Not the best work I've got, just what I had with me when a friend's scanner presented itself.
That being said, here's a pic of Loligo, one of the main characters from the book I'm working on called "Amphibia".
If anyone has any ideas (any at all!) of what the three bones could be used for, I would love to hear 'em! Haven't been able to figure this out and it's driving me crazy!

Do ya still have that pic of him where he's all surrounded by fish and rocks and such? I liked that one.
About the bones? They could be used for decoration :D.

kc? Nice stuff. But, the Hellboy looks a bit like you from the
pics we've seen. Loligo? Is he the the good-guy or the bad-guy
or just a minor character. As a bad-guy he could say something like,
"These bones are all that remain of those that thought they
could steal from me." or as a good-guy, "Remind me to tell you
why I wear these bones."
Just think, when you and Naiad move in together, yous guys can
spend hours writing back story for your characters. ;)

Perhaps the 3 bones are trophies he took from 3 of his mentors once he surpassed them in his abilities? I always liked the look of small bone trophies on the Predator maybe that idea could work for you here somehow.

It's funny, I did'nt even realize he hardly ever smiles until I was sketching HB a bit last night. I did'nt draw him smiling though, but his frown made me REALIZE he hardly ever smiles. Thanks for the feedback gang.
Got a couple of ideas last night when I was tossing and turning and unable to sleep. Man, I've been having way too much insomnia lately.
I had a vision of Loligo tossing one of the bones into a underwater graveyard and all the skeletons come rising to the surface and basically form his army.
Another idea is that they are the bones of 3 of Cthulhu's eldergod siblings who rose up against him. He had them destroyed, but somehow their spirits live on in these bones. They come to Loligo's aid when...?
I'll be posting some more art later today, including the piece that Jelly Meets Jam mentioned. Some of which is much different...

Really interesting style, KC. I'd enjoy seeing you try a two page scene with your characters. No big plot, just an activity --hunting food, sinking a ship, watching Jay and Silent Bob, whatever their personalities might suggest. Don't worry about a slick finish, just pencils. It's a neat style I'd like to see applied to action.
Glad you posted these.

Page 3 panel 2, dialogue from off panel - "Loligo! It is good to see you again my young friend!"
Panel 3 - "It is good to see you too, Galdei. How are things with the Order?"
Before I continue with the dialogue, there are some things here to note.
The hammerheads are a group of monks called "The Eternal Order of The Ring". They guard a huge area of ocean that exists within their tiny blood coral temple. It's magic, don't ask. This is where Loligo brought the egg for safe keeping. He hasn't been back in a long time, and the egg hatched a boy Degashu. The boy has grown up wild in the vast expanse of ocean they guard, and is the only sentient being living there. The monks stay in the coral temple, never venturing into the "wild waters" unless absolutely necessary. But none of them have seen the boy in several months and they are concerned, of course.
Galdei continues...
"Just yesterday the other elders and I dispatched a small party to search for the boy. Drichthyes is with them. He has been with The Order as long as I, and I trust his judgement above all others. Even though this land is vast, moreso than we may possibly ever know, I know that their endeavors will be met with success."
Loligo - "Galdei, I have known you my entire life. You have always been there for me, but something does not feel quite right about this. Her (revealed later) voice is silent to me, here in this haven of purest nature where it should be at it's strongest."
Galdei - "Our magicks are strong, my friend. Even Her shouts are mere whispers here in the presence of our spells. It is She who birthed our secret knowledge. I know that if the situation was indeed dire, nothing we could do would silence Her."
Loligo - "Of course. You are right Galdei. The boy means much to me. If he is indeed the last of his kind, his survival may mean much more to the balance of things than we could know. I will make the trip to Vhumara and return here as soon as I am able. It will be good to see him again."
Something I noticed is I used the word "know" a little more frequently than I like. Easily fixed.
I'm also not sure I want Loligo to sound so wise. He's got a lot of power that he doesn't understand, but it's hard to write him like he doesn't have it. I'd better go read Bone again...

Wow, I don't know if I'd go that far just yet. But yeah, that would be the ultimate goal.
I'm actually in contact with a publisher about two cities away. I met their whole retinue on the plane home from SD, and we definitely jelled. They had a booth at the con and said they couldn't believe how many fans they had. Hopin' to be a part of that booth next con.
And remember, these are just thumb nails. The end result may be a little different. Hopefully MUCH better.
Thanks again guys.
And Robert, by all means, keep 'em coming! It's nice to know that I've given you a little inspiration. All the kind words inspire me in turn, so it looks like we've got a reciprocal thing going on here. And don't worry yourself about adding any copyright stuff on your drawings of Loligo. I'm not worried, although I appreciate your tact. I'll probably "self publish" (ie zine style) these before a publisher feels like taking a chance on me, and you could be my pin-up guy!

