View Full Version : Three Matches that define wrestling

A non wrestling friend of mine asked to show her one match that would make her understand and appreciate wrestling. I argued that one match could never really encapsulate the sport, so we haggled the three.
Sunday the challenge is on. I need to dig in my massive video collection for three matches to show. I'm pretty sure about one match, but open to any suggestions.
If you could only pick three, which three would you pick?

Thats a pretty tall order, but whatever the other two would be, one has to be Hogan/Andre at Wrestlemania 3. It was, literally, the biggest match in wrestling history.

I'm pretty deadset on Angle/HBK at Mania 21. That was the best wrestling match I've ever seen, just two men going at eachother.
The thing with Hogan/Andre is that to a non-fan, it's mainly two big men pushing eachother around for 20 min. She will have no grasp of the implications it has.
I'd love to have a Flair match... but I can't think of which it should be. And probbaly some weapons match... maybe a TLC. Hmmmm

I can think of two:
Brett Hart vs. The British Bulldog in Wembley Stadium (I think it was a Summer-Slam)
The first ladder match for the IC title between Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels
Athena Bast
08-25-2006, 02:53 PM
The first major PPV TLC match.. I think it was a TLC of The Hardyz vs The Dudleys.

Angle/HBK was a damned fine match.
My favorite match ever was the Flair vs. Terry Funk I Quit match. So I always recommend that one. Maybe it would be a good idea to throw a shorter, faster-paced match in there. There are number of matches that fit that bill on the Rey Mysterio DVD, like his Smackdown debut vs. Chavo Guerrero. It's not Rey's best match, but it is a different style than Angle/HBK or Flair/Funk, and wouldn't require much explanation about how the match came to be.

I'd agree w/ Hogan v Andre. You should explain what comes from the match (rise of wrestling, why Hogan is Hogan, impact on pop culture in the 80's and on..)
If your friend (a 'she', I think?) is up to it, I'd show the infamous 'Taker v Mankind (KOR '98) as the (IMO) the definitely match of the Attitude Era. I know Hart/Micheals *inadvertadly* or Hart/Austin may have started it, but the match showed how over the top wrestling had gotten w/ its characters and over the top violence. Another one that has to be put into proper context in order to appreciate.
I'm not sure what the third match would be though. Maybe something technical to show off them being 'athletes'? Maybe a good cruiserweight match. Or if it was up to me; anything w/ Benoit and/or Angle.
Happy searching!

I can think of two:
Brett Hart vs. The British Bulldog in Wembley Stadium (I think it was a Summer-Slam)
Yep! Back in 1992 (I think). I was there, although I was sitting about ten rows from the back. That sucked, plus, I was one of probably only a few hundred in the entire place cheering Hitman on. I was proudly wearing the replica glasses and a shitty leather jacket with a crappy pink Hitman insignia (made by me), complete with a foam belt. *was a BIG wrestling fan back then*
I also loved Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior.
As for a third... dunno.

Other I like are Warrior-Savage WM 7

Your not the only one. I enjoy most of the Matches Bret Hart had.
I cant seem to recall what event it happened but the match involved Owen Hart and Bret Hart spending the entire match wrestling in the center of the ring.
Am I the only one who feels that the Undertaker vs Mankind match was overrated? The only highlight of that was Foley falling off of the top of the Cell and that's pretty much it.
Now the HHH vs Foley match was pretty good.

I still am a major fan of Bret Harts. Honestly, I couldn't stand Degeneration X when it came into existance. I'm still not a very big fan of Triple H or Shawn Michaels.
I was definitely a Hart Foundation Fan. I think my being a fan of Bret Hart had to do more with his wrestling ability. His wrestling was the entertainment and it wasn't so predictable what would happen like with Hogan.
You're not wrong that it wasn't filled with memorable matches. He got choke slammed through the cage (which you try to do everytime you do a HIAC match in a WWE game, that's me anyways) after being tossed off the cell.
What I most remember from that match was that Mankind came back every time something major happened.
I've never actually seen the Triple H-Mankind match in full. Just highlights. Would love to see it though...
Which reminds me to search for that Undertaker DVD. I have no idea where it is...

