Dick Giordano and Joe Kubert also have written pretty good books.
Study the work of Joes Luis Garcia-Lopez. He's amazing. His people are the most natural and un-posed characters you're every likely to come across.
I started out drawing on my own, then smitten with Superman, I began tracing the work of Curt Swan, then trying to emulate what he was drawing, seeing how the lines were arranged to create a sense of space on a flat page. Later, the fluidity of Carmine Infantino's work, in the 80's really got my attention, and was another great influence. I guess what I'm going for here, is take an artist you ( or your brother) like, study how they do what they do, and figure out what makes their illustration successful. Let their work be a road map. Don't worry about your own style right now, that'll come with practice, just focus on accurate representations, and the creation of depth.
