Hello. Welcome to the Runway! As you know, in fashion, one day you're in and the next you're out.

After many weeks of rigorous design challenges there are now only two of you. After this week there will be only one.

PLEASE VOTE for the designer whose line you feel best completes the challenge, taking into consideration overall performance during this season of Project CBRunway. Voting should not be based solely on art ability. Ultimately, however, voting is completely subjective. Participants may vote for themselves. The designer with the least amount of votes will be eliminated.

The winning designer will walk away with an exciting prize pack, including Project Runway -- The Complete Second Season (DVD), How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way (Paperback), and an assortment of professional artist supplies!

CHALLENGE 6: CBR FASHION WEEK
Your challenge for CBR Fashion Week is to design a five-piece line for the Mighty Avengers: Wasp, Giant-Man, Thor, Hawkeye, and Scarlet Witch. Each piece of your line should reflect the individualitiy of the character for whom you are designing, however the entire line should show a definite cohesion, clearly showing these characters as part of a team. Designers had the option of adding a sixth wildcard Avenger to their line.

Please vote using the poll, then feel free to make comments or ask questions about this challenge or these designs within this thread.

Let's start the show.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present my 2006 Avengers Collection.

The challenge as stated was to create a five-piece line for the Avengers featuring the characters Hawkeye, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Giant Man, and Wasp. Each costume was to reflect not only the character but also their unity as a team.

Before I present the designs I'd like to talk a little bit about what I was going for in this collection.

Team unity was the first aspect of the challenge that I deliberated. I quickly decided against belts or jackets. I wanted something a little subtler. What I decided on was this:

Each Avenger should have a costume that mixes black with one other color. Colors should not be repeated. I chose Red, Purple, Yellow, Blue and Green. I definitely didn't want any orange. The only two colors I felt were locked in were Red for the Scarlet Witch and Purple for Hawkeye. I made my decision on the other colors with what I felt worked best with each costume or with each personality.

There should be an element of assymetry to each costume.

As much as possible, each costume should reflect the same design sense- even when playing homage to other design styles.

Having decided on how I wanted to show team unity I had to find my way into the team. It was an interesting grouping of characters. I tried various and sundry schemes to form them into a team, but none of them really excited me. And then, a weird moment of synchronicity! I was processing holds at work and someone had requested the Fight CLub DVD. I was looking at the insert book and I saw a pciture of Brad Pitt leaning on a counter and BAM! I had my way in. When I present the designs I'll explain how I see the character as part of my team.

Once I started designing I realized I wanted to not only design a collection, I also wanted to homage some of the design styles that have influenced me over the years. I'll also be explaining my influences as I go along.

Matt offered us the chance to have a sixth Avenger as a wild card. I opted not to add a sixth Avenger. I started to try last night, but the stuff I was coming up with didn't add anything to the Collection.

I'd just like to thank everyone who voted for me in the Challenges so far. I am totally thrilled to be part of the Final Three and I had a ton of fun coming up with this stuff!

Hawkeye

Hawkeye is the leader and driving force of my team. His recent experiences during the Disassembled storyline and the House of M storyline have burnt him out. After taking off from the Avengers, Clint scraped around doing some mercenary work. A chance encounter with Thor in a bar- and about eight hours of discussion on what it means to be a warrior and an Avenger- inspired Hawkeye to for his own team of Avengers.

Hawkeye doesn't have a costume as much as he has a distinctive personal style. I wanted to reflect his frustration with the traditional superhero life while still retaining his familiar purple theme. I decided on an assymetrical shirt in black and purple pattern and purple pants. I wanted the design to be sleek, but also playful and sexy. He's pretty much completely influenced by Brad Pitt in Fight Club.

With this design I wanted to use a more fluid, animated style. The lines are simple and a little playful. I've really been influenced by the design style of certain manga artists and I wanted to give a little wink to that.

I actually gave some thought to the backgrounds as well. But I'll explain that in full when we get to the Wasp.