Wow!
I don't get to post more than once or twice a week, so I didn't know what to expect (if anything) when I got back on.
You guys are completely awesome! I mean it! It feels really good to see other people drawing your characters.
Well, I've got the entire first issue thumbnailed out now. I wanted to get at least that much done before I went and fleshed out a whole page that would possibly not work as the story developed. Issue two has a couple of thumbs done as well.
Tomorrow I'll be posting a new character who is probably my favorite. He's sort of that "really cool character you wanna see all the time, but if you did, he wouldn't be as cool" type. You know, the mystery character.
His name is simply "O", and he has a seahorse sidekick named "Kamana".
One of the plot devices that will be hit on later in the story is how seahorses have become enslaved throughout a lot of the sea. They don't speak the common tongue and have no opposable digits, so they're viewed as inferior. They're not, and an uprising is in the works.

I honestly have to say, I feel pretty confident about it too. It's the execution I'm worried about. I want to have at least the first mini down before I even try anything like that. And I really want to find the art style I'm comfortable with. But I'm riding this huge wave of inspiration after the SD con and it feels great to be focusing on this story again. The first Amphibia drawing I did was 14 years ago, so this story has definitely been floating around in my head for a while!

Got the first two issues thumbed out now, as well as three 4 page backups for the first three issues. Think I'm gonna be able to tell the first tale in three issues.
This is somewhat of a new style for me, and I'm not sure now long it will actually take me to get the finished product down. I'd hate to get halfway through the story, and realize that my figures are drastically changing.
So, on that note...
Would you rather see the thumbnails to the whole thing, or just have me post finished pages as I wrap them up?
I don't think I really mind either way, but it would be fun to do a comparison as we go along.

I'm diving into the actual pages now, and it's taking me a long time. It's tricky to remember to leave the appropriate space for dialogue. I'm also trying to put as much detail into the coral and environments as I can. It looks pretty cool in contrast to the cartoony type characters.

Well ...I'm gonna have to agree with Tad. I feel that the drawings are so eloquent that all the words end up detracting ... and are actually redundant. I totally understood the first page before you had the dialogue in there. The word "cowards" is really all you need. I will admit that I tend heavily toward the less-is more school of thought but I love it when there is something left to figure out after the first read... gives the thing depth!

I'm really enjoying this so far, it's not hard to imagine this being picked up by a major publisher, but I just wish Loligo would emote more. He seems to have this blank expression perpetually painted on his face, which is fine for the most part, but in the scene where he finds out the boy is missing, it actually looks like he's smiling in a few of the panels, whereas I'm almost certain he should be frowning.
And as for the dialogue, I'm definitely in the "less is more" camp.
kid cthulhu
09-21-2004, 02:14 PM
Cool!
Some REAL criticism.
I agree, the dialogue is the biggest challenge for me.
The hammerhead monks need to speak a little sophisticated in order to keep with their character. But I've been struggling to keep the dialogue somewhat limited while still giving people something to actually read.
And the issue of emoting is a good one.

The Black Rock City and Planet of Sound pieces are wonderful. I agree, somebody needs to pick up your style for some animated thing or you need to do a comic in such a style, though I know it would be a lot of work.

Haven't heard of that comic, City, but I'll have to give it a look.
As far as screenprints go, I've been wanting to do that but my know-how on so many things is real limited. Right now I'm working on a plush character, and since its the first one I've ever done, its pretty slow going. Been playing with sculpey too, but man that frustrates me. I have issues with patience...
The HB PDF will be coming along hopefully soon.

Cool! You should be doing album covers and t-shirts and things. I'm sure you've got aspirations in that direction.
I'm still on the waiting list for a jellyfish t-shirt! ;)

Ruta - What size shirt should I make you? I know its never polite to ask a lady these things, so PM me if you'd like.
Dr. Flem - Thank you, that one's got a little special place in my heart.
THE HELLBOY PAPER DOLL PDF IS READY TO ROCK
Anyone know of a service I can host it on? Free, that is?
I'd really like to get these out to everyone.

the pop-gun colors are brilliant. really sweetlike.
You can use http://yousendit.com to send stuff, I don't know how many times it can have stuff downloaded before it removes the file, but it's worth a shot.
OR, depending how big the file is, I don't think it would be a problem to put it on my (admittedly not-updated) site.
Word up.
