It seems British TV will be editing out scenes from the cartoon that contain smoking because of a complaint.

Wow.

I remember a few years ago there were complaints (here in the States I believe) about how violent it was.

Good to know the priorities have changed....

"Cartoons aimed at children."

Now, correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the cartoons of that time period shown as a break between the newsreel and the feature? As in, "not specifically made for children to begin with?"

No, the cartoons weren't made for children. They were made for a general audience, comprised mainly of adults, but with children there, as well.

did they get rid of Tom's stereotypical owner, yet?

"Mammy" was redubbed with an Irish (!) accent in a couple of the cartoons released to TV; I think a few cartoons actually re-animated her sequences and gave her white limbs and hands but not all. There is also a T&J cartoon with a younger (late teens/early 20s) African-American housekeeper who goes out and parties one night; for TV release she was given a white voice, which wasn't too jarring.

TNT regularly edited out suicide, smoking, and drug references to their MGM and Warner Bros cartoons, as well as racial references. And, or course, there are about six or eight WB cartoons that will probably never air anywhere again (though you can find 'em in whole or in part on the Internet).

Thank god for the internet. I can find the cartoons unedited and still funny.