There WAS a bowstring in the original drawing. It disappeared somehow in the coloring process and I couldn't get it back without messing up four other things. So please pretend it is a really thin bowstring designed by Reed Richards or something. :)

Thor

Thor was surprised to find Hawkeye in a somewhat seedy bar. He listened to Hawkeye's tale of woe and, quite frankly, didn't have a lot of sympathy. Thor is a Warrior God. Warrior Gods know there is always good and bad in being a warrior and they accept it and revel in it. Thor spent the last several months traveling around Scandanavia. He wanted to get back in touch with the people who used to worship him. He drank, partied and brawled his way around several countries. He fell in with some death metal afficianados and cut his hair and grew a beard. He wined and dined more women than he can remember. He even had a somewhat interesting night with Hela. Thor has really been God-ding it up. But that changed when he discovered a Thor cult that was practicing a form of murder sacrifice. Thor had to decide between the ways of old and the morality of today. Once he dispatched the cult he headed back to the States to see what was going on. Running into Hawkeye was a happy coincidence. When Hawkeye asked Thor to join his new Avengers, Thor was only too happy to join. He brings a long-term persepctive and a warrior's zeal to the team.

I call Thor's costume my Heavy Metal Kirby design. All black with blue Kirby-esque design patterns. The collar is assymetrical and, even though it doesn't look like it from this angle, so is the shirt. I think this costume reflects where I'd like to see Thor go- serious warrior with a sense of fun.

This was my favorite design to do. I laughed out loud a couple of times while drawing it. It has so much energy for me and is so fun!

Giant Man

When Thor and Hawkeye were looking for new members they debated Hank Pym. He wasn't their first choice, but most of their first choices were deeply involved in other things. They went to see Hank and ask him if he wanted to join as Yellowjacket. Pym insisted that, if he were to join, he wanted to join as Giant Man. Thor and Hawkeye reluctantly agreed, but they're keeping their eye on the somewhat unstable Pym.

Hank Pym, to me, has always been the guy who tries hard but somehow always messes up. He never seems to quite fit. I think he's very eager, but that his passions get the best of him. He's once again looking to prove himself, and, as always, he's sure that this time he'll get it right.

The color I chose for Hank was green- the color of envy. I think there's a lot of envy in Hank, a lot of longing to be more like the heroes around him.

With his costume I wanted to pay homage to Keith Giffen's early 80s design sense. Hence the bodysuit with cutaway bits and the like. I wanted the costume to visually represent Giant Man's powers. It's a long design, and the areas of skin give it a feel of being pulled apart by Hank's expansion. I wanted the green to have a heavy, metallic feel.

Edited to add: One of the things I was trying for in this design was to represent the problem Hank has fitting in with the other Avengers. He tries hard, but he's always a bit out of step. So with his costume I wanted that feeling of trying hard but not quite fitting in. It's not supposed to be the best design of the bunch. It's supposed to show how far Hank has to go to reach the state he wants to be. But it's also very gung ho, very daring. So you've got Hank's eagerness and his awkwardness all in one.

This was the design I had the most trouble with. I went through nearly 10 versions of it before I hit on the final design.

http://alyxchance.com/cbrfinal/waspfinal.jpg

Wasp

When Jan found out that Hank was part of Hawkeye's Avengers she was eager to join as well. She'd become somewhat bored with the things she'd been doing and wanted to do some adventuring again. She also wanted to keep an eye on Hank and make sure he didn't fly off the deep end...again.

With the Wasp I wanted to design a costume reminiscent of 80s fashion. The dress/tunic has a kinda Japanese feel. I added the black cloth to bring out the assymetrical design I wanted all the looks to have. The leggings have a Keith Haring-esque patterning on them. I think this design captures the fashionista stylings of the Wasp.

I said I was going to talk about the backgrounds, didn't I? The backgrounds were all made using the Clouds filter in photoshop. I really like the look of it and I think it makes for a fun background. With the other four designs I used black adn the dominant color of the design. This led to darker backgrounds- which fit with the characters. With the Wasp I broke from that. I wanted a lighter feel to the Wasp. She's a much more well-adjusted character and has a purer joy for life than the others. So her costume was bright yellow and her background is the lovely blue and white of a nice spring day.

http://alyxchance.com/cbrfinal/scarletwitchfinal.jpg

The Scarlet Witch

The only problem I had with Wanda was getting her on the team. She's off playing Gypsy in Europe and supposedly doesn't have any powers. But she's got to have kept something- if only to protect her simple Gypsy life from the perils of the real world. Eventually, however, there will be some threat that will force her to take up her powers and her identity again. I'll call that threat Loki.

Wanda is the teammate that nobody trusts. She could go nuts at any moment and wipe them all out. But they'll take the chance to keep an eye on her.

