This is probably the best TV show in the history of the medium, and I truly miss it!
Nate had to be my favourite, because he wsa the most sympathetic, most of the time, but I loved them all.
I loved the way the show explored faith, or lack thereof, and that everyone's position was shown merit, as well as its downfalls.
David was brilliant, because there are so few gay characters on TV, and usually, they're paragons of neutered virtue, but David wasn't. He got laid, frequently, sometimes disasterously. He wasn't above cheating on a boyfriend he truly loved, but always felt guilty about it, and was at times, downright un-likeable. That was a bold move on Alan Ball's part.
The one, slightly disappointing thing in the series, for me, was that Ruth never truly came into her own. I'd longed to see an episode where the kids walk into the kitchen, and find her on a ladder, painting it orange, or something. When asked about it, she'd reply. "Your grandfather picked this colour. He was an awful man, and his taste may be the on thing worse than his disposition! He's been dead for 30 years, and I don't know why I didn't do this sooner!" Even if it was the only thing in the house that she changed, the idea that it was her domain, and she was, after so many years, really claiming it for the first time...

My favourite characters were nate and nathanial although I really had the hots for claire and brenda. I liked nate because he reminded me of myself in some ways. one question-why do you think he killed the snake in season 3 and the bird in season 5?did they represent people?

I'd forgotten about the snake, but in both cases, IIRC, he was in a really unhappy place relationship-wise. It probably was cathartic, and also at odds with the more Zen state he generally tried to maintain.
