Hey all,

After 7 years of using ebay, my account was hacked for the first time today. I still can't figure out how this happened. I use a random, non-guessable password, I never submit my account name and password via e-mail messages, I keep an up-to-date spyware and anti-virus on my computer, I use a private home computer, and I don't give my information out to anyone.

I got back control of the account and there doesn't seem to be any lasting damage, but I won't really be able to relax until I have some idea of how this happened and what I can do to prevent it in the future. Not surprisingly, ebay's support staff was particularly unhelpful in regard to this.

Any thoughts?

Yeah (guilty look). I just uninstalled it after this happened on the off-chance that was the cause. I'm assuming you think it was? I've scanned my computer and have no spyware, so how would that have done anything?

Same happened to me, I ended up getting Norton and closed a few ports just to make sure. Some ass got into my ebay account and posted a cell phone handset???? Anyway, I'd keep limewire off perm-style.

NP, so far it's worked like a charm, no problems since and it's been an easy 8 months.

Wasn't it amazing to see Ebay not give a rats ass? I was surprised.

Another good way to keep people from getting some of your info is getting a keyboard logger blocker. The one i use is called snoop free, and its working pretty well.

My sister uses Limewire, though it's an old version. An old freeware version. Should I uninstall?

Not sure, have you had problems? All I know is Limewire is not secure at all. I mean, the butthole that screwed me was even able to get into my email so....

I just can't figure out why someone would go through all that trouble to hack my account and then just list some stupid $10 auctions under my username. What the heck was the motivation?

Possibly my old yahoo! e-mail being deleted for no reason.

Getting ripped off sucks, but there is a certain irony when the victim is a limewire user.

Yes, this is what happened, your firefox, or Enternet Explorer got highjaked, and someone replaced your real log in link with a fake one, so you ende up givin away your pasword, and well all you have to do is change your pasword, and also make sure the old one wasn't the same as your email one....this happend to me before ..... good luck

Well, falsely claiming to have had your account hacked would be a very simple way to go back on bids or offers.

There were reports of a security hole in Limewire, but that was back in March 2005. Reportedly the company quickly released a fix, and in September there was another security upgrade.

So on paper at least you're safe if you're using a version that was released after the Fix.

IMO Limewire just isn't a very good P2P program, though. It's not open source, which would allow for discovering and fixing these security flaws more quickly. There are plenty of P2P programs far superior to Limewire.

Lol and Lime Wire is getting majorly sued, by a crap load of recording companies, so they will go out of bussiness pretty soon!

Just to let you know they were there. Also maybe to pratice what they do.

Peer-to-peer file-sharing software ala KaZaA, Napster, Morpheus etc.

And opening the program right now, it's apparently 99% porn.

Anyone with Limewire should uninstall it, if only because it's a crappy program.

Not to mention obsolete. Jesus, even I use BitTorrent... for all of my... completely... legal... file-sharing needs.

Just shows you that there are serious assholes on this planet who have nothing better to do than to hack someones account.

We're not all nerdy enough for BitTorrent. I figured out Limewire from the moment it opened. BitTorrent is alien to me.
