How can I make a background clear?

See my avatar? I think that white background is ugly, so I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to tell me how I can make it clear. I've got MSPaint and Photoshop CS2, if that helps.

Use the lasso to select the white color then replace it with the yellow that is used by the forum. You'll need to get that color with a color picker than paste it into Photoshop and apply it to the selection.

Nah, for that particular avatar you can use the wand in photoshop and click the white area around it, then use one of the erasers to get rid of all the white. Then choose Save As, then choose .gif

You could do it the way trickster suggested as well, but then if you wanted to use it elsewhere it wouldn't match.

Just right click and save that to your computer and reupload it as your new avatar.

Well, you can use the lasso, and if the white had broken through to the pic you'd have to. But with it being completely separate the wand is just easier.
