all the favorite movie lists lately, I thought it would be interesting to list your favorite MOMENT from any film ever made.
Now the point was going to be to only name ONE moment, but I know that decisions like this are difficult, so just go nuts if you want to. Multiple post with multiple moments are welcome.
With the Star Wars threads popping up, I am reminded of the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, with the Imperial walkers advancing on the Rebel base on the ice planet of Hoth.
Those Walkers may be my earliest memory of Star Wars, and still my favorite. Just the way they moved was awe inspiring (at the time).

I really like the part of Chronicles of Riddick when Riddick first stood up to the Necromongers in the city coliseum and kills the one soldier.
Sword fight between Wesley and Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride.
The whole Marv segment in Sin City. Marv kicked so much ass he deserved his own movie.

To me, that is the permanent definition of all things cool.
Also, when Aidan Quinn steps up and shoots the bad guy in the final moments of "Legends of the Fall." Gives me a lump in my throat everytime.

The part of Superman 2 where the wind whips, the music starts and thier is a re-powered Superman outside the Daily Planet. "General Zod, would you care to step outside?" Now that is bad ass.
I love the end of Casablanca where Claude Reigns looks at the "Viciy" water, take the bottle, toss it in the grabage can and kicks it over. No longer will be be a puppet of a Nazi supporting govt. He's joing Rick to fight the good fight.

In Maurice, when Maurice returns to Pendersleigh Park to tell Clive that he's in love with Scudder, and that Scudder has risked everything to be with him. After he leaves, there's a brief moment where Clive seems to be imagining what might've been, had he been a bit more brave.
Similarly, in Latter Days, when Christian turns around to find Aaron standing in front of him, and drops the tray of dishes.

My Best Friend's Wedding, Roberts and Mulroney are on the boat. She has one last chance to declare herself, and he's waiting to hear it, but she just can't do it, and when they emerge from the bridge's shadow, the moment is gone, forever. Then, at the wedding, when Roberts' character is giving the toast, and the camera goes to M Emmet Walsh, and there's the brief moment where you know, that deep down, he wishes that his son was marrying her, instead.

1st 10 minutes of x-men first movie.
I cannot imagine a better scene for defining magneto or any character for that matter.
Extra points while doing so within a pg rating.
I like a lot of the famous ones that have already been mentioned - e.g. the Statue of Liberty scene in Planet of the Apes - but I want to bring up one that made a deep impression on me and that no one seems to remember whenever I try to talk about it. remember the character in Sonny Chiba's first Streetfighter movie, the guy who was in prison and Sonny/Terry smuggles him out right at the start of the movie? Terry has to fight him and knock him out becuase the guy doesn't know what's going on, and then he somehow sneaks his unconscious body out. Then later on, the guy is sent off to Hong Kong, IIRC, where he wakes up, not having a clue as to what's happened to him - the last thing he remembers is being in prison. Then he's in this sleazy, waterfront dive, full of crooks and assorted dangerous types, slumped at a table with his chin in his hand, obviously totally dazed/confused/discouraged by his inability to understand what the hell is going on (all this is conveyed visually, via body language, which makes it all the more powerful to me, but might perhaps explain why others haven't agreed in the past - I could just be reading it differently from them). Then, as he's sitting there like that, a local gangster leader comes up and tries to get his attention by throwing a punch at him and stopping just short of his head - and the guy doesn't budge. He's so locked into his inner world, the incomprehensibility of his situation has taken such a hold over him that he either doesn't even notice the danger or, as it seemed to me, just doesn't care any more. The expression on his face, his physical posture, etc, etc conveys all this so strongly that it remains the most memorable and powerful moment for me in a movie full of exciting scenes, because what the character is experiencing, when you come right down to it, is just a more concentrated form of the same thing everyone risks experiencing every day: he's been forced to face what most of us spend all our time trying to avoid - the utter incomprehensibility of our own existence, and thus perhaps, by extension, of existence itself. Or at least that's my current explanation of why this scene had such an effect on me that it's driven me to type all this gibberish tonight, more than ten years later.

