Hi!
Okay, maybe I can never be JadeDragon, haha, but I'd love to share with you all some of my lastest works. I may have posted a picture here before, but I thought I'd just make one thread, as that's how I like to see everyone's work here at NEF.
Just a brief snippet about me: Although I'm an artist at heart, I used to work for Hasbro Toys as a photographer for eight years. I'm taking a big leap with a self-published project next year called LADY ICE. I've also done one Jenny Everywhere webcomic, and I am working on a new web series with a fellow CBRer .... and I'm still in progress with working on a book for an indie publisher.
Please feel free to comment or critique on anything you see here. That's what we are all here for, right?
Thanks so much! :)
... And I better see Jesus Antonio drop in here!

I also wanted to add today one I get comments on alot, and recently helped me get a commission client, who has asked me to do several Masters of the Universe characters. This appeared in the Titans Tower Swimsuit Issue in 2003.

BUt I'd be remiss not to include one of a character I draw alot of, Gar Logan (Beast Boy/Changeling). This was for a contest on www.garfieldlogan.com A pro writer started a conversation with me at the Baltimore Con after seeing this as my sample cover sheet.

Watched the Justice League Ultimatum episode last night, and really like Longshadow (based on Apache Chief of the old SuperFriends show). So I started drawing him and here's where my pencils are currently. I'll do inks later.

Ha! I like the Hellboy Vs. Popeye.
Great stuff Scott! I remember that Beast boy from a while ago, it still looks awesome- its a perfect choice for your portfolio cover.
Its annoying when people don't post on threads like this. Kind of rude, really. Kudos to the two that did.
As you said, you may not be JadeDragon, but its a different genre, different style altogether. Don't put yourself down, because I'd kill to be able to do what you can do. The clean lines are appealing, you've got a great sense of shadow and perception. If you like, I could critique specific works, but I thought I'd keep my comment general out of respect.
Keep going at it. I'd like to see more of your stuff.

i-mmmchocolate: Thanks! That Hellboy/Popeye piece was done with intent for the San Diego Comic-Con Program. But work at the photo studio was crazy with weddings and sports, I misremembered the deadline and so I didn't get it in on time. Still, I've been showing it around, it's part of my portfolio, and recently at Mid-Ohio I actually had Sergio Aragones sign the empty space on the Bristol board below it.
13th: So good to see you here! And thank you! I'll try to throw some more Titans stuff in here as a I go on. I am putting some new submission packets together, as I am looking for more comics work. If there is anything in particular you'd like to see in this thread, any character requests, just let me know! You are one of my favorite posters here.
Leo: Thanks so much! I have to say at least 20 views on this thread were me trying to rework the image to embed into the thread itself. I am definitely here to show my work and I am looking for comments, so please feel free to share. As far as JadeDragon goes, I'm not putting myself down, I have just been blown away with his stuff... and I don't think I'll be able to post even close to each day, for awhile at least, until I get my current work situation eased out and catch up with my indie book project.

That goes to show me for using myself as a model!!!
Darn two left feet! :)
Thanks Howy, for the note. I guess I got sloppy with the back foot's point there. Maybe I can go in and alter that abit in the digital version so I'll have a better copy around.

I have finished the inks on the "blood-splatter" page, but I don't have it copied down to share yet.
Instead, here is a fun image I did Monday night. It's a character sketch for the upcoming comic WaNaBeZ. A few of you may have heard this title mentioned by the keyboard of our very own Brant Fowler (gonzogoose). It's his creation, and if timing works well, the strip will debut in February online. I was going for a loose, gestural, fun feel to the drawing and pose.

An older image, but just for fun, I thought I'd add it here.
I LOVE the Doom Patrol (especially the Morrison and Case run) and always wanted action figures of them. DC Direct has yet to do them.
Well, after a good friend of mine at Hasbro introduced the NAK NAK figures, I discovered a fun hobby of creating artwork to make my own crazy-looking little Doom Patrol "action figures".
I started buying Nak Naks left and right (I got an employee discount at Hasbro--I still have packs all over), and began making DP figs. These are a few of the first ones! Rebis is everyone's favorite figure. Here he is with Cliff and Crazy Jane.
I create the artwork completely in Photoshop and then place the prints on sticky paper, then cut them out and carefully place them on the front and backs of each Nak.
After I get my current situation meted out, I plan on returning to this project for myself next year. I will be making a special section on my website for the pictures (which I took as well) of these customized Nak Naks.

Thanks everybody!
I am teaching both Photoshop (this month) and Illustrator (next month) at the Art Institute of Ohio-Cincinnati.
There will be at least one project I will also do myself. This month, I had taken 145 pictures of metal objects and asked my students to create photo-realistic robots out of them. Some of them turned out really awesome.
I finished mine today before class, and I'll post it here, at the latest tomorrow.

Here is the robot image I created out of parts of some of the 145 images I shot of metal. Man, I love Photoshop so much. I came up with the idea for the assignment for my class when I got hired, shot the images last Wednesday and put together this image Sunday night. I felt I wouldn't assign them anything I wasn't willing to do myself. I think the assignments should be fun.
I enjoyed creating this so much, I've incorporated the design into one of my future projects. Feedback is appreciated always. Thanks!

