View Full Version : Best/Worst book you read this week? (8/16)

Green Lantern Corps #3 came out this week, and after last week's "cliffhanger" ending, the somewhat-expected shocking twist this week followed it very well. Not only is Korugar's new Lantern, Soranik Natu, shaping up to be a great addition to the Corps, she's showing off some balls people like Hal and Guy haven't shown in years. Gibbons's writing is superb, and Gleason's art was exceptional this issue. His attention to detail is going to be great for these alien-settings.
That was the best book I read this week. The worst book is a tough call. Nightwing #123 sucked hard, lacking almost any direction at all. However, I think 52 #15 takes it this week. It's pretty apparent that Dan DiDio has absolutely no idea what to do with a lot of characters given the past two years of his "reign."
If you haven't read it already, prepare to be spoiled. As the cover hints, Booster Gold dies in this issue, in one of the most spectacularly stupid deaths since Ch'p got hit with a yellow truck. It even seems like Dan tried to make ammends with JLI fans by having him go out a hero, but all it did for me was piss me off even more. And insult to injury, he had this (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=80918) to say over at Newsarama. I'd say it's pretty clear this guy knows jack shit about how to write.
So those're my "cheers and jeers" this week. What'd you guys get that made it worth spending ridiculous amounts of money on comics?

I didn't get much this week. RUNAWAYS was pretty good, as usual.

52 was pretty stupid, though I don't think Booster's really dead. The Boys #1 was pretty entertaining, though Ennis can write this stuff in his sleep. The art was pretty good. Slim pickins again this week. That Justice Society TP was pretty fun.

All I bought was 100 Bullets # 75. It was a good issue. It's a perfect example of why some people love the series and why some hate it. I love it. Cool cover too.

Green Lantern Corps #3 was indeed kickass. I was pissed seein Natu dead at the end of issue two, so it was great to see what they were plottin in this issue.
Civil War: X-Men #2 was pretty good also, looking forward to how it all plays out.
Ion #5 was great though! Finally got the pay off on whats been up with Kyle, even if we don't have every detail, at least now we have a better idea.

I saw #1 and flipped through it yesterday at the shop. I was interested due to Way and Texteria, but not anymore. Thanks, Clint.
I almost picked up GLC #3 yesterday, but I think I'll wait on the TPB. Thanks for spoiling it TinBoy!

I finally read WE3. That was by far the best thing I read this week.
Runaways and Civil War: X-Men were alright. I was a bit disappointed with the gaffs and the near absence of a plot with CW: XM though.

I really wanted to get Ion, but the art and nonsense in the story just put me off of it. I like the GLC, but I'm not digging it as much without Kyle there. I wish that they would have kept him in the GLC, as Ion.

Well, considering Ion is only a 12 issue maxi-series, they've probably got plans for him after that, hopefully he will be w/ the Corps.

I didn't know it was a maxi-series. It's probably getting low sales due to the butt ugly art and bullshit 1st issue, so they decided to make it only 12 issues.

Haha, Tochinni's art takes some getting used to, its been better in the last 2 issues (4 & 5). As I recall though, it has said "# of 12" since the first issue right on the cover. I thought it was an ongoing prior to the first issue.

My attention span leaves much to be desired.
Maybe I'll pick up GLC or whatever Kyle is in next. I was really digging the Kyle/Guy partner thing in GLC: Recharge. I think that they really dropped the ball with this Ion crap. Instead of one series that sucks, and another one that I can manage to resist picking up, they could have had a kickass GLC book with Kyle and Guy as the main characters that I would have to have every month.

It's an independant book from Boom studios, written by Kieth Giffen and Alan Grant (the guys behind Lobo's best stories). Some guys on the Independant board recommended it.
There is a preview and a couple of guy's comments on the series here:

You have a point there. I have dropped down to buying 7 titles or so monthly. I guess I could afford to pick something else up. Maybe I'll drop Captain America if I decide that Harm is pretty good. That will almost pay for it.
It's not the price of the individual issues, but when you collect 20 titles or something at $ 3 each....well you get the point. They add up quick.