Bruce Willis rising from the pool of water to kick ass in Unbreakable.
That gives me goosebumps EVERYTIME. Also the scene where he has the killer in the sleeper hold as the music swells always gets me: he finally found his purpose in life.
Also
EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
- "I love you." "I know."
THE TERMINATOR
- Sarah spills her drink and ducks down to pick it up just as the T-800 walks by.
TERMINATOR 2
- "Come with me if you want to live." These were also the first words spoken to her by Reese in the original. The emotional cache carried by that one line made me gasp when I first saw it.
X-MEN
- Logan's PERFECT introduction during the cage fight.
GODFATHER pt 2
- Michael's slow burn before slapping Kate after she tells him she had an abortion.
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND
- The mothership appears from behind Devil's Tower.
TRUE ROMANCE
- The Walken/Hopper exchange.
THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
- Andy's escape.
GOOD WILL HUNTING
- Robin Williams' monologue on the park bench. Takes my breath away everytime.
AMERICAN BEAUTY
- Lester relects upon his life as lays dying. Maybe the most beautifully written piece of cinema ever, IMO.
SUPERMAN
- Clark opens his shirt revealing the S for the first time. Now when my 2.5 yr-old watches it, she squeals with delight.
There's lots more, but I'll stop here.
Here's another one:
remember at the end of Roman Holiday, when Audrey Hepburn sees Gregory Peck in the press gallery and suddenly realises that all along he was just a reporter trying to get a story? And at the same time, she's in the middle of a public appearance where she has to maintain her composure at all costs. The camera is on her face, and the changing expressions on that face tell an entire story in just those few moments, a story of shock, betrayal, sadness, and finally acceptance not only of what's actually happened to her, but of her responsibility, a responsibility that extends far beyond her own personal situation. The character grows from a child to an adult right before your very eyes in just those few instances. In it's own way, it's as cinematically, as poetically effective in conveying a complex, multi-staged, multi-leveled transition, an evolution, in visual terms as is another scene I love: the famous one near the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey, where the proto-humans discover tools and Kubrick makes that daring and devastating visual juxtaposition between the bone-club-instrument smashing other bones and the space-ship breaking earth's gravity-field.

"The Imperial March" scene from Empire Strikes Back, when Vader's super-star destroyer first appears.
The mirror scene from Duck Soup. That always cracks me up, especially when Groucho does the spin around and Harpo just pretends to.
The scene in Life is Beautiful when Guido takes over the loudspeaker and says his favourite line, "Buon giorno, Principessa!" And then later on when he plays the record... I don't want to give too much away, but if you've seen the movie you know what I'm talking about, if you haven't seen it, SEE IT!

The scene in The Manchurian Candidate where Marco (SInatra's character) deprograms Raymond. That is a badass scene. I know I am totally spoiling it, but the movie was made in 1962...
Marco: 52 of them! Take a good look at 'em, Raymond, look at 'em, and while you're looking, listen. This is me, Marco, talking. 52 red queens and me are telling you... you know what we're telling you? It's over! The links, the beautifully conditioned links are smashed. They're smashed as of now because we say so, because we say they are to be smashed. We're busting up the joint, we're tearing out all the wires. We're busting it up so good all the queen's horses and all the queen's men will never put old Raymond back together again. You don't work any more! That's an order. Anybody invites you to a game of solitaire, you tell 'em sorry, buster, the ball game is over.
That and the Marv vs. Kevin in Sin City.
And the very beginning of Citizen Kane where they make a fake newsreel documenting Kane's life. That was a really clever storytelling device, and it really sets the tone for the movie. Very cool.
One more that is super geeky. :)
Colossus changing into his organic steel form for the first time in X2. The theater went nuts when it happened, it was a true geek moment.

I like a lot the ones that had been mentioned so far, here are some of my faves.......
-The end of Dawn of the Dead 2004. I totally did not think Jake Weber was gonna die at the end...but his death made the movie.
-Spock saving Thhe Enterprise from the Genesis Wave at the end of Wrath of Khan.
-When John Vernon says he thinks Josey Wales is in Mexico at the end of The Outlaw Josey Wales.
-The final test flight of Chuck Yeager at the end of The Right Stuff. In fact, the whole is "that a man," speech at the end is the DEFINITION of being a man.
Indiana Jones in the Raiders of the Lost Ark - The whole opening act with the little statue, running from the boulder and the people attacking him all the way to the plane. One of the best openers for a movie ever!
Indiana Jones in the Raiders of the Lost Ark - Shooting the swordsman. I'd heard somewhere that originally they were suppose to fight and Harrison Ford was sick that day of filming so he asked. "Why don't I just shoot him?"
Transformers the Movie - Optimus Prime leaving the ship, transforming and mowing down Decepticons then fighting Megatron.
Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan - Spock's death *sniff*
Star Wars: The look on Obi-Wan's face right before he dies. I don't know why I like it so much. He just seemed so calm and knew what he had to do.
Star Wars: The end sequence with Obi-Wan telling him to use the Force then Luke turning his targeting computer off and them asking him if anything is wrong and he says he's alright. Intense and great stuff there.
Empire Strikes Back - The big reveal from Vader.
Return of the Jedi - Luke doing the flip off the plank and back onto the skiff. I can remember being 9 at the theater and freaking out because I had no idea what he was going to do. I then really wanted to try it on the diving board and the public school. Alas I did not have the Jedi skills to even hang on to the board and just fell into the pool.
Superman - Saving Lois from the helicopter.
Superman II - Music buidup. Stack of newspapers blown over. Streak of red & blue "Would you care to step outside?"
I could probably think of more but those I think are the most memorable for me.
Indiana Jones in the Raiders of the Lost Ark - Shooting the swordsman. I'd heard somewhere that originally they were suppose to fight and Harrison Ford was sick that day of filming so he asked. "Why don't I just shoot him?" Nothing personal, but I've always hated that scene; a not-so-thinly disguised encapsulation of the history of Western colonialism: the white guy with the gun shoots the native guy who has nothing but a primitive sword to defend himself with. The popularity of the scene, the laughs it got in the theatre when I saw the movie when it first came out show exactly how much we've internalised the attitude that we - "the West" - in some sense have the right to intervene in less developed parts of the world, that our higher level of scientific and economic development makes us better than them, morally. Technological superiority interpreted as moral superiority. Might makes right, indeed.

