I was reading Comics should be good, as I do and came across this post.

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2006/08/21/people-suck/#more-1188

Greg Burgas discusses spoilers because I posted the Turner cover to Justice League of America #1. I'll give a bit of a spoiler warning for the line-up if you click on that link (and of course, if you actually read the threads that Greg links to).

I apparently am the reason that people suck and I am "some joker."

Yikes, that's pretty venomous. Some people seriously need to relax.

Eh, I'm kinda with the guy, to be honest. 90% of the time I really cannot stand spoilers before the book is out and want to reach across the internet and smack the people that post them upside the head. And yeah, it's different when there's a warning, but the things threads with warnings end up being mentioned in other threads almost without fail. I studiously avoided the JLA thread, and still ended up finding out several members by accident. Boo-Urns. The only times I don't mind are things like the Saga of that girl claiming to be Cassandra Cain, where I really don't care about what the story's going to be, so long as I get back the character I liked. I'll never see the point of trying to spoil something like BOP, or the Transformers movie, where the people that are interested are going to read the book or see the movie regardless of what's been posted.

If you can't stand spoilers, you do not need to click on the thread where that information is clearly identified.

It was not as if I posted a thread which revealed the line-up and gave no spoiler warning. So it is not as if I was trying to "spoil people" by surprise. People knew what they were getting into.

Except that the info spreads, because fans are fans. I didn't clikc on that thread, and I still ended up finding out several members of the team because people were stupid and looked at that thread then repeated the info elsewhere without bothering with spoilers tags. If this was a nice polite fandom and everyone knew to be careful with spoilers, there would be no problem. That's not this fandom though, this is the fandom where when something is leaked it gets spread around like wildfire, whether you want to hear it or not. Heck, there was a guy on YABS spoiling the big Civil War Spiderman revelation on the day the comic came out, no spoilers tags to be seen. I've carefully tried to avoid anything about the next Spiderman movie, and I still ended up finding out who is going to be in it, and a bit of the plot, despite never clicking on a single thread where that was meant to be the topic.

So the response is to blame the original guy that was actually polite about the nature of spoilers? Granted, I can see why but I still feel that is misplaced. The anger should be placed at people that give no consideration for spoiling others and just type stuff out.

All of my anger is directed at them, but I have enough frustration to spare some for the people that leaked the info in the first place.

It's hard to avoid spoilers when one is on a message board where people are discussing current comics. They are something of an environmental hazard.

For the most part, I don't mind spoilers. Sometimes I will avoid a spoiler thread, sometimes not, and I honestly couldn't tell you what my criteria are. I don't usually get upset even if I find something out that I would have preferred to remain "unspoiled" though, because if the story is really good, knowing the ending doesn't ruin it (for me).

I do sympathize with those people who don't like spoilers and are, on occasion, unpleasantly surprised when clicking on an otherwise innocent looking thread. Sure, a case could be made that those people should just not frequent messageboards where spoilers abound, but that's not really fair. People should just learn some consideration.

That being said, I don't really see how the cover of a comic can really be considered a spoiler. Not in this case, anyway (if this were the cover of the 2nd issue and no one had read the first issue in which the new team was formed, then I could see a problem). By definition, you're going to see it before you even buy the comic anyway. What difference does it make if you see it a week before you read it, or 10 minutes? If you wanted the lineup to be a surprise, then you should blame DC for putting them on the cover in the first place.

I didn't even bother reading most of the article. Fuck him and fuck comic book companies. You can't possibly be so hypocritical as to reveal months and months before her first appearance that the new Batwoman is Kathy Kane and then piss and moan about the Justice League line-up being "spoiled." And as that chattering jackass pointed out, "who gives a shit?" The only people who would bother looking at a thread like that are people who do give a shit, and people who aren't going to pick up the new book have no reason to be annoyed by knowing who's going to be in a book they aren't fucking reading.

Goddamnit, the Internet is lame.

I gave up on trying to avoid spoilers, when Bendis spoiled the fact that Foggy was going to get killed in his farewell letter on his last issue of Daredevil. Not so long ago, everyone in the comic industry avoiding spoiling stuff, but the fact is that if someone spoils something it leads to increase sales so everyone is doing it. The plus side of this phenomena is that it has lead to a fully open diolouge between people that make comics and people that read comics, which is a good thing.

More or less it seemed like he was more mad that Brad Meltzer's JLA is getting this much hype. And you know...the view up on the mountain of comics supremcy is limited to Morrison ya know. ;)

I wouldn't let it bother you. It seems more important that the people buy the comics to mock them than enjoy them. I only do it once for pure fun but I don't make it a habit to have material to write for a blog or online column.

Damn joker....:evilangry ;)
