View Full Version : The Hidden Meaning of your Name
Athena Bast

My given name is Tina.
Watching the a rerun of CSI Miami the other night I found out my name is also the nickname for Crystal Meth.
Addicts wanting to find other addicts to find dealers ask, "Are you a friend of Tina?"
Knowing this explains a lot of about the people who call me friend.
Anyone else find freaky stuff out about their names?

That didn't throw me as much as the information that, apparently, I'm supposed to fight Satan at the end of days.

By the way, my arms are getting tired... will someone carry these martyrs for a little while?

I know what you mean. I'm agnostic, and as such, I have no business being the "bearer of Christ."

Try carrying the most famous martyr of all. That's a lot of responsibility and a lot of pressure, and, as I said, I'm not even a Christian.
Incidentally, my middle name means "lion." Seems we've got a lot in common. ;)

My first name, Blair, is an old Scottish word for a plain (as in the geographical term) that would be particularly suited to be the site of a battle. A battlefield basically. It's the most accurate translation I can give, as there isn't really an equivelant in modern English.
Gilda Dent
08-17-2006, 03:42 PM
Depending on the source, Gilda means "golden", "servant of god", or "sacrifice". I think I like "sacrifice" best.

My first name means Earth or Man. I don't think I have to say what my name is since everyone can probably figure it out.

In Greek my name means "healer."
In Hebrew it's a term for "the Voice of God."
The only thing I have ever heard for mine was "Man of Britain"
I believe mine means "Gift of God" or somesuch.
However, since I don't believe in any sort of god ... I don't see how I can be a gift, therefore if I haven't been given to anyone then I don't exist.
Maybe I'm a Babblefish. Puffs of logic.
Hrm.

Well, my name's John.
Which is from "God is gracious" in Hebrew. Yochanan.
I learnt that off a keychain!
Well, G-d is gracious, I guess, Jews are Jews. Is the Y for YHWH?
As an atheist, I love having a name like that. I feel the same sort of irony Bertrand Russell did when he fell deathly ill in China:
"I was told that the Chinese said that they would bury me by the Western Lake and build a shrine to my memory. I have some slight regret that this did not happen, as I might have become a god, which would have been very chic for an atheist."
But, I agree with the sentiment. Even if there's no God life has been pretty gracious to me.
Oh, and I'm named after one of my grandfathers.
My last name is somehow derived from "Bricklayer" (in German), I think.

Apparently my name is an Indian word for 'sandalwood'. Nobody in my family is Indian, and it's one letter away from being a traditional Welsh name, which would be much more appropriate, so I'm not sure what my parents were smoking when they picked it.
Still, it does enable my best friend to call me 'Han', which I find cool. Because I'm a geek.

Ezra- (Hebrew)- "My Help/Court is God"
Dain- (Oh Good Lord, it's got to do with Geeks)- Name of a Dwarf from Norse Mythology. J.R.R. Tolkien used it to name two Dwarf Kings in Middle-Earth. Also, Dain is one of the four stags of Yggdrasill in Norse Mythology. Great, my weed smoking parents from the 70's named me after a name they briefly saw while they were reading Lord of the Rings stoned. That's just great. Oh well, at least I didn't come out named Frodo, Samwise, Bilbo (oh the Dildo taunts in school would've be mercilous. I thought being called Great Dain in school was rough as a kid.), or Smeagol.
Hunter- English- "One who Hunts" (Yeah, that one was hard to figure out.)

Bugger Brett Taylor? Your name's a complete sentence, like Dick Sprang!
Sabrinaset
08-17-2006, 10:49 PM
Hmm .... Sabrina: From the name of the Severn, a river in Wales, which was originally named Habren. In Celtic legend Sabrina was the name of a princess who was drowned in the Severn. Supposedly the river was named for her, but it is more likely that her name was actually derived from that of the river.
Well, that explains a lot.
My nickname, Sabrinaset... I got that in high school. There was some women in the 80's who ran a prostitution ring, but made it out to be a religion, and called herself the High Priestess of the Church of the Most High Goddess. The sacraments were performed by paying a priestess to have sex with you. Her name was Sabrina Aset... and somehow, that became me. This woman even had her own cable show on at some point.

Kent comes from the County of Kent, which comes from the Kingdom of Kent, which comes from the Cantiaci tribe of Celts in Southeast England.
Supposedly that's where the English side of the family's ancestors come from.

If Bill Willingham is right, according to an issue of Elementals, Scott also means Shadows. There was a character called "Porter Scott," and someone said to him, "Bearer of Shadows."
I once had a roommate who's full name means, "Noose," "Lake," "Dweller in a Stumpy Clearning."

Roger, actually.
And only one T in "Bret".
Actually, I was aware that "Roger" just meant shagging in general.
From Shakespeares Romeo & Juliet
"Shall I compare thee to a summer rose, or shall I just cut to the chase and roger you senseless?"
Annnnnyway.
As has been pointed out, Michael apparently in Hebrew means "who is like God?" or "likened unto God" which comes as a hell of a shock to Mrs Hod, I can tell you.
Hodder, on the other hand, is one who carries bricks.
Michael Hodder: God of bricklaying and dodgy quoteations.

Pól Rua
08-18-2006, 02:03 AM
If I hadn't been adopted, my birth parents would have named me 'Martin'...
which is apparently derived from Mars, God of War.
If I had been a girl, I would have been named 'Elizabeth'...
Which is derived from the Hebrew 'My God is an oath' (or 'an abundance')... hrm... actually, that latter's fairly accurate...
I was, actually, named Paul, which apparently means 'small' or 'humble' which is kind of true, because I was quite small when my parents first met me.
However, for the most part, I go by Pól, which is the Irish version of my name.
If you reverse the accent, it's the Scottish version.
And if you leave the accent off altogether, it means 'hole' apparently.
I try not to leave the accent off if I can help it.

My parents were clever enough to give me the middle initial D. and my last name is Light.... yes the groove is indeed in the heart.
Jose - he shall add
Raymundo - king of the world
Deogracias - by the grace of god
Oliveros - an olive farmer
Estrella - a star
y
Lustre - luster
So.... going by this I think my kid is going to go out and become some kind of televangelist/olive farmer who has a thing for shiny stars.
Or maybe my kid becomes king of the world who has a thing for olive farmers.
Etymology is so confusing.
