...

The surprising disclosure was made by Senior Program Manager Steve Riley during a presentation on Windows Vista security at Tech.Ed 2006 Sydney today.

“Any next-generation high definition content will not play in x32 at all,” said Riley.

“This is a decision that the Media Player folks made because there are just too many ways right now for unsigned kernel mode code [to compromise content protection]. The media companies asked us to do this and said they don’t want any of their high definition content to play in x32 at all, because of all of the unsigned malware that runs in kernel mode can get around content protection, so we had to do this,” he said.

...Hooray for Microsoft!

Hooray for content protection!

Hooray for the media companies!

Hooray for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD!

... I say let 'em all hang. They're so bent on controlling the content that they're gonna disable screenshots (http://www.heise-security.co.uk/news/75103).

Does it really matter? I mean, how well will HD video run on 32 bit chips?

Does it really matter? I mean, how well will HD video run on 32 bit chips?Does HD really take that much juice? I mean, alot of 32-bit computer screens already run over 1280x720, though most aren't 1920x1080.

But you still won't be able to make backups or take screenshots...for 5 minutes until it's cracked.

Fixed mate. No worries.

Fixed mate. No worries.Perhaps, perhaps. Though they're already building more control into hardware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_computing)* these days and selling it to the underinformed public, so soon even that might not be a sure thing.

It still sucks that you basically have to break the law (thanks, DMCA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMCA)!) to exercise fair use.

*: Read their technical definition of "trust" carefully.

no worriesThere's a dev blog post (http://blogs.technet.com/windowsvista/archive/2006/08/24/450081.aspx) too. Hmmm.

In retrospect, I'm a little disappointed they weren't stupid enough to outright strangle the HD disc formats in the crib after all :p As long as they keep "boiling the frog slowly," most people just won't notice or care about the locking-up of fair use.

Sometimes I wonder whether perfect law enforcement would be a good or bad thing. It would force people to confront and try overturning laws they didn't like, rather than sneaking around them. But it'd also mean that smaller minorities (on any given issue, I mean) would be SOL. I wonder if such a society would remain stable.