I definitely have fond memories of Bret/Owen, Razor/HBK's ladder match (the matches that made for one of the best WMania's ever IMO). Anything w/ Benoit is golden, especially w/ Jericho & the ladder match.

Its true that 'Taker v Mankind is overrated in the technical sense that there wasn't really much of a match between beginning and end. It did however (IMO) usher in to the mainstream the 'hardcore' style that only the Indy's, Japan & Mexico have been doing for years. It doesn't help make it less popular w/ the fact that the WWE keeps (and will keep) showing that 3 second clip on EVERYTHING they market. Its kinda like Dr. J's cradle dunk and the NBA; you don't know who won the game, but DAMN that was sick and the NBA will be damned if they don't show it on every highlite.
I'm standing w/ everyone else so far, if you want to show off wrasslin', I'd stay clear of anything hokie or gimmicky. Stick to athleticism, skill, and the ability to suck the crowd into the match- then your friend'll see what you (we) see.

I only started watching wrestling in 1999, so I am not as familiar with the calssic matches and wrestlers (Hogan, Funk, the Hart brothers, etc) as a lot of people here are. However, I will interject some of my favorite matches that I think are worth considering.
Top of the list in Kurt Angle vs. Eddie Guerrero at Wrestlemania XX. This was a great match that was fun to watch and had a great ending. Just really a good all around match.
Cactus Jack and Raven vs. Terry Funk and Tommy Dreamer which happened in ECW in 1995. This match is nuts and I think it really brings across the ECW vibe. Very bloody, so be warned, but it is very fun. I think this really is a good hardcore match.
Finally, I would say either the first or second TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, Edge and Christian, and the Hardy Boyz. Those are always great. I can't recall which one I liked the most, so I am saying either just to be fair.
I know, not the cream of the crop or anything, but they stand out in my mind. I wish I had watched more TNA, because I love their wrestling show, but I don't know which match would be the best out of those. ANything with Samoa Joe probably. :D

True, I was just saying I think it encapsulates a type of wrestling, but I made it clear it is a bit more intense than the others.
Perhaps it's one that can be worked up to, like after you see a bunch of Hogan and Flair matches? :)
Plus the other ones I mentioned are much milder, especially that Angle vs. Guerrero match which is much more fun and technical, and has a great ending.

Ric Flair / Ricky Steamboat Chi-Town Rumble
Sting / Flair All American Bash - Sting's first World Title win. If you don't have Flair / Steamboat, then this is the next best Flair match in his career, IMO.
Bret Hart & Chris Benoit - the Owen Hart Tribute match - it may not be the most exciting matchup either guy ever had, but what the match meant to both participants and the wrestling community and the fact that it is a WRESTLING MATCH, not a slugfest, is the reason for it to be named.
Hart Foundation (Bret Hart & Jim Neidhardt) V. Brain Busters (Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard) Probably the two most scientifically solid tag teams in the modern era.

Ric Flair vs Rick Steamboat: Wrestlewar 89
This is pretty much the best match in history for a reason. 60 Minutes and the 2 never stop. Its got Ric doing and working completely with Steamboat for 60 minutes. The WWE has tried Iron Man matches now , but here in 1989 these 2 made it a classic.
Rob Van Dam vs Jerry Lynn : ECW Living Dangerously 99
Rob Van Dam in ECW was a completely different animal than we see in WWE. He could call a very good match and get 30 to 40 minutes on select PPV's to do his thing. Its when he and Jerry Lynn had their Respect fued that he helped make Lynn a very good star.
Lynn was amazing in this. I mean aboslute amazing as he and Rob traded near blows , kicks , near falls ect ect. Then time ran out and they got 5 more minutes and RVD managed to get the classic win as fans applauded both men.
Rob on his DVD said it best: " My matches with Jerry Lynn were the best of my career and I've never had that come close in the WWE. "
Chris Benoit vs Ric Flair : WCW Thunder 1998
There was nothing on the line between these 2. Benoit was being booked horrible by Kevin Sullivan. Ric Flair was busy clashing with WCW politics. This was a few weeks before he'd be suspended by Bischoff.
The 2 were thrown into a match on Thunder. The show was slowly losing steam anyhow and they were given 25 to 30 minutes to do a match. But its a match that pretty much signafied that Chris Benoit was HERE. He wasn't gonna be booked bad no longer and fans were gonna see what he could do.
The match flowed and moved as Flair seemingly was doing a Sting job for this guy. Benoit and Flair traded moves , wrestled hard and at the end it was a draw. The time had ran out and Benoit had pretty much showcased his skills and himself to more WCW fans.

