I'm always interested in hearing about some good webcomics, so why don't you folks recommend me some!

If I'm really into them, I might do a blog bit on them!

And, while I love self-promotion, I'd prefer folks recommend me comics that they, themselves, did not do.

Thanks!

I'll go with the obvious. Well, at least for anyone who reads YABS regularly:

Planet Karen. (http://planetkaren.girl-wonder.org/)

It's a daily four panel diary comic, often very witty, always smartly written. She can draw, too. It's more of a "makes you smile" comic than one that goes for cheap gags.

The Perry Bible Fellowship is the funniest webcomic I have ever seen. The man behind it is a genius. Here's a sample:

These are probably obvious ones but I love Questionable Content (http://www.questionablecontent.net) and 8-bit theatre (http://www.nuklearpower.com). Jeph Jacques, the guy who does Questionable Content is also involved in Indie Tits (http://www.indietits.com), both of which you kind of get more out of if you listen to a wide style of music. Reading 8-bit and Questionable Content from the beginning is highly recommended although not necessary. Again, I'm sorry if these are the ones everyone knows about. I also second Perry Bible Fellowship.

Various ones at Komikwerks.

www.komikwerks.com

There's 81 different series there. Some are adaptations of comics that were printed and are now being rereleased as online comics, others are straight up web comics, etc.

Among the series I think are decent there are:

ASTRO ACES, CAPTAIN TASK, CATMANDU, CREEPS, DAK ROTH SPACE MARSHAL, THE DISCIPLES, FEMME NOIR, GALACTIC CHIMP, GIANT FIGHTERS

There are plenty of others that might be better suited to your tastes. Sample the site is my advice.

Captain SNES: The Game Masta (http://www.captainsnes.com/) is my favorite, and unlike pretty much all sprite comics, it's actually got a well thought out in depth plot.

Devils Panties

I don't know why it just makes me smile from time to time kinda like Penny Aracde does.

The fact that Dominic Deegan (http://www.dominic-deegan.com) hasn't yet been mentioned is a crime against humanity.

I also must bring up The Polymer City Chronicles. (http://www.polymercitychronicles.com) It's got funny, it's got story, it's got amazing art, and as a bonus, the Babe Factor is practically through the roof. ;)

I just read like a month's worth of this after I read your post, and I don't think there were any jokes in the batch I saw. Could you post a funny one? I'm legitimately curious, as I saw these had been collected and sold fairly recently, and from what I've seen, I can't imagine paying money for it.

You can't go wrong with 8-bit theater (http://nuklearpower.com/archive.php).

I also recommend Order of the Stick (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots.html).

Both are very humerous but different parodies of fantasy rpgs.

Well, without tooting my own horn too loudly, I'd love it if any or all of you would come check out my webcomic "G.A.A.K: Groovy Ass Alien Kreatures" that I do with artist Monique MacNaughton. GAAK is sorta like Steven Spielberg's "The Goonies" mixed with equal parts of classic 50's style scifi movies like "The Invaders from Mars", "Earth vs the flaying saucers", "Invasion of the body snatchers", etc. It's the best damn monsters-run-amok, alien invasion adventure scifi webcomic that you've probably never heard of and should be reading if I do say so myself. And I do. LOL! :)

Smile (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/raina/smilecomics/series.php?view=archive&chapter=725) (A Dental Drama).

Ok, so it isn't exactly cutting edge, and you'd think a comic about an eleven-year-old girl getting a couple of teeth knocked out and the repairs that are necessary as a result would be tedious, but there's more than a bit of gentle charm to the whole thing.

My friend Patrick does (or did) a bunch of web-related shenanigans, including:

Pink Chickens - all-ages, hallucinatory, funny.
Raymondo Person - not all-ages, very funny.

And a bunch of little stuff.

This is the Raymondo comic I usually use to sell his stuff to people who aren't sure if they're going to like it.

VG Cats (http://www.vgcats.com/) They ahve a guest comic up now though so go back a few comics.

Cyanide & Happiness (http://www.explosm.net/) Near-daily offensive goodness. They got lazy around the 20th though so go back a few on this one too. :P

I'm always interested in hearing about some good webcomics, so why don't you folks recommend me some!

If I'm really into them, I might do a blog bit on them!

My relationship with webcomics is intermittent. What I mean is: Just as I often "wait for the trade" these days where printed comics are concerned, I also prefer to read complete storylines at one sitting where a webcomic is concerned, instead of logging on every single day to see the plot take another small step forward. So I may read everything a well-established webcomic has in its archives . . . and then forget about it for six months or a year, before something reminds me of it and causes me to go back for another look.

Some of the webcomics I've treated that way have already been mentioned in this thread. Beyond those, here are a few old favorites that spring to mind:

PVP (http://pvponline.com/) (the misadventures of the staff of a magazine about computer games)

The Flying Ferret (http://flyingferret.com/) (modern superheroics)

Bruno the Bandit (brunothebandit.com) (a rogue in what is more-or-less a "medieval fantasy" world -- actually it's been a heck of a long time since I caught up on that one!)

All of them quite humorous overall, but with ongoing storylines, drama, threats to life and limb, etc., instead of just going for a new punchline each day and leaving it at that.

And, while I love self-promotion, I'd prefer folks recommend me comics that they, themselves, did not do.

Thanks!

-Brian

No problem there! I've never actually helped create a webcomic, so I have no special ax to grind here!

Although a few months ago, I did spend a few hours typing out thousands of words of character descriptions and possible plot developments and initial dialogue for a (purely hypothetical at the moment) webcomic that would be something of an affectionate takeoff from the core concept of a D&D/Lord of the Rings-style "fantasy quest" scenario where a motley crew of adventurers are being gathered together to go off on a big mission to Fulfill an Important Prophecy, Gain Lots of Loot, and possibly even Save the World as a fringe benefit. (That's what the mysterious wizard who drafts them into service says is on the agenda, anyway . . . he wouldn't lie, would he?)

But I would need an artistic collaborator to actually draw the silly thing and turn it into a webcomic, and so far I haven't even tried to recruit anybody. I think I wanted to have at least 30 pages' worth of script drafted out so that I could show any potential partner that I had more to offer in a collaboration than just some rough ideas for what the characters ought to look like and act like. (I don't remember how many pages I actually scripted out -- five or six, maybe -- perhaps I ought to go back and write some more?)

I loved Queen of Wands (http://www.queenofwands.net/d/20050228.html) while it was running. It's finished now, so the author reran all the comics with commentary.

One of my favourites:
