A girl on the train last night was listening to her iPod at a RATHER LOUD VOLUME. And what was she choosing to listen to on this state-of-the-art music playback device? What kind of quality sounds did she consider it worth spending of hundreds of dollars to be able to enjoy anywhere she goes?

Lame 80s shit. Natalie Cole. Whitney Houston.

Just goes to show, you can't buy taste.

I got one about two weeks ago and its pretty much been perminatly attached to my lugholes ever since. Its a bloody great invention.

I've never been much of an album listener though. Sure I appreaciate the enjoyment of listening to a good album, but to my mind, good albums are few and far between. I usually find myself skipping to the next track that I want to listen to, and on most albums that not really more than three or four tracks. I went through my cd's just uploading those pieces of music I want to listen to.

So I've now got pretty much everything from John Williams film scores, to Bucks Fizz to Nine Inch Nails to The Wonderstuff to Britpop tunes to Bobby "Boris" Picket and the Cyrptkickers. Its a plethora of excellent and crap pieces of music and the only thing they have in commen is that I like them all.

Its a pity the battery lasts something like five minutes though.

From American Psycho to you.

Patrick Bateman: Did you know that Whitney Houston's debut LP, called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it? Did you know that, Christie?
Elizabeth: [laughing] You actually listen to Whitney Houston? You own a Whitney Houston CD? More than one?
Patrick Bateman: It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.

Some of these might come as quite a surprise.

The playlist includes much softer & much harder stuff than this; this is just a sampler list. I usually skip 'Bravado' when it comes on, though, because it always makes me cry.

I'll also add that as far as iPods go, I've owned 10 MP3 players and given away 7 of them. The iPod Nano is simply a superior product. There's no mystique or fashion about it to me; the thing is just so well-designed and well-made, it gets the "keeper" category.

Also, the nano was a gift from my father for my 40th birthday. He had the back of it engraved:

Larry
Golden Harrier

And for a comics link, the Bad For Good album had beautiful cover art by Richard Corben.

I had a Shoutcast Euro Dance station playing last week and on it Steinman had a new track out, in German.

There's math here I think. Jim Steinman is to Meatloaf as Lindsay Buckingham is to Fleetwood Mac as Peter Gabriel is to Genesis.

:)

PS: ElvisGuy... my mother was invited to a party that Elvis Presley was going to be at, when she was a gorgeous young teenybopper, but she declined because she had an awful flu and did not want to give Elvis her flu while he was on tour. Awwww.
PPS: My dad was the head man for The Lancers, and played with Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Chuck Berry.
PPPS: And yes we still have the 57 Chevy I have had since I was 14.

My god, I have over 10,000 mp3s now that I ripped my entire CD collection as well. I can't really give an overview, so I made a playlist that only included artists that I had more than 60 songs by and here's what came up:

Sleater-Kinney
Jeff Buckley
Ella Fitzgerald
Joni Mitchell
Fiona Apple
Stars
Matthew Good (Band)
Pretty Girls Make Graves
Cocteau Twins
Duran Duran
The Smiths
Depeche Mode
The Cure
Fall Out Boy
Strung Out
Third Eye Blind
Elliott Smith
Aesop Rock
Architecture in Helsinki
Sonic Youth
The Get Up Kids
Sunny Day Real Estate
Xiu Xiu
Tegan & Sara
Explosions in the Sky
George Michael (shhh!)
Utada Hikaru (shhhhhh!)

... and last but not least, as a nearly decade-long member of the *NSYNC fanclub, I have two or more editions of each of their popular album except for the last one (which I own only once, because it just wasn't good), most of the singles, the Christmas album, Justin Timberlake's album & singles, JC Chasez's album and singles, most CDs with one-off songs they've done, ... and I will even confess to already having heard all of FutureSex/LoveSounds (because I'm hardcore!).

Yeah, I know. :o People nearly always fall over backwards when I show them my membership card. They're DECEPTIVELY CATCHY, OKAY!

Hey, Siv... good friend Janis Ian very much digs N'Sync, and hey, she learned guitar from Jimi Hendrix and is a Grammy Hall of Fame inductee. N'Sync might not be to everyone's personal taste, but no one can deny there's quality there.

She's a comic book fan too. And big fantasy & scifi book fan, too, which is how we got together. And she's turning into a mighty fine scifi short story author, too.
