That's a screencap from the premiere episode. From that one shot, he looks pretty good. There's another shot of him in the slide show just after he's released the arrow, and he looks appropriately smug. I'm not sure, but I think his character is supposed to be about 25 or so. Not sure if that's too young or not, but I'll check it out. The premiere episode also has the debut of Jimmy Olsen who will date Chloe on the show. I'll check out the first episode for those two things, but I have no idea if I'll keep watching for the rest of the season.

That's... pretty much how I would envision a young GA to look like.
Jimmy Olsen? Is there anyone from the Superman mythos that hasn't been used at this point? :D

I don't necessarily mind the "young heroes' cameos, but I think bringing all of the Daily Planet/Metropolis supporting characters to Smallville is overkill. Granted, since the show will end when Clark leaves Smallville for Metropolis, the producers don't have any practical concerns about how what they do will play out with regards to Clark's future life as Superman. Still, they have to be aware that people (even noncomics fans) are going to wonder about how having him meet Perry, Jimmy, Lois (and live with her, no less) will affect the whole "they don't know Clark Kent is SUperman" thing.

Jimmy should definitely not be a contemporary of Clark. He's meant to be years younger.

Yeah thats how I pictured a young Oliver Queen as well. I hope he's opinionated as hell. Plus charms the ladies. Because thats how it goes.
If this works....could we see an Oliver Queen: Hard Traveling Hero series ? Hell that would be an awesome name for a series: Hard Traveling Hero.
Also when is the episode gonna air. I so wanna watch it.

I like GA and Aquaman, but how the hell can they appear before Batman and Wonder Woman?
Ontir

IIRC, Batman/Bruce Wayne hasn't appeared because of the control over film/TV, by the producers of the films. That's why, aside from the opening of the show, neither was able to appear on Birds of Prey. Same for the Joker.
I like the idea that despite growing up wealthy, Oliver is already following his long-established populist/socialist political path, and it makes sense that someone like Green Arrow would say, "Hey, why don't we band together, so we can be of better service, as a united force?"

Didn't Shawn Ashmore play a villain in season 1 and now he is playing Jimmy Olsen? I guess they're gonna ignore that little tidbit.

It was MEANT to be Krypto, they had a white dog, who showed up to shoot, but couldn't do any of the required tricks. The retreiver could, and they were ready to shoot, so RE-WRITE!!!

And why is Ollie in his hero garb? I thought they were all wearing regular clothes in this series.

I think they're using the "costume party" trick for this one.

Or it could just be they're employing a bit of irony, and the only guy to show up in costume is the least "super" hero around.

Or cause Ollie doesn't put up with this "too cool for costumes" WB crap.
I hope he nails every female character on the show. Most of them could use a good lay...

Maybe its a time-traveling Jimmy Olson?
Also, CW hasn't changed their minds about not doing an Aquaman show, have they? They'd have to go through the casting process all over again.

It would be hilarious if the entire episode was Jimmy gaining one super power after the other, starting with him time travelling to the past.

A Green Arrow spinoff from Smallville would be cool. I'm surprised they showed Oliver in the GA suit on the show. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have always had this thing about not showing superheroes in costume.
Ontir
10-18-2006, 01:28 PM
I think the "no tights, no flights" rule is more that flying costs money, and if he's in the suit, he has to fly. Given all the stuff with "Superboy" it might've made for more sturm & drang if he wore that, as well.
I think sending Ollie back to Star City for his own spin-off would be a great idea though!

Green Arrow isn't exactly as popular as other DC heroes but a series could be interesting.
Armless Penguin
10-18-2006, 01:37 PM
While awesome, I doubt it would take, at least depending upon Smallville's boost to the character's popularity. Aquaman is, after all, a much more widely known character than Green Arrow, and his show was rejected.

It's not about widely known, it's about open to adaptation. Anytime you go into the water, the price goes up. There's also some built-in resistance to Aquaman on the studio end. Ollie on the other hand, is a guy with a bow. he can go anywhere, and do any kind of story - it's really open-ended. Ollie also has some interesting politics that could be explored over the course of the series, and then there's Dinah and Hal!

You're right about that. Given the look of the first episode, I'm sure the sets and locations of Aquaman were quite expensive. But I do think that the general public's knowledge of the character is a factor; given the relatively poor ratings of CW's brand new shows this season (i.e. Runaway), it seems to me they would much rather pick up a show with a character people are already familiar with than one without. That said, I'm wondering if that's the reason Ollie has such an extended arc on Smallville this season, in order to produce a more sufficient spin-off. That would be great.

GA isn't exactly unknown, though. GL/GA was a HUGE book at one time, which got a lot of attention because of the drug story with Speedy, not to mention the artwork by Neal Adams. More recently, he got relaunched by Kevin Smith, which again boosted his Qrating. If you come up with good scripts, have a decent budget, and a character who's interesting, and open to any number of story options, you can get the public interested.

I'm not sure Dinah and Hal will be in it. Hal is his own franchise of course, and wasn't Dinah already in BIRDS OF PREY? (Not that familiar with the TV incarnation of BOP).
Speedy/Arsenal, on the other hand, could be used. Maybe they can even get Winick and Smith to produce a few scripts here and there.
Ontir
10-18-2006, 02:23 PM
Dinah could very easily be in it. Not at first, perhaps; but in future seasons (I'd really love to see "Sherwood Florist" on-screen!), and Hal would probably be more of a pre-GL, easter egg, than a full GL/GA thing. Speedy could be REALLY interesting as Ollie takes him in, and then learns of his drug addiction!

GA isn't exactly unknown, though.
To the vast majority of TV watchers who don't read comics he is. And he's not exacly an A-lister among moost comic readers in the age group that a TV show like that would likely target.

He may be unknown to some younger viewers; but the guy's been a part of American Pop-culture for more than 50 years at least. He's been in JLU recently, and has had times enumerated previously, when he was very much in the public spotlight. Ultimately though it really doesn't matter if he's an un-kown. Ally MacBeal, the Huxatables, and ever character on Lost were unknown to the public at one point, and they managed. The more important factor, is how open to story possibilities the character is. Ollie is one of the most "real-world" comic book characters out there, and therefore, the most adaptable.