It's a great match but a lot of the appeal is lost if you have zero knowledge of puro coming in. Same goes for the Misawa\Kobashi matches. How the participants incorporated past history and counter-moves is what makes them special.

Hardcore matches appeal to plenty of teen males but I don't think a woman would get much out of them.
It might also be worthwhile showing her a few memorable promos and comedy segments - like the Rock's promo in Toronto after No Way Out 2003 or the This Is Your Life segment - since that's likely to go over better than Terry Funk getting flung onto barbed wire.

BUT DARNIT! You've all gone and named too many great matches.
Angle/Guerroro at XX is great, especially because the hysterical ending.

I'm sure that it's been mentioned, but I'm going with the triple threat match at Wrestlemania XX for the World title with Benoit, HBK, and HHH.

Joe vs Kobashi
Electric crowd, incredibly stiff.
The only thing loding back my recommendation for that one is that it's indy.
As great as ROH is, it looks like it takes place in a high school gym -- and if you're making a first impression, looks matter.
I'd start with maybe Hitman/Perfect, Summerslam '91. Has generally what the non-watcher would refer to as 'wrestling', and the crowd was SUPER hot.
Fairly high-quality match.
Next...hm, maybe Hardyz/E&C No Mercy '99, Tag Team Ladder Match.
Better than the TLC's to me. The table spots in TLC always seemed a little too contrived and forced, even for a guaranteed spotfest.
The No Mercy match is a real-life action movie in a wrestling ring.
Third...third, hmmm...
If she can stomach sick(er) violence, then Mankind/Taker HIAC it is.
Don't forget, not only does it have the cage bump, it has ANOTHER cage bump, his teeth sticking out his nose, and thumbtacks.
The goal is not to give her a wrestling history lesson, it's to get her interested in seeing more. :)
Maybe one of the Tajiri/Crazy matches.
Don't know how a non-fan would react to Hart/Austin WM 13, I Quit.
In general, when showing matches to someone who doesn't analyze workrate/long-term selling/etc. etc, short is good. Long is boring.

*goes to re-check*
Yep. Joe/Kobashi looks like it takes place in a fairly small venue. I can see the back wall pretty clearly.
Tajiri/SC @ Guilty as Charged looks like it takes place in a proper arena, with multi-leveled seating.
Not that any of this affects in-ring performance, but, like I said, when making a first impression looks do matter.

Super-hot crowd though, probably the best I've seen at a match.

I guess since I regularly see wrestling that actually takes place in high school gyms, armories, etc. it's easier for me to tell when something is not actually one (plus I know factually it wasn't). Joe vs Kobashi was in the New Yorker Hotel and is a very good looking venue.

One Night Only was on the Bret Hart DVD, and the Understaker DVD (which I have lost). I love both matches. He just kicks out of the sharpshooter, sending Bret flying into the aisle.
And these was no interference from the Hart Foundation. Which is what I also loved about Heel Bret Hart. Unlike Hollywood Hogan NWO, he didn't need the boys to help him in the ring.
Not to say that I am not a Hulkamaniac, because I am. I'm just a lot bigger fan of Bret than I am of Hogan.

Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart - Survivor Series (the superior and forgotten match)
I remember than match. Well somewhat, I liked it a lot. I was hoping it would be on Bret Hart's dvd.

Well, it went off.
I went with:
HBK/Angle WM 21
Austin/Bret WM 13
Joe/Daniels/AJ
(with TLC 1 cued up and ready if I could convince her to watch a fourth. She didn't have time).
I'd call it a marginal success. She was into the matches to various degrees. I was shocked how little she reacted to some high-spots, and totally marked out to an atomic drop. Go figure. She says she'll try to make it to the next PPV I order (probably Bound For Glory)
Thanks for all the help guys.
