I did a quick search and didnt' see a thread for Clint Eastwood films so I thought I'd start one. I have recently grown my Clint Eastwood DVD collection via the 5.95 bin at Wal Mart. They have had tons of movies, (no special additions) on pretty much all the major Eastwood films. I had a few already but now the collection is growing. Currenty I have Hearbreak Ridge, The Ditry Harry Collection (bought by my awesome girlfriend for my b-day), Paint Your Wagon, High Plains Drifter, City Heat, Outlaw Josey Whales, Unforgiven, Any Which Way You Can, Hang Em High, The Spaghetti Westerns (Good,Bad,Ugly, Fist Fulll of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More), The Rookie, Bronco Billy, Absolute Power and I'm sure I'm leaving some out.

I gotta say Clint Eastwood is one of my favorite actors and filmmakers. I'm looking forward to the 2 new movies he's got coming out. Directing both of them. One is Flag of Our Fathers about the men who raised the flag on Mt Sarabichi on Iwo Jima. And another about WWII based on the accounts of the Japanses side.

One of my all time favorite movies is Heart Break Ridge. If it wasnt for this movie, I may not have joined the Marine Corps. Me and my buddies would quote that movie religiously especially my buddy who went to boot camp with me. Thier isnt a conversation I dont have with my cousin and a friend of ours that doesnt end up quoting Outlaw Josey Whales. Heck half the time when we go out on the town, the 3 of us end up smoking backwater cigars.

So anyone have a favorite Eastwood movie or line or story. Thought maybe we could discuss.

I would say my favorite Clint Eastwood movie is The Outlaw Josey Wales. It's also my favorite western ever. I like everything about the movie, and I especially like the ending with the vastly underrated John Vernon (Dean Wormer from Animal House). I would say Heartbreak Ridge might be my 2nd favorite Eastwood movie. There are some damn quoteable lines in that movie. Gunny Highway rocks big time.

As for the movies directed by Eastwood....Well Josey Wales is my favorite, but for his recent reinassance, I would say I think my favorite movie he directed was Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I liked the book a lot, but I thought the movie was really great. I liked Million Dollar Baby, but didn't think it was the best movie of 2004. I think Mystic River is a Lifetime movie glitzed up with big names. Of course, I think Lehane is one of the most overrated writers of his generation and genre. And, I also think Unforgiven is one of the most dissapointing movies I ever saw. I just have never seen what was so special about it. Sure he gave the "Man with No Name" a name and backstory in that movie....but he did that already, and to greater effect in The Outlaw Josey Wales. One Clint movie that I think tends to get lost in the shuffle, that will never be called great, but that is damn entertaining is Space Cowboys. I like anything about space travel that is not total Sci-Fi, and this movie was good for that. Very fun movie.

Unforgiven is wonderful. All around. The direction, the acting, everything. It's long, but I don't care. It's like going back to see what Josey Wales would have been up to if he grew old and met a woman who made him settle down. Cinematography, pace. It makes a complete package.

I like Absolute Power and In The Line of Fire too. I could have done without the love interest angle of with Russo's character. I thought Eastwood and Malkovitch played well off each other. Always good to see a cold, calculating Malkovitch on the screen.

Dude, Josey Wales did settle down. And he did have a family. That's why he went and fought the Kansas folk. That was the point of Josey Wales.

I don't dislike Unforgiven because it's long. I am dissapointed for the most part if any movie I watch is under two hours.

Sure the acting was superb. Well, actually only the acting of Gene Hackman, Richard Harris, and Saul Rubinek. Clint phoned it in. This is one of the few times Morgan Freeman did it too. And the Schofield Kid was basically Sam Bottoms part in Josey Wales with a new actor. Hell, he even looked like Sam Bottoms character in Josey Wales.

Unforgiven is basically a rehash of Josey Wales done a little more arty. Nothing more, Nothing less.

Long?! I can see if the acting has something to do with a person not liking the movie but if the only argument a person could make is that it's too long seems like a pretty weak reason. It's like someone saying they hate Empire Strikes Back or the first Christopher Reeve Superman film because "It's Too Long".

Unforgiven had the right elements of what a western movie should have. It's dark, grimm, and has remorseless villains but realistic to a point. The movie practically showed why the west was infact called the wild west.

I like Unforgiven, but I agree I dont see what all the critical aclaim is for. To me any scene with Hackman was great, but the best part was the end when Clint went all crazy again.

I really like Pale Rider. You are never quite sure if he's an Angel or just a kick ass preacher man.

I am dying to get Kelly's Heros. That is a cool ass war movie and has tons of stars in it. Love the Dirty Dozen type movies and this is one of them.

Josey Whales is still one of the all time best movies. I love how Chula from the Philo Beto movies was a gang leader in this as well, albiet much more serious. Love the part where he spits tobacco on the tonic salesmen and ask's "How's it with stains?" Also I like when he spit tobacco on the dog.

What, no love for TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARA?

Seriously, I'd rank THE UNFORGIVEN at the top of Clint's Western list, followed by the OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, BRONCO BILLY, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER (which I liked much better than its remake as PALE RIDER), THE GOOD THE BAD & THE UGLY, A FISTFULL OF DOLLARS, then all the rest.

Guilty pleasures are EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE, ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN, KELLY'S HEROES, and WHERE EAGLES DARE.

I also liked him in FRANCIS JOINS THE NAVY and REVENGE OF THE CREATURE, where he answered the question, "Is that a mouse in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

Trivia answer: Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef but not Eli Wallach.

Trivia question: Name the stars of THE GOOD THE BAD & THE UGLY who killed giant monsters early in their careers. (Eastwood was the jet pilot who napalmed TARANTULA, Lee Van Cleef was the marksman who shot THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS with the radioactive grenade.)

And don't forget Clint directed a great scary film, Play Misty For Me.

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly is one of my favorite westerns. A masterpiece. Dirty Harry is classic 70s. Don't forget his disturbing performance in Tightrope.

Also I liked Blood Work. I'm so looking forward to his two new films.

THE BEGUILED is another great scary Eastwood film, this one in the Southern Gothic tradition.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is my favorite Western.

I've seen the first Dirty Harry movie, and liked it. I should make time to watch the others sometime.

I've always liked Outlaw and Unforgiven. Dirty Harry is probably one of my favorite cop movies, and its really a precursor to things like Die Hard and Leathal Wepon, the cop on the edge type of movies. The Sergio Leone movies all kick butt. I think that High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider are a little over-rated. Other than that I really cant think of any that have stuck in my mind.

Right genre, wrong movie. Clint was the jet fighter pilot who dropped napalm on TARANTULA.

That leaves only the Lee Van Cleef connection. Anybody?

i THOUGHT TARANTULA WAS A DANCE?:evilangry

A "tarantella" is a folk dance of Italian origin; the folk lore behind it is that either a spider bite makes a person dance crazily or by dancing crazily one can counter the effects of a spider bite (I forget which and am too lazy to look it up).

Spanish explorers named the big spiders of Mexico and the American Southwest tarantulas in honor of the dance.

I once again added to my Clint Eastwood collection. Today I added Kelly's Heroes and A Perfect World. Best Buy has a few Eastwood movies for 4.99 this week if anyone has any desire to get cheap yet good movies.

Josey Whales was a romanticized hollywood action western. I prefer to think that Eastwoods point was to create more of a real western setting, instead of hollywood BS. He did it very well, and I believe all performances were awesome and not "phoned in". Not to mention the characterization was amazing, far above almost anything I've ever seen. MHO, it's easily his best work, acting or directing. William Munney for teh win.
