You get 2 million dollars. The catch? You have to donate 1 mill to at least one charity.

What do you donate to? The "Why?" is optional.

Me, the MDA Association.

The Peace Corps. They do good work. Or maybe my old church in New Jersey.

I annually donate to the Red Cross and American Heart Organization. I'd probably split the million between the two.

Fresh Air Fund (http://www.freshair.org/).

They provide free summer vacations in the country for inner city New York kids.

The Stephen and Melinda Gates Foundation.

They're staunchly anti-bear.

On a more serious note, I'd give half a million to the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the other half to IPac.

I'd divide it into mid-term congssional campaigns to get the seats neccessary to impeach George W Bush! That's a very worthy cause, and will positively impact so many others!

Electronic Frontier Foundation would probably be my choice.

Surprised nobody's said CBLDF yet.

Heh. Good luck with that. There won't be enough votes in either the House or Senate for it, and 1 mil isn't enough to do it. You'll have to be like everyone else and wait until 2009.

The HRC, the largest and most influential advocacy group for GLBT rights gets half.

The Make a Wish Foundation gets the other half.

I would hold a nation wide contest. The person or family that I choose that needs the most help, and would not get stupid with the money....Gets it.

I'd donate it to local, inner-city Scout troops (as opposed to giving it to the Council) and other organizations that benefit needy local youth.

Why I'd donate it to CBR just to see what crazy stuff happens.

But seriously I'd probably donate it to various public schools throughout NYC.

Do we have to pick just a single charity? If so, probably the American Diabetes Association.

If I could pick more than 1, I'd split it up 10 ways, $100,000 each, to help a variety of causes, including the American Cancer Society, the World Wildlife Fund and the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom.

You can donate as you see fit.

If I can split it up:

My state, local and national Green Parties.
maximum donations to prominent Green candidates and incumbents
Americans United for Separation of Church and State
a HUGE sum to Seattle Public Schools to prevent school closures and fix up schools that currently need the funds for repairs and teachers.

That would account for most of my money spent. I'd leave a portion of it gather interest and live off of it, so that I could quit my job and be a full time activist.

The only thing I would ever want to buy for myself with that kind of dough is a copy of Hulk #1.

You'd have better luck using $2 million to dig up the sort of dirt to blackmail him into resigning.

I'd give at least 200,000 to my church as a tithe, maybe more. If it would count, I'd set up a scholarship foundation for Bushwick kids. I already got two candidates.

I try to go beyond it when possible. This summer I've been bad, with the moneyflow being real messed up because of weddings and honeymoons and such. I try to placate myself about the savings account I've set up for a smaller version of the foundation I mentioned above, but I gotta get back on the tithing horse.

I've been really bad about tithing lately. I guess it just comes from not knowing which church to tithe to here. I kind of like the small Catholic church in nearby Woodville, but I need to actually go - I've been bad about that as well. I don't like going alone, but my wife feels out of place there, as I feel out of place at her church.

Lisa was raised Pentacostal AG and I was a back-row Methodist. We attend a presbyterian church now, and it's not quite a compromise (it's basically Methodism from Scotland) but we both like it. It's actually one of the things that cemented our relationship from early on.

That's a tough mix.

Well, it depends on what goes on in the environment. When her church's pastor/preacher uses a lot of Biblical references it's much more interesting. He's pretty good about that. I'm just more used to the quieter, structured Catholic mass. But I'm dour that way.

When I go with her, the good thing she does is she lets us go late, so I don't have to endure the hour-long, repetitive singing session. Making a joyful noise is good, but for a hour? This way, when we get there, it's usually at the tail end of the singing and just about when the pastor/preacher is about to speak. I can usually just tune out the people who insist on speaking in tongues.

I'd split it in the middle. Million each for:
Heal the Bay: http://www.healthebay.org/
and
The Los Angeles Zoo: http://www.lazoo.org/supportthezoo.html

Support local charities and local farming.

Honestly? I don't have a fucking clue. I don't know where my money would actually do good.

But, heck, I'm sure this thread will give me good ideas.

I've always been a strong supporter of this group here...

They provide models and such to wounded soldiers while they are in the hospital, as well as gifts around the holidays.

JeffreyWKramer

Probably UNICEF.

UNICEF isn't a bad choice. They do good work, and they're more efficient than most UN-affiliated organizations. That said, an awful lot of UNICEF funding goes into administrative costs and other stuff that doesn't translate into direct service.

I'd personally love to see UNICEF work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with the Foundation using its organizational expertise to help trim costs and maximize benefits. Last time I looked, the Gates Foundation had the best contribution-to-benefit ratio of any major charitable organization.

In the past, I might have said the BSA, and if it could offset the Mormon/Fundie monetary influence in the organization now, I would do it.

But I would probably set up a fund for lobbyists from the WWF (or one of the other cost efficient green charities), and probably the other half to the CBLDF.

I messed up when I made my choice. I chose them because I thought the Micronutrient Initiative was a UNICEF program, not an independent charity that works with them.