NEXTWAVE was more fun than should be allowed by law. The Mindless Ones skateboarding? Yes, please.
THUNDERBOLTS had a nice moment or two but had too much crossover-y crap going on for me to really enjoy it.
100 BULLETS . . . I liked the idea of the issue more than the actual execution. Azzarello has used the parallel stories bit before in his single issue interludes, but this wasn't the best iteration of it. Still, Lono's always fun.
FELL wasn't as good as the previous issue. It was disturbing, but not very engaging.
ULTIMATE FF was ass, from Millar's devamp of Ellis's Ultimate Doom to Land's lightbox-o-rama. Even Marvel Zombies couldn't save it. Bring on Carey and Ferry.
RUNAWAYS was good. Angsty aftermath storylines aren't always my cup of tea, but this one seems to be hitting all the right notes.
And in the "yes, I am way behind the times" division, BATMAN: EGO was brilliant. Someone put Darwyn Cooke in charge of DC, already.
I also picked up CASANOVA #2 and #3, but I haven't read 'em yet.

I was offered a job at a strip club. I told my wife that it was going to be for extra money. She said that I would walk out of there more in debt than I already am. It's the only part time job that I considered, other than occasionally working security at concerts and stuff. Anyway, she was right I would spend all my money there at the club. And she didn't like the idea of me being around slutty strippers all the time. So, in response I had to cut back on the number of comics, and the amount of alcohol that I drink in order to afford comics. Noooooooooo!!!!!!Although it's still much better than most comics on the stands, I've been pretty bored with Cap for the past several issues.

Yeah, it's off to a shakey start. It picked up so suddenly, I'd almost forgotten how the first issue ended. I don't mind the idea of Johnny chasing the Devil down on Earth, but the Devil's characterization sucks. Art's decent, though.

I agree. I liked the old solid Corps they used back in the first run of the series, when it took over Green Lantern for a while. I'm glad they brought back Kilowog, because his character is just too entertaining to kill for shock value, and Salakk's always a perfect foil for the more loose-cannonish Lanterns, like Guy. And the newbies have become surprisingly interesting, especially Natu. Vath and Isamot have a good dynamic, too, but I thought it was much better in Recharge. I'm hoping we'll see more of them rebuilding Thanagar and Rann together later on.

DC, and Marvel even, could take some notes from this series. Not everything has to be mind-numbingly depressing and serious all the time. Sometimes comics can be fun! This is one of my favorite Marvel books at the moment, and it's entirely because it's so hilarious and entertaining, it couldn't be serious if it tried. And I like that! A parody Dormammu showing up and demanding the Suicide Girls as payment for using the Mindless Ones? That's more entertaining than, say... Iron Man luring a bunch of other heroes into a trap 'cause they won't sign up. *needs a "jerking off" emote to properly express his feelings on this*

Yeah, it smacked of "buddy cop movie," minus the "I'm too old for this shit" and "I'm gonna' kill myself" schticks, but given the recent events in Rann-Thanagar War (one of the more interesting Infinite Crisis tie-ins), their pairing up was pretty interesting. At least, I found it interesting.

It just reminded me of the same "ethnically mismatched pair learns to work together" plot that's in every bad old war or cop movie. It's a stock plot, a substitute for actually writing something. They might as well have been named Kraut and Jewy, for all the subtlety.

I've truly enjoyed Vath and Isamot's interactions throughout Recharge and the first few issues of the ongoing, its really great, and with the revelation that came at the end of #3 it looks like even more interesting characterization and friendship could come out of it.

And I think the fact that they're both aliens helps make it more than the usual "The Defiant Ones" plot. Of course, that issue's been pretty much resolved since the ongoing's started up. The only conflict between them now is that Isamot wants to stay on Thanagar and help rebuild while Vath's following orders from the Guardians like the merc he is.
Plus, maybe I'm hanging around Scans Daily too much, but whoooo, talk about your homoerotic overtones... I expected one of them to say "You can ride my tail anytime!"
I think that would've been a lot more interesting than the route they're going now, with Isamot courting a mate completely out of the blue. Besides... some interspecies, alien ugly-bumping would make any book worth buying!

Bite Club: VCU is good.
Punisher "The Baracuda" storyline was nice. I just read all six issues this morning.
Stykman #1 was particularly funny. The self deprecating humor is an especially nice trait, in a world where everyone wants their book to be the best and toughest with as little if any humor directed to the main character.
I also liked Wolverine, Civil War #3 and amazing Spider-Man 534. It had an ending that moves towards Spidey being annonymous at the end of Civil War again.
Moonknight would be better if Spector would just put the costume on already. The whiney storyline should be reserved for a Todd issue of Spawn
And HardTime is now over, which saddens me. But it ended well. Although the ending had me wanting one more issue.