The Scarlet Witch design was the first I did. I knew what I didn't want- I didn't want Stevie Nicks Wanda. No Gypsy bangles and spangles and hoops and baubles. I could have gone that way. God knows I've drawn stuff like that before. But I didn't want that look. I wanted something sleek and simple. I wanted something that looked a little sinister but very sexy without being revealing. Wanda is constantly bruised by the world. She's going to want as much between her and the world as she can get. So I went with more of a Byrne design than a Perez design.

Black and red were the obvious combination. And I am one for not resisting the obvious without reason. I wanted a red jacket over a black bodysuit. All I had to do was find the right design for the jacket. And a moment of pure accident came up with the cut of the jacket. My pencil slipped and the jacket fastened under her boob instead of in the center of the jacket. And that opened up everything. I had my design scheme all at once.

This was the easiest of the designs for me. And it's the design that is most like what was in my head. I love the red and black and I love the flow of the jacket.

Hey- i finally finished!! (i had a bit of a late start..)

Anyways, i don't have much to say about this line. I thought about other teams i know with "team costumes", and groups like The X-men, Fantastic Four, Doom Patrol, etc. came to mind. I thought most of these groups were rockin' the two-color thing, and so i decided to give the Avengers a two-color motif. Most of these characters have had costumes that were prodominantly blue/black, or red/red-ish color... :o .... so that's what i went with. I also thought about the "modern" style team uniform- like The Ultimate Groups, The X-Men movie,.. and how they're less super-hero-y, and more street clothes-ish. So i decided to go for the look of certain fabrics and designs with the line.

And my little "Avengers" nod, is that on each costume, the bottom half of a capital "A" is seen making up the neckline of the suit, with the top half wrapping around to the back/back of the neck. In Hawkeye and Wanda's cases, the tip stretches ALL the way down to make a cape/loin-cloth/coat thingy.

I guess that's it- i tried to use this formula on each character, but to incorporate elements from their traditional costumes.

Here they are!

I was going to include a sixth, and i was debating between Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man... but to be honest, i'm just plain tired.

This whole contest was a blast to do! I'm really glad it got off the ground and retained its popularity. :D

EDIT: (Holy crap, that group shot is small! Wow.)

I already commented on Atoning's in the other thread, so I'll just give my thoughts on Veg's.

Actually Veg's designs are pretty similar to what I had in mind myself if I had time to do the play along, right down the the ultimate style ribbing down the sides. And while Atoning's is nicely done also, Veg's just screams to me superhero team. So my vote goes with VG.

While I love your Hawkeye, it is the weakest of your set. It seems to be missing something - maybe it's just the absence of the quiver and bow. But I love the sash and the two-toned mask, and pretty much the overall design.

The only thing I wasn't crazy about with Giant Man was the mask. Everything else looks great.

Wasp is perfect. She looks playful and fun, and hip. Kudos.

Scarlet Witch is also very nicely done. My only criticism is the new design, while perfectly fitting, reminds me a bit of that Top Cow character whose name eludes me at present. Oh, what was her name? Anyway, aside from that I love it.

And finally, Thor is great as well. The modernized version of his classic look works great, and it doesn't look too much like Thunderstrike, which is a good thing.

I love the color scheme. Kind of reminds me of X-Treme X-Men a bit. And I LOVE that group shot. Great job this round.

Ahh! So much deliciousness! On atonings, I love the style, the use of unique color for each character, and the women (Wasp and especially Wanda) are just fabulous. But I do have to say I find the men just a little too -- femme. Cut-offs and exposed bellies and all. Unique and fun overall, but it just misses the mark of what I'm looking for when we're doing a whole team of Avengers.

Veggie. Love you. And I also love your women, for different reasons. Wasp's wisp of hair is cute, and I love your eclectic-gypsy Wanda. But with Hawkeye and Giant Man, it just falls. flat. There's nothing overall unique or compelling about the outfits, and I feel that even with the uniform color scheme you could do a little more to make them more stand-out and individual.

Veg pulls away with making the whole set a little more cohesive, like gonzo said. Might be a little biased on my part, but SUPERB work by both!

Ok, I really liked the two set of teams, and the best thing is that both are totally fiferent from each other.

Atoning, the designs are cool, especially Thor's and Wanda's. In fact, your Scarlet Witch is perfect!! Her outfit is something she'd definetly wear! I can't say the same about your Hawkeye and your Giant Man. I think that my biggest problem with your group is that, despite the creative uniforms, they just don't scream super-heroes costumes, and that's something the Avengers should be known by, in my opinion.