Robocop: Among the many glorious moments in this film, the one when he storms the drug-producing warehouse, and shows Clarence Boddicker the finer points of window diving.
Return of the Jedi: The final confrontation between Luke and Darth Vader, especially when Luke has Vader cornered, and proceeds with the ultimate beatdown on Vader's lightsaber.
Indiana Jones - The Last Crusade:
- "It's Indiana, dad."
- "We named the dog Indiana."
Waiting for Guffman: When the town council denies the acting group a larger budget. "Well I hate you, and I hate your ass-face."

Lots of good ones mentioned here. Here's a little list of some of mine:
1. Klattuu's final speech in The Day The Earth Stood Still.
2. The opera in A Night At The Opera- one of the funniest scenes in movie history, as well as the Stateroom Scene.
3. The Shower scene from Psycho. Still a classic. 40 plus cuts in less than a minute.
4. The Flower Show/Brainwashing scene from Manchurian Canidate- the intersplicing of what the soliders see and what's really happening is absolutely brilliant.
5. The final 15 minutes of Cape Fear- Robert Mitchum is the coolest badass villian. Far superior than the over the top hammy performance of DeNiro.
6. The 2 tracking shots in GoodFellas- Sure everyone knows the Copa shot, but the interior shot where Ray Liotta narrates in introducing everyone is a great shot.
7. King Kong versus the Dinosaur in the 1933 version.
8. "Top of the World, Ma!"- the finale of White Heat.
9. The bank heist in Heat- best gunplay captured on screen.
10. "Anyone got a match?"- Becall's entrance in To Have And Have Not.

The opening shot of Star Wars. I was eight years old at the time, and when I first saw Star Wars, the only seats available in the theater were toward the front. So when the Star Destroyer was pursuing the Rebel transport(in Dolby Sound, no less), and it just kept passing overhead and filling the screen, it was like the damn thing was parking on top of my head! That's when I knew that this would be the coolest movie ever made.
Bruce Wayne confronting the Joker in Tim Burton's Batman. "YOU WANNA GET NUTS? C'MON! LET'S GET NUTS!" If they'd have done more of that, Michael Keaton would have been the ideal Batman!
The concert, and subsequent chase scene, from "Blues Brothers". Plus, purely because it's cool to see nasty things happen to White Supremicists, when Jake Blues drove his car through the Nazi rally. "I hate Illinois Nazis."
When Beatrix Kiddo(the Bride) stalked through Bill's home, and found him in his bedroom, only to also find her long-lost daughter. "I'm 'pervious to bullets, Mommy." Both shocking and surprisingly warm-hearted. For the first time we see the Bride as more than a vengeance seeker.

Yes to these. Many times, yes.
Nobody's Fool: When Paul Newman decks Phillip Seymour Hoffman against the cop car.
Dario Argento's The Card Player: When the corpse, recently dragged from the lake, spurts water into the forensic cops' face.
Harlem Nights: When Veera is thirsty for some orange juice, and she finds out there's only a swallow left in the container. "Dammit, Benny. You got my mouth all ready for some orange juice, and there's only a swallow left in the container."
"Well, swallow it, and shut the fuck up."
NBow that I'm geting all this off my chest, I want to bring up another one: there's a certain moment in Notorious when Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman are, I think, on an airplane to South America; and there's a brief moment when they look into each other's eyes and the viewer suddenly realises they're in love - but it isn't a simple or obvious shot of the two famous stars dreamily gazing into one another's eyes, it's a sequence where you first see the two of them on the plane, then you see Grant's eyes, then Bergman's or maybe vica versa, it's been a long time since I've watchced it. Anyway, the impact is made via the beauty of Bergman, the look in Grant's eyes, a look full of impenetrable depth and sombreness, and not at all the conventional "love-lorn" or "captivated" look movie-wathcers have been educated to expect when they`re seeing two pwoplw in love; and the editing and camera-decisions of Hithcock. Sometimes I think it's the only truly convincing love-scene in film, precisely because Hitchcock had the sense to suggest rather than display; but I'm not sure it could have worked without Bergman and Grant. If anyone`s seen the movie and can`t recal the scene I`m trying to describe, I urge them to watch it again keeping this in mind.

Nothing personal, but I've always hated that scene; a not-so-thinly disguised encapsulation of the history of Western colonialism: the white guy with the gun shoots the native guy who has nothing but a primitive sword to defend himself with.
I've heard that Speilberg regrets shooting that scene, but personally I like it. Thats Indiana Jones act first think later attitude. I also like the scene in Temple of Doom where Indy is facing down two swordsmen, smirks and reaches for his gun only to find its not there.
