And the whole story gets really pretentious.

Giant robot/alien fights with lots of blood and gore in certain eps and movies, plus its just disturbing emotionally as you delve deep into the psyches of the main characters, they aren't a pretty picture.

I love End of Evangelion. It's the ultimate catharsis the TV series failed to build up to. Sex, violence, and psychology all over the place. Totally worth going off your meds for.