That's why my vote goes to Veggie. His group definetly looks like a super-hero group. And although his Giant-Man does nothing for me, I really liked his Hawkeye and his Thor. And little Wasp looks so Wasp in that!! Plus, the similar outfits gave them a little plus.

Anyway, fantastic work by both of you. Congrats for making to the finals!

Wonderful designs by both, first of all.

I have to say that Atoning, I would kill to put your Wasp's costume into print on comic book pages. That is inspired! Your women and your Hawkeye are all very creative and well executed. I have to go with Novaya in saying that Giant Man and Thor don't do much for me, they have got like a gay nightclub vibe going on. Meanwhile, I think your overall style and idea was fabulous.

Veeg, I think you did an excellent job in keeping the team vibe going. The outfits are very uniform while being unique to the character which is what this challenge is about. The look and colors feel very Avengers to me for some reason. Wanda and Thor knock it out of the park on this one. Giant Man didn't do much for me, but I haven't got any real complaint there. I can imagine these designs being picked up by Marvel. Well done. You get my vote.

Excellent work to both designers. :)

I loved the costumes, with the whole movie sort of style costumes. they looked like what could be used in a avengers movie. with atoning...no offence but some of dem looked really gay (like literally) *cough*giant man. But yo i voted for veg..just straight killed it for me, specially hawkeye and giant man

I'll give my opinions per design and as team:

Hawkeye: I like Dan's version best, because it has the little wings on the mask and the arm protection.
Giant-Man: Definitely Dan's version. I like it the best of all of his designs in this entry, while I found atoning's version his weakest.
Wasp:Tough one, I liked both designs, but in the end I went with atoning's version because I like the yellow/black colour scheme for Wasp. (I'm shallow).
Scarlet Witch: Definitely atoning's, his best design this entry. Veggie's isn't bad, but it reminds me of Top Cow's Magdalena. Edit: and his Scarlet Witch seems to have the least scarlet/red of all his costumes. (again, I'm shallow)
Thor: Another tough one: both are very good designs and both seem to be inspired by Ultimate Thor, but in the end I like the bare arms look better for Thor.
The team: While Dan's Avengers look more like a classic superhero team, I like atoning's choice to use individual colours for each member a bit more, making them more individual, while still having a team-spirit.

So design-wise a tie, but atoning gets a bonus point for his long descriptions of each character.

I'd just like to say I love both sets of teams. But I can only choose one, so I'd have to choose Veggie's.

I definitely like atoning's idea to give each character a mix of black and their classic color, while using asymmetry. Unfortunately, I didn't think that this was enough to link them all together as one team.

With Veggie's, I like how a similiar design pattern and idea was used with each character, especially the "A" at the top of each costume. I myself was planning this style for my designs. And I really think the common colors, while each design was reminiscent of the character's old costume, made them all look like a team. Despite my thoughts that each character should retain some of their classic colors, like in atoning's, I felt that this connection between each costume was exceptional.

So all in all, I felt Veggie captured each individual's personalities and classic appearance, while still making them all appear as a team.
Yet, I definitely loved the background on each character by atoning, and I think he deserves extra just for that!

Technically atoning's designs are really good but I don't like the style he went for. With the exception of Wasp, I think all the character designs look good together and still work for the characters when they aren't with the team.

VG's team looks like it belongs together, but the other four look like their costumes were designed just to match Giant Man's. I think that a character's look should still work for them if they're not with the team, and other than Giant Man they don't.

Honestly, I was really underwhelmed this week. Atoning's designs work better on the team and solo levels, but VG's look better overall and his Giant Man is the only character that I really liked. So, I voted for VG. I'm glad that the voting isn't so close, becasue really I don't feel strongly enough about either to ok with my vote picking the winner.

And if that came off as dickish, I apologize.

For me, it was the nuances of Dan's designs. The coloring was top notch; it looks like real leather, which is cool because leather plays so strangely in the light. Hawkeye's face stole that one for me. So disgruntled, so irked.

Giant Man's goggles. Why does no one like that?! I love those goggles so much, they're so hot and amazing and fricken' gorgeous! And the lines and that chemical symbol looking pattern really put this one in the bag as well.