For those of you who enjoyed my Doom Patrol Nak Naks, here is how they are currently displayed... atop a bookshelf in my comics closet (large walk-in closet that is part of my home studio/office.
They are posed about on a Fisher-Price Imagine Next playset I organized to fit on top of the shelf. My intention is to repaint and sticker the set in order to create a custom.... you got it... Danny the Street. I simply need to find time and resources for that project.... but I hope to do that this summer at least.
Scattered around on the playset are of course, my funky Photoshop art renditions of Cliff Steele (2 versions), Rebis, Crazy Jane (3 versions), Red Jack, Rhea, Agent "!", and a Scissorman. Hope to add more when I find time.... and that's what the Nak bodies atop the left part of the building are for. I surely want my next waves to be Chief, Gar, Brain, Mallah, Madame Rouge, Animal-Vegetable-Man, Candlemaker, Rita, and Mr. Nobody.

Hehehehe!!! My new teaching job has given me even more incentive to experiment and go crazy!
The robot was fun...and now I found myself immersed in another of my projects I assigned. Jodie, the daytime teacher (who loved my robot idea), suggested an idea of product concept. For my class, I assigned them to do an image for a "presentation to the board of their company" that consisted of a product, its packaging, and a logo... all in a style that looks like an advertisement you might see in a magazine. I told them to create the image using a mix of digital artwork and photos.
One of my students asked if I would be showing an example in class of what I was looking for. I said "yes". Little did I know, 24 hours later, I'd be having fun on my computer for an hour and a half creating my own product and using almost all my favorite Photoshop tricks.
I saved 36 images as I went along to show them step by step what I did. If anyone is interested in seeing those steps, just let me know. I will be showing them tomorrow in class.
Anyway, I used a "special" tennis ball as my product... which inspired the pun part of my brain to make up catchy phrases to get the attention of the "consumer".
Everything except the background is completely created in the computer.
Here is the final result.

Played around in Adobe Illustrator again today. Started one of a series of my own superheroes in animated style... in preparation for a small Flash project for my website, as well as an eventual 3-D animation project with Animation Master that can serve as a promo piece for my book.
Anyway, I am so excited about some of the projects I have planned for next month's Adobe Illustrator class. The night teacher and I bounced great ideas off each other. Hopefully the students will share our enthusiasm. It's great to see what variety these students can come up with based on the assignments. I try to give them stuff I'd like to do to make it more fun for all of us. I will be doing a few of the projects myself for samples, and when I do, I will share them here!

Illustrator class started this week, and I'm teaching the basics of the program right now.
I create the projects for the class, so I don't assign any projects I wouldn't love to do myself. So I do the projects too when I find time, preferably to serve as samples for the class.
The first project was an art design for a skateboard or a surfboard, and the second was a cartoon or other non-realistic self-portrait for possible logo, letterhead, webpage, and invoice purposes.
Here's my portrait, nearly done (just two small bits to change).
Hope you like it.

Hey dude I really love your work, its got a gritty edge that I like. In fact Im putting a together a project of my own, I am going to send a sample of my work to someone tommorrow. But I like your work, and might be willing to pay/let you share in the creation aspect of it, sort of be like co-creater. But I have one question, can you do battle scenes real well. Im not just talking about two guys throwing energy at each other, Im talking about guys that switch from shooting plasma cannon's, rockets, and lasers at each other, to Meele weapons like swords, axes, and energy lances, on the fly. Do have anything like that in your portfolio?

Hi everyone,
I had a thread about a year ago that got buried, and thought I'd start a fresh one up to fill with some work from 2006.
A little bit about me is that I'm a hopeless comics and computer junkie, who above all loves to draw, mess with Photoshop, take pictures, teach students, and have fun with my beautiful fiancee. I've published some mini-comics, done some comics for the web, and am working a couple of books for independent writers.
I'll start off the thread with some favorite pieces of mine, and eventually start posting some images as I get new ones done in 2006.
Comments and critique are always welcome.
Thanks,
Scott D.M. Simmons

Not your fault. There are sooo many great artists and writers in this forum. Its easy for a thread to get "lost". And some of us (like me) are guilty of only coming into this forum when we have stuff of our own to post. Then we check out everyone else's stuff. I bet some of us (like me) do that all the time. ; )

Thanks! Ozzy is a great strip at GCJ and all of us at the site are currently discussing making an Ozzy animated film together.
But I also have my very own "funny animals" called DEKE and VINNIE. They started out WAY back in animation class... and eventually wound up as an 8-page story submissions package for the Small Press Expo Anthology. Since it didn't get in, the story became part of a mini-comic I handed out at conventions. I'm working on a few other stories about them.... especially the one I originally planned as a cartoon.

Ah... I see. Thanks. The character name is familiar, but I know next to nothing about her. Really, I've only recently regained my interest in comics. I was strictly Superman when I was a kid, but I started into Batman recently. It's kind of embarrassing to admit, but my "knowledge" of the Titans comes almost solely from my neice's interest in the Teen Titan cartoon...

That's cool. One of the things that got me into comics in the first place was the old SUPERFRIENDS TV show, which was new when I was a kid. My favorite was the season of Challenge of the SuperFriends (with the Legion of Doom). The recent Superman and Justice League cartoons brought back that same feeling, yet with more depth and excitement for me.
I'm not sure how I really feel about the Titans show, it's run both hot and cold for me depending on the episode. However, I have a big interest in the characters, and in fact, have done several drawings of Gar (Beast Boy) for website contests. (Note to anyone: I am starting to take on commission work, so I would welcome anyone who wanted some Titans stuff.)

This year I very special thing happened that I decided to do artwork for... my wedding. All of this was done using Illustrator. I also created art for the RSVP cards. In addition, I also created pages on my wesbite to give information about the wedding before it happened and afterwards, to show images from the wedding.

The table cards (using themes from our first two dates, different ones for boys, girls, women, and men):

Cool,it looks like your channeling a bit of Rick Leonardi on the face of the Superman drawing. You have a nice underground look to your work, the bold linework looks great in black and white.