The stockings stole Wasp for me. Then the cute pixie wings (so pretty to look at!), and finally that. wisp. of. hair. So cute! Jan is kind of rugged in Ultimates and since I came into comics after Disassembled, I've had little to no interaction with her at all. Wikipedia tells me that her and Hank just have had a horrible past, so this really shows me a cute something that I'd be interested in.

Scarlet Witch. The eyes, the hair, and the fluid pose. It's such a powerful pose. I can feel that pose! My poses are always stoic, hands at the side, finger flaying about, but this is just so powerful! And the outfit just looks right. It's weird, showing a leg and covering another, but it's just so perfect. The gypsy belt is a hot touch, too!

Thor was a little wonky for the corset looking thing, but I love the scruffyness and am definitely scared of that huge as hell hammer. And you know he's going to say, "FORSOOTH?!" lolol!

Overall AMAZING jobs to both of you. I wanted to try something nice for the Play Along at Home thread, but it was just too hard! You have to be able to draw different faces (lol my weak spot!) and do quirky and fun yet COMPLETE things...and that was too much for me.

I liked Atoning's mental design process in his designs - you could see it working with the elements he placed throughout the 5 designs. That said, I felt that while his Thor was a nice design, it felt too covered up and loose for the character. Ironically, while I didn't like his Giant Man for the character because it felt too homoerotic, I did like the costume as a design except for the way the assymetric detail resolved - I felt that was tacked on just to fit in with the rest. I liked his Wanda the best. I did a similar design for Karma back in the mid 80s and I had so much trouble resolving the other view - the part where the surplice wrap extends over the side. I drew atoning's costume from that view just to see how it would resolve, and while it's the strongest design of the lot for me, it might look off from another side.

Veggie Goat's men are great. His Hawkeye is my fave, and I love how there's a nod to his original costume. His Giant Man is sleek too and the hood reminds me of The Tin Man, which is a great reference for a giant. His Thor feels very much like Thor, but it works well within the context of the designs. The women, however, didn't work for me at all. Too many tricksy details for my liking. But in the end, I liked more of Veggie Goat's designs, so my vote went to him.

Atoningunifex, I love the color-coding of the team members. Scarlet Witch was by far, my favorite. I liked Thor also though. I like the Wasp's new costume but I'm not to sure about the leggings.

Vegetarian Goat, Love Hawkeye and Thor's new looks. Scarlet Witch here looks absolutely amazing!!! I love the more gypsy look to it.

It's going to be a tough decision. But I'd just like to say that I've enjoyed this competition whole-heartedly (sp?) I loved all of the designers' entries. And I really wish that okie could have made it in. Good Luck next time to all!

I am prolly biased, but I think the "sexy" approach to the males in Atoning's version is nice. If female superheroes get to dress like prostitutes, then dammit! So do the males!

Sure, girls (and gay boys) aren't the target demographic for most comics, but we still could use a little understated eye-candy.

What do we have? We have Gambit! And they TRIED to make him ugly so that he'd be LESS sexy* (Perm, hot pink suit etc...) So um... Yeah I'm really enjoying this entry. <3

My God, you guys did an amazing job! Atoning, your colors are beautiful, and I love your designs! (Your Invisible Woman is one of my favorites of this entire competition!) But I've been a fan of Dan's for over a year now. His stuff has been my wallpaper on and off for quite some time, and that Giant Man is just too cool for school.

And congrats to all who participated.
A big cheer for the terribly organized Mister Bibbles. Great, great stuff.

I have enjoyed both of your work in the contest. In this final round, I voted for Goat. Thought they looked more hero-style of the two lines, and enjoyed the Wasp and Thor outfits the most.

About 40 hours of voting to go before we "officially" announce the winning designer.

I was wondering when the official announcement was going to come. I thought it would be Wednesday as usual, but I see I was wrong. :)

Hello. Welcome to the Runway! As you know, in fashion, one day you're in and the next you're out.

There are two of you left on the Runway. After today there will be only one.

atoningunifex, your designs were original and fun. Voters liked your use of color, but not everyone thought it was enough to evoke team unity, nor did they feel all the designs were "superhero" enough for the Avengers.

Vegetarian Goat, voters thought your designs definitely evoked "superhero". They loved the strong team concept and that you also respected charcters' individuality. However voters throught some designs were uninspired and boring.

Congratulations, Vegetarian Goat, you are the winner of Project CBRunway.

That means, atoningunifex, you are out.

Auf wiedersehen.
